Old alienware have swapable gpu and ram, so they were more futureproof.
This one has soldered everything, and also, it's heavy, so only cons remain... plus that cpu there should be i9 or 12+ cores ryzen.
Also, design looks like dell no longer alienware. This is an expensive dell laptop.
If you want something better looking, go buy anything else with the exception of MSI. MSI and Dell are only brands that make laptops that look like toys even when those machines cost 2000+.
Other's branded gaming laptops look more like business machines, and I personally like that direction, and sales metrics show that I'm not alone...

Then when they swapped out the heat sink the speakers started acting up and then I had to go through all the “troubleshooting” steps I listed above again. Then the keyboard lighting went out. Then I ran out of the one year warranty on it sooooo I’m stuck with ticking time bomb of failures because the entire laptop is refurbished components.

I was surprised Alienware did not work with AMD for a new flagship model later this year, presumably because its core latency issue with dedicated graphics. Maybe we can see Alienware “be better” again in next year CES with intel’s HX series cpu and NVIDIA’s 5000 series? I hope it is worth the waiting. As an owner of original X17 r1
I spent like $3,000+ on it (i7-11800H, RTX3080, 4K UHD 100% Adobe RGB). I pretty much agree with you. On the good side, the laptop is really thin. The build quality is great, it feels very premium, and it's really really beautiful.
However, it's not really small or light
The footprint is larger than regular 17.3" because of the rear exhaust. If you think that power brick is large, the original x17 brick doubles that size. It's stupidly large. Dell cheap out and gives you a typical 330W adapter. The one in the Video is an improved version.
    After 2.5 years or so,

Honestly I love the design and size of the x16 r2. Alienware makes their laptops to take full advantage of the gpu's and cpus by designing a cooling system to be able to pump high watts. That's always been their advantage. And compared to previous gens, they actually made it really portable for it, but at the end of the day, they're considered mobile workstations. It's the reason why asus G series laptops had more wattage in their last generations than in their current generations. In order to slim down the laptop, they had to lower the wattage output because their cooling system can't really handle the higher wattages alienware provides due to their slim design. I do understand that sometimes we all wish that a 4090 could fit into a 14 inch and pump full 330w, but physical restraints still exists. It's one of the reasons why I love my m16 R2, for its size, it's able to really provide decent wattage to my 4070. Those new ryzen chips are really promising though!

    *reads title*
Dell. Dell happened, and is still happening.
When Dell bought them the quality immediately went downhill because Dell started shoving DELL parts into Alienware rigs and the quality was just... bad. Even now it isn't what it could be.
As Steve has shown with their secret shopper series the Alienware cases and hardware have design choices that make... no sense, and some choices while literally in the way of the current design - are still there, in the way. Literally throwing money into the wind for things that are not needed other than to be different, or to prevent direct swapping of components.
Frankly I would only buy from Falcon Northwest at this point if I wanted a full custom laptop... It's hard to believe they are often cheaper, now, and have better hardware than other options.

I'm on my 2nd Alieware laptop - I agree with all your negative points. On top (pun intended) the mostherboard is reversed which make repasting a very time consuming job. The provision for only a mini mem card is tone deaf for what most users need. The paint on the keyboard for both my laptops rubbed off within 12 months of purchase. Their Alienware command center is a terrible joke tht works less than 50% of the time. My current Alienware X17 R2 runs at almost constant 100 degrees C on even the most mild tasks. It does give me good performance in some gaming tasks but, for the money, it is not a good choice. This is most likely my last Alienware laptop.

Watched until the end before commenting. The R16 R2 would be forgiven if it was Alienware’s “biggest, bulkiest, highest performing, all the IO and upgrade slots” laptop for its size and keyboard, but it’s not, it’s meant to be the “compact and slim” type of gaming laptop that trades specs and upgradeability for portability/looks. In that category, having the best power limits doesn’t matter as much as having a convenient form factor, and this isn’t it. Also, it’s hard to go with the “outrageous out-of-the-world” looks that Alienware’s branding hinges off of when the industry is trending towards gaming laptops that look like a Razer Blade or a thinkpad.

