i'm probably the only one who finds this remotely interesting but seeing her actually work from 6:52 larking around pulling faces at the crew to finding where she is with the music and that very clear switch where she's 'on' at 7:07 is fascinating (to me, anyway). Love seeing this creative process I wish more of her films had preserved the outtakes!

I love vintage outtakes! Interesting to see how they filmed the number at different camera angles.

The thing I like about this (apart from the chance just to oggle at Frances) is that it shows the sheer hard work that went along with the natural talent she obviously possessed. She earnt her success a dozen times over, but unfortunately it did take its toll over time. Beautiful lady, in so many ways.

    God, those legs! ❤️
It bothers me that this gifted woman never believed in her own beauty. Most everyone agrees she was gorgeous.
It must have been physically and mentally exhausting to do all those takes. We see the finished product as one seamless performance.
MGM chewed up this woman and spit her out. How sad. What a pity and loss.

Some comments are suggesting these are retakes because there are technical or performance errors. Maybe once or twice but basically this is just the number of shots they needed to do to cut the sequence as the director and editor need it and have a couple of safety takes and different options left over. They’re shooting wide, mid and close up takes. She repeats part of the song only to be in the right position to go into the next part of it where they’ve altered the lighting. You can see that by the bow she takes, they’ve got different versions. Also there would be time between the takes for Judy to rest, refresh and have her make up checked. Making movies is laborious, more so back then when technology was more clunky and less reliable.

It might be one of my most favorite little clips of Judy Garland ever, but I love that moment at 13:45 where she puts a little "stank" on the song playfully. Something both Liza and Lorna have always claimed is how overlooked their mother's sense of humor is in pop culture, and I feel like we see it gleam through in that moment in a cheeky way that makes me smile.

You see it in her chat show spots too. She was uneducated and lived in a showbiz bubble, but she was hugely sharp and witty about her own world. Beyond it she was clueless.
It is a tragic paradox about the over-specialization stardom fosters that it is so hard to appraise one's own flaws and temptations when you spend so much of your life pretending to be other people, being intensively flattered and criticized: a recipe for confusing and frustrating all but the strongest characters. The triple-threat Judy idolized by millions was the Judy who wound up marrying grifters, keeping audiences waiting and bilking hoteliers.

It's interesting to see Judy acting so sexy, when she didn't see herself as beautiful at all, due to her early treatment by MGM. She had a poor self image, even though most people agree that she was cute to
    gorgeous.

Absolutely love this! I have it on DVD and after I heard it for the first time I had to play it over and over! What a shame it was cut from the film because it was deemed too risque and jazzy for a film set in 1912.

Luckily, this number was saved in a way, because it almost reappears in Summer Stock as "Get Happy". It seems that this made a lasting impression so that someone said, hey, Summer Stock needs something more. What if we find a way to use "Mr Monotony"? And so "Get Happy" is added post production.

    5:20 is a WHOLE MOOD.
Also realizing she was 25/26 while filming this. With all the stress from MGM she looks older. It’s really sad when you think about it.

This is fantastic! I love this number, and it’s a SHAME they took it out of the movie. As much as I love Easter Parade, it’s short on solos for Judy. Fabulous Fred Astaire has WAY MORE time performing solo, and his talent is truly amazing, but to cut a number like this with Judy is just a travesty!

An Irvin Berlin throway song. I understand why this was cut, not because of the performance but because of the quality of the song!

    • @Jasper7182009
      @Jasper7182009 9 месяцев назад +1

No, it was probably cut because Fred Astaire didn’t want it in. And as others have commented, Astaire had more song and dance time than Judy Garland did. It’s a shame. Obviously, Astaire was not a gracious and generous artist.

It's interesting to see how these musical numbers were filmed without sound. The actor would lip-synch along with the tape in the studio, and then once they got the shot right, the song and the sound effects would be added to the soundtrack later.

Anything to avoid Judy from exuding any sexuality that would diminish the girl-next-door image MGM had developed around her. The year before during the making of the film 'The Pirate', a number called "Voodoo" was removed for being too provocative.

I don't remember this song from the movie yet I have seen this movie many times in my youth - was this in the movie? - I just checked and no it wasn't, it must have been part of the vaudeville sketch. My fave songs were 'I'm just a fella', 'when the midnight choo choo leaves for Alabam ' We're a couple of swells', 'stepping out with my baby' and 'drum crazy' of course. Ann miller did a great job also in this film. But yeah - Judy garland - always will be my childhood hero.

The crew is at fault for this. Judy repeated each re-take performance basically as a mirror to her pre-recorded voice. The proof is on camera.

Was anyone else scared as hell at the face she made at 5:19?! Im guessing they must've yelled "cut" for the umpteenth time and she wasn't happy about it... pretty sure someone felt her wrath after that part...my gracious she creeped me out!

morgan Layton No, I wasn’t scared or creeped out by Judy’s expression. It seems to me that she was a little put off by the director calling out (I assume) “cut” yet again. It must be difficult for performers to stop in mid-stream as it were, and to do take after take and still keep up the same flow of fresh energy.

These actors are great but do you know who is greater? Jesus. He is selfless and loving. He died for everyone's sins, past, present, and future. Be careful when watching these films. We mustn't make these people our idols. Exodus 20:3-5 says "You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens on earth or in the sea. You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods." Not only that, but the end times are here. 2 Timothy 4:1-5 states "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!" This is merely to inform people, not to attack them. God bless.
