My son likes the Touchscreen and the light body( he is 13). It's his third Canon after the 450d und 550d and he likes it a lot more than the others. 3 years ago this was the video that convinced me to get myself the 1000D. I have a 50D now. The only think I ever found lacking in the 1000D all this time was spot metering and no ISO beyond 1600. For everything else, this is the perfect beginners SLR.

I know this is a very old post and an old camera but i have just stumbled across it as I have recently purchased a canon 1000D secondhand. So if anyone is still wondering how to get the live view to work the camera has to be in one of the P, Tv, Av, M, or A-DEP mode (mine does anyway) and then press menu , 5th menu along select item 1 up from bottom (live view function setting), select enable then quit menu, press set button to activate live view Thanks Davinor! photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1161041

well, to be honest I think it's just bad luck. but .. bad luck twice. And i really hope there won't be any third time eventually .. There's perhaps like 0.1% chance you get this problem, i don't know (google Err99 and you'll get tonnes of links but though). The camera in itself is great value for the money. I really like it, and the pics are by far the best you could get with any entry DSLR. Plus, the 18-55IS is excellent compared to the old 18-55. I just hope you'll be more lucky than I am.
Lower resolution gives better ISO sensitivity. So you get more clarity and less noise while shooting at high ISO settings. Higher resolution is good for low ISO picture detail which is useful if you're deciding to print posters of your pictures but thats all its useful for. Resolution has little significance when it comes to SLR. The big high resolution pictures just use up more space.
@duffz The only thing that helped me was looking trough the viewfinder instead of using live view . When i used Live View the camera diden`t want to focus . But in the viewfinder it does focus .

@1hussainjoker1 I'm not trying to oppose you, but could you give some details as in WHY nikon is better.. personally I'm looking to buy the nikon d3000 as beginner d-slr. for those who wonder why: 11 point 3d focus faster raw shooting. Canon 1000d pro's; sharper image, less noise but in the end a lot of us will photoshop that noise away so I'll choose for a better AF system to begin with.
@MyoujouAdauchi after watching a lot of the nikon d3000 and the canon eos 1000d, its pretty much the same but when it comes to image quality its the canon which wins, but beginner friendly, its the nikon, the canon has "only" got 7-point AF besides the nikon which has 11-points AF, but canon is taking better use of only 7-point AF, i just bought a canon eos 1000d and its just great its more beginner friendly than i thought, and great image quality.I would buy the canon it has also more features

Ill buy the cam who have more mpx, im not silly!! is pathetic but is true
The Autofocus refuses to work on mine , the square never goes green , and the picture gets very blurry unless you press the * button on the righ top corner . Is the Autofocus on the lens or in the camera ? I hope it `s on the lens , since then i just need to replace the lens . Or i have to send it in for repair since it refuses to focus when press the shutter button down halfway like all other cameras i have had .
European viewers beware. To keep the price down, Canon have replaced the good IS (Image Stabiling) lens with a cheap non-stabilised lens in the European kits. To get the IS lens in Europe, you need to buy the 450D.

Well, i swapped my first camera for a new one, which I did for free (under warranty), i'm gonna bring back my 2nd new camera to the store I bought it from, and I hope they'll swap this one too .. I'm thinking of upgrading to a 450D which seems to have less problem like those. The 40D is famous too for the Err99 problem ..
I got exactly the same problem, with Err99 poping up everytime I try to shoot a picture. I send my camera back to the manufacturer and got a new one, and once again after 3 weeks this new one got the Err99 problem too. I chosed Canon for the image quality, the 1000D is awesome for the price, you have a huge range of lenses available, the pictures are very sharp even with the 18-55IS kit lens, but once you got the very commun Err99 problem you start having regrets ..

@Dylandier It can take video if it's connected to a computer and you have a certain piece of software installed on that computer. You will have to run a microphone on the side though. Not exactly a practical solution, but it can be done. Shoots in HD.
This video actually put me off buying an slr because they seem so complicated to use! I honestly dont think i could do all that without any help. Even though i know basics like shutter speed, apeture, depth of field etc :/

MY live view rarely works eihter , sadly i diden`t got any is lens whit it and now i can`t find a good affordable lens . Actually regret my purchase .

@tarrizzzzzzzzz no it doesn't shoot video it only has live view. why not buy a videocam for video.. a slr is made to make pictures in my opinion.
u must activate liveview in menu and it only works with Tv, Av, M, P and not those predefines once. press set when in Tv mode to activate liveview

Yesterday I saw one in "Media Markt", that had a stabelised lens!
It's wrong that there are only non stabelised 1000d's in Europe!
The focus is so slow compare to the normal off live mode
