The Fuji Instax Wide 300 just got a massive mod upgrade. Nate Weis from @option8 attached a Schneider Symmar 100mm f/5.6 lens to the front of the instant film body. This is a massive mod because now we have full manual control and essentially compresses a Large format camera with an Instax back into a portable compact body.
The Schneider lens delivers legendary quality to the instant film medium. For all film photography enthusiasts, shooting with this camera is a joy.

I've bought a few modded cameras from Instant Options/Option8 and love them! Its crazy that there was never a fully manual camera released by Fuji, but I've shot tens of thousands of frames with his modded ones! Amazing fot studio, outdoor, or just getting creative with shots!

I really wish Fuji would make a Instax camera with a fast lens so you could get that medium format feel.
maybe they will!
Check out the MiNT Instax RF cameras...or if you are feeling saucy, I love my "Frankenstax" Instax Square back for my RB67 that was custom built
I wish Fuji made a quality camera for its Wide format. Hell, a camera in general would be great, there's like three in total
OH HELL YEAH. I already love the "wide format" Instax, but this is awesome.
dude the Instax Wide is awesome as it is. It's the best format
Great video, Chris! I feel like this mod completely changes the game for instant film. Wondering if we will see an actual product like this in the future.
Get an Instax square for the RB67. Even better, in my opinion
@@patrickjclarke I totally forgot that was an option. Good idea!
I'm really happy to see a fellow photography nerd enjoy his craft
Is this Caleb guy one of those artsy Californian homeless dudes? I get that vibe from him. Is he homeless because he spent all his money on his film photography art career? I hope you two make more videos together. Love this video. The coast looks so beautiful in those photos.
I love seeing these mods!
That kind of modding is a very good starting camera for shooting instant film with a good quality lens and manual shutter, but there are much better options.
The biggest problem I see with this setup is that you don’t have a way to properly focus (rangefinder, focusing screen, etc.) and frame (the frame lines aren’t really precise for the new focal length and it has parallax error on close distances). It’s a very barebones experience specially when you take into account you can’t reframe the photo in post as with conventional film.
That’s why I prefer to shoot with instant backs for camera systems like the RB67, or even better with a dedicated large format SLR. Another really good option that’s a very nice middle ground between being compact and very capable is a converted Polaroid 110B for shooting Instax film.
I’ve made several backs and mods in the past and my current favorite setup is a custom large format SLR with backs for both Instax (Wide/Square/Mini) and Polaroid integral (SX-70/600/I-Type) with interchangeable lenses and focal plane shutter. It’s quite a beast, though, so when I want to travel light I use a custom made TLR for Polaroid Go format.
There are lots of options out there. :)
I’d love to see tlr modified for Polaroid go as I’d love to make something similar
I use a laser rangefinder with mine :)
Missed shooting film! ❤️ Another cool video Chris!
instant film is the way to go!
This is great, exactly what I was looking for. Is there a video about the modification ? 😊
These look so good
Ill be buying one of these soon. I bought a pack film camera from Nate years ago. Then Fuji f'd me by 86'ing pack film. Nate's camera was amazing.
hello, where did you by the nate camera ? i really want to buy one too
MADNESS!

Wildly good
I have a Mamiya Instax Wide 300 from Analogue Studio DC, using the Mamiya Universal Press 100mm f3.5 lens, and it's definitely a fun instant experience!

Hey my man - look into getting a laser tape measurer from a local hardware store. Would help you hammer those focal planes. Sick video, as usual.

It's like a portable Lomograflok. That's sick.