I wish Alienware would get serious and compete on quality. Its a well-known brand with interesting designs, only, they often fall short with the quality. Its the truth. I reckon, they have made some progress last two or three years, but its far too little.

I wish that gaming laptops still have the option to use desktop processors like it was back in 2019 with the alienware area 51m and the msi gt 76 titan since both gaming laptops use the intel core i-9900k desktop that way there is no sacrifice in terms of performance for the processors even though battery life will take a major hit compared to there mobile processors. The modern mobile processors still get hot like the desktop processors plus using the laptop plugged in has better gaming performance compared to relying on battery power to play the games. The mobile processors on the gaming laptops tdp are very low compared to there desktop counterparts since raw performance is being sacrificed for better battery life. Back in 2021, from the linus tech tips video, the origin pc eon17x gaming laptop had the intel core i9-11900k desktop cpu in the gaming laptop, 4k 60 hz display, 3080 gpu, removable 97 watt battery, 4 nvme ssd slots, 2 power supplies that are 280 watts each and its the size of an msi titan gaming laptop.

Its Dell, its American, its trash...end of story. I recently bought a x14r2 like a week ago and returned it the very next day. I had the strangest issue with Alienware command center where if I launched the Dell support assistant the laptop would no longer be able to understand what that the Alienware command center was even an app, and I would get an error message saying to try again later. Additionally, out of the box the volume up key didn't work and for a minute until I factory reset the laptop the fan profile button just didn't do anything. I have no idea how products like this even leave the test floor. Like how you put that price tag on a device and then just leave it with all the issues that it has. I am starting to believe that companies now a days are satisfied with releasing hot garbage and we as consumers just keep buying their trash. Honestly the consumer needs to take back the power from these money hungry companies because this is flat out unacceptable. Oh, and to reiterate that Alienware is hot garbage, I also bought their Alienware pro mouse, and again with this Alienware command center I went to update the firmware and all that happened was an error message saying it could not be updated. All in all, I ended up going back to the Asus ROG line of laptops because in all my testing of gaming laptops ASUS has almost never disappointed me. So yeah...DELL=American=trash

Reviewing this laptop's form factor as if it's trying to be a thin and light is silly. Laptop's like this are designed to sit on a desk most of the time, but you can move it around or take it on vacation better than a true desktop PC.
Sure, this limits is appeal, but it should be reviewed as what it is. This is like reviewing a chrome book and saying it's terrible because it can't run cyberpunk at 4k 360htz.
Don't mistake me as saying this laptop is a good one, I'm just saying it needs reviewed in the right context.

it's so annoying when these reviewers talk about a gaming laptops design being purposefully designed as a gaming laptop (big heatsinks, "concept" looking, big power brick, etc) as a bad thing because it's not some boring business looking laptop, this guy needs to stick to his legion laptops if he likes them so much, Alienware is and has always been about top end gaming laptops, better than the competition by a mile in terms of cooling, as long as you know how to repaste your own laptop. As for software issues yeah, i can't defend alienware there, their software is ass, but you have alternatives and basically anyone with a bit of knowledge knows that you should reinstall a clean copy of windows yourself on ANY laptop, because bloatware is always terrible no matter which brand you go with.

  • @RorschDG-2

I have an Alienware M17 R5 AMD Advantage. It's one of the few laptops with AMD GPU and CPU Combo and the battery life is unmatched for it's size. Sure it's heavy but it lasts on battery which is important. I've had 2 laptops, an M11x R3 and this one and haven't had that many issues with either. And I got it on sale too which helps massively lol. Got it for less than Lenovo's Legion 7 Gen 7 which has the same specs
The price is Alienware's "Tax" for the brand, but their biggest issue is Dell's horrid, and I mean this from someone looking in, horrid QC. I had an XPS as well and it was good, but I had a friend who had a newer XPS that had the loose trackpad. Only to RMA it and get an even worse trackpad. It's disgusting how bad Dell's QC in general is this bad. It hurts their XPS and Alienware brands respectively. You can forgive the cheaper machines, 'cheaper' machines like the Inspiron or whatever but not on something that costs over $2K
