Very well put review! Personally while I am a bit cold on this album at the moment, I can't discount the possibility that it will grow on me, as it took some time for me to warm up to their other work. They have some songs I completely wrote off on first listen, but they came back around to be some of my favourites. I hope Like All Before You ages well like that too.
I too am definitely holding out hope, though as always I gave it a thorough 5 - 10 full listens, still, the first two certainly weren’t instant so who knows. Cheers for watching and writing 🤘
i like it. it sounds like teenagers recorded it in their parent's basement after school over the course of a semester. it's the type of album you put on in the background during art class. people were expecting virtue part 2 and they were disappoint so it'll take some time for them to get used to the mixing and judge it on its own merit. the other problem is that fans had already heard almost half the album. if they removed prophecy or flex and released it as an ep the expectations would have been lower and it would have been received better.
This is actually a great take- hadn’t thought of it like that, certainly makes me feel a bit differently when I look at it like that. Still struggle on replays, but hopefully it will grow on me. Nice one
Great review man! Really well said with fantastic points. I would give it a 7/10 on the Voidz scale (easily their worst record) but still a 9 on the grand scale of music. I am most definitely a Casablancas fanboy though, so take my review with a grain of salt. The overuse of cheap autotune and metal guitars, as well as the record's very strange lo-fi(ish) production style does much more harm than good for the tracks, but the man is such a melodic mastermind that I still can't help but listen to the songs again and again.
Thanks! Appreciate that! You’re spot on about Casablancas knack for melody- he’s one of a kind for sure - just a shame this time around he’s possibly a little too infatuated with the autotune 😂 . Cheers for watching 🤘
Honestly, the album grew on me....mostly. I think you're spot on when you say they've taken the weirdness to a point that its almost self satirical, but it seems like that vibe is intentional. "I was a lounge lizard, now look at me, I'm a wizard." That's one line I can't help but to joyfully cringe at. I'd say this album has some telling lyrics that get drowned out until memorized but are actually meaningful, and add to the tracks. 7 horses got better once I learned the lyrics. The lyrics are actually creeepy, like a remorseful confession. Oh and I saw them live in NY and they played these tracks great and the audio clarity was much better. Weird mixing on the record I guess.

I kinda liked this album the awful mixing makes it sound weirdly experimental imo
It certainly adds….something 🫣 haha but yes you can’t knock it for sounding like anyone else for sure. Cheers for watching 🤘