After shooting like 400 pink Polaroids over the last year, I think that's just what they look like. Maybe 5% have realistic color, such a shame. It's def not the Polaroid our parents used. That being said your Instax shots looked incredible!
rip. that is a terrible conclusion.
It’s heat. If it’s hot you should develop in a cool box. If it’s too cold they go green. That’s why if you want consistent you shoot Instax. Polaroid when it hits tho is soooo good though
i think it depends on where you buy your film from and how it was stored
@@patrickjclarke instax goes blue in the cold and overly contrasty in the heat.
Done similar things to broken Instax 100 and 300, works like a charm if you get proper flange distance and a lens that covers the entire instax wide frame. I do that only with the ones that are broken beyond reasonable repair, while also giving them ejection switches other than simple button, since it can easily be pushed in a bag.
Also, with Instax 100 I've done that in 2016. Should've monetised it.

I use my hassled 500 and Mamiya C330 to do the same thing, best meter setting outdoor will be metered at iso 640 for this instax film to avoid the over expoure
As much as I love my SX-70s and never part with them, I really miss spectra film, and tbh Fuji’s limited camera offerings were always holding me back - if something like this becomes more accessible, I wouldn’t mind giving it a shot
SX-70’s are great show-and-tell items. I don’t think they’re worth the inconsistencies that Polaroids are known for. I think Fuji is making good progress in making it more accessible
Such a fun video
Thank you, Gene man!
bro your shots a absolutely insane with that set up. so fuckin sick.
Sooooo… could we get a tutorial on how to mod it?? Pretty plz 👀

Got me with the Honne!

Option8 is a true ledgend
put that man on Mount Rushmore
I have a Cameradactyl Rex, and the only disappointment with that camera is that you can't get close focus with any of the Mamiya press lenses. All of them only go down to 1 meter, so even with the 100mm, you can't really do headshots.

It's a cool mod for the instax wide but if you really want world best glass you should go with the 4x5 lomograflok back, not sure whick lens is that on the instax wide but probalby its not even close to the best 4x5 or medium format glass.
Instax Wide does not have the ability to show the resolution a 4x5 lens can produce.

damn literally taking photos in my backyard
Bonjour je n’arrive pas à trouvé l’objectif en plus sur internet, quelqu’un pourrait me dire où je peux le trouver ? 😊
I just wish Fuji gave a bit more consideration to its best instant format. I know Mini is way more profitable but their refusal to build a quality camera for Wide is infuriating. I know about the RF70, I just don't want to shell out 700+$ for an instant camera. A middle ground between that and a toy would be nice.
A quality Wide camera from Fuji with a great lens would run you a good $500. Might as well just get the RF70.
@@michaelbell75 I don't think it would though, glass is expensive but it's not THAT expensive. This camera wouldn't be taking away sales from anything else, it's not like having a really good instant camera means people wouldn't buy digital fujifilm cameras anymore.
I think they could make a quality instax wide camera for 250 dollars with a glass lens with autofocus and it would have a greater margin than the current one. Or they could do it for less with a lower margin and just have it as a gift to those of us who patron them a lot and buy lots of instant film.
Bro where’d you get your muussisicciiciccicci!!!!???? *Music
Pleeeeeease, make a video teaching how to do it :) I bag you

I saw these puppies on offer up and so disappointed I passed up on the opportunity 😅
Instax's ISO is quite finicky to shoot manually, different ISO settings in daylight/ indoor/ cloudy. I have a hasselblad instax back and it is painful to use to be honest.
it does have its inconsistencies, but that's the "charm"
Um, it’s ISO 800. It does have very narrow latitude, so you have to mail your exposure. I have had no problems with my FrankenStax for my RB67
Instax is technically ISO 800, but the way it performs will vary drastically in high or low light. Outdoors on a bright day it acts more like an ISO 1200 equivalent, in doors or in a dark environment with limited lighting, it's closer to about 400-640.
This is using multiple modded cameras and always getting the similar results. Usually I need to bump it up or down about 1/3 - 2/3 of a stop. Indoors with ideal lighting (studio) or on a cloudy day, it does perform around 800.
@@MikeRollerson Schwarzchild effect is the name of that phenomenon. And indeed, while marked as ISO 800, the effective light sensitivity of that film varies, depending on the ammount of light you hit it with. It is proper 800 in the daylight, as it was designed with this type of light in mind.
