I'm 58 and have been in and out of the photography industry for over 30 years. This is what I would have told myself way back when. I love making images. I've never thought of photography as a competition, the idea is even strange for me. I have always shared my knowledge and tried to learn from others, no matter the experience level. Everyone has something to offer, a different technique or even a unique perspective. The sad thing is that some people don't share because they don't believe they are good enough. This deprives us of the amazing art that they may be creating. Share your stuff, even if you don't think it is good enough. The world deserves to see it! Thank you for this Dave!
I just want to say thanks for making photography videos. A lot of other channels focus on gear. I feel like your channel really explores are topics. Not to gear centric.
Man, the first few minutes of this sum up how I’ve been feeling about social media and photography so well! I found myself only taking pictures when I was in cool places and only during sunrises and sunsets… that meant I only picked up my camera a few times a year and frankly was kind of a miserable person to be around when traveling. I got more into just wanting to capture life as it happened and stopped worrying if it was a banger.
That's the key. I too had to learn to stop chasing bangers and just enjoy being a photographer even if no one else sees it or cares. It's the only sustainable way forward.
Loved the first point. I recently took some advice and changed what I’m shooting. I moved from Hawaii to the Midwest (for wife’s work) and I’ve been stuck for two years. Complaining and stuck with how boring it is here. Now I’m documenting the area I’m in as opposed to feeling stuck here and missing shooting beaches and mountains. It’s reignited me.
As they say, nothing worth doing comes easy and becoming accomplished at any skill takes time and hard work … usually for life. I could speak to all three points but your presentation today, Dave, says it all so well. Kudos for such an inspirational episode. It’s evident that your own hard work and self-development have made you a better photographer and a better instructor in so many ways. Thanks! Best of the year, imho.
Great video and so inspired as always. I'm going to SF and Yosemite in the first week of October this year. Any chance you're going to Yosemite during that period? 😆 I first thought I was gonna just hang around in SF, but after watching a lot of your videos telling me how much you are so into Yosemite, I decided to make a one-day tour to Yosemite. Probably one day might not be enough, but that's what I got and I have to deal with it. I'm gonna start praying for some good light on that day 😂 Wish me luck.
Photography is unique amongst all genre of arts in that it is combination of talent on the part of the photographer, science, knowledge and craft of photography. When all is found in good measures in a photographer, then he or she becomes a good photographer. I doubt very much if we will see any true great photgraphers anymore, as that accolade was reserved for the few who were pioneers and inventors in their field of photography, Weston, Adams, Avedon, Bailey, Hass, etc etc. As formyself, when I see a photograph that I have made and it makes me feel good, then I know that I am a competent photographer in my own field of photography. I couldn't pose a model for all the tea in China, but I do conjure up some decent photographs out of the ordinary and mundane that surrounds us.
creating a good picture, and creating a picture that wins contests- have different motives and ultimately i think the photographer's intentions will often show up in the result. over-sharpened, over-clarity, intense saturated gradients, but the content is not a moment or experience. it's just a model posing or an object- a showcase of photoshop skills. and btw, an endeavor that ai generation is in the process of replacing.

I’m a good photographer who WANTS to take photos at Yosemite?
Well it sounds like you need to come back soon. Fall / winter is best in Yosemite!
Good photographer or good artist?
If you’re good, you can be dumped anywhere with any camera and still get interesting work. JMO.
