Oi oi alright alright! I'm Grant, you're YOU and this is The DoodleReview...
This is a channel where we review new albums, and talk music pretty much non-stop. No genre is off-limits, but my home-base is rock or guitar based music, so you'll find a lot of that here. Monday - Friday is all about album reviews, at the weekends we have a Saturday Special series which covers album rankings, artist deep dives, and other things, we also have our Sunday Jazz Club - a weekly spot to take a look at a jazz album new or old. Thanks for stopping by and I look forward to chatting music with you 🤘

I used to prank call fred from limp bizkit thanks to buddyheads gossip page. I heard of the mars volta tremulant ep from buddyhead i was already a at the drive in fan " pink floyd meets gerado"
Tied with the Lazeretto album for me, great reaction! Cheers from the states🇺🇸🤘
Nice! Glad you like it man - the review and the album! 🤘
Respect your opinion of course, but your least favorite albums are my favorites by the brothers
Haha fair enough that’s how it goes sometimes! Glad someone’s enjoying them 🤘 thanks for watching
Still waiting for the book. And I’m sure Black Lives could fill a book. Something about that record. Makes me wanna go off more than the rest.
Ah man you’re right a book would be killer, either from Joe or an oral history from the many members and associates. Would be a wild read. Agree Black Lives is the dark horse in the discography!
Love this album
It’s a classic 🙌
I’d hate to be in Fred’s spot fuck bill lol
🤘
Gonna go find this NOW. Cheers
Right. So, I listened to this album 3 times through today, and yeah. Absolute BANGER for me. If you're looking for an album rip, r/jackwhite is the place, check rule 3.
Awesome! How’d you place it in his catalogue out of interest??
great art dude!!!
Thanks 🤘
The lack of Petrodragonic is a crime
It made my Top 50 of the year overall! Tried to keep the two lists as separate as possible. Thanks for watching 👌
Looking forward to checking this out once it hits streaming
Just check it out on RUclips, the entire album is on there :)
It’s got a wide release now, what do you reckon to it??
@@doodlereviewo man i freaking love it. I would have liked one or two slower or acoustic songs as well, but yea... killer record
@@doodlereview Gave it a listen today & think it’s decent… I’d be interested to hear how the recording was done. The lo-fi ness of it seems a little self conscious in a way that the White Stripes never seemed to be. I think that up to this point in his discography there had been a pretty steady progression album by album since the WS days in both the use of technology & song writing. It may not have always been for me, mostly in regard to his solo output, but I appreciated the anything goes spirit of it. This is pretty clearly an attempt to look back & revisit that early WS sound (pre Elephant) which kinda works & kinda doesn’t at the same time. I have complicated feelings on this, feels like he’s reduced himself by trying to fit into that little room again. That being said I do think there are a few songs here that are among his best in recent memory. So idk feeling like a 6.5 right now. Maybe further listening will bump it up for me.
Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds Chasing Yesterday As You Were Council Skies Why Me? Why Not? Who Built The Moon Cmon You Know
Not too far off mine! Lots o’ people hating on Cmon Y’know! Maybe I was just in a good mood when I heard it 😂
@@doodlereview haha. It's alright but very poor and basic songwriting in my opinion
Mafia what else
👊
Another banger interview, great to learn more about the SM universe
Cheers man! Proud of this one for sure
My exact list
Good taste 🤝
Bossanova’s prolly my joint favourite album of theirs with Doolittle
No way?? Fair enough, I can see that - they’ve never put out a bad one for sure. This one just seems the most haphazard to me
This is how the tierlist need to look: Innerspeaker-- S Lonerism-- S Currents-- S The Slow Rush-- S
Hahah yep fair play man 🤘 it’s all good music
Gene and I played together for a few years in The Miracle Workers, great to hear all his stories! 😊
Oh wow that’s awesome man - I loved the “Overdose” record from you guys 🤘 Will be fun to dive more into the MW catalog at some point, maybe a special episode in the future
@@doodlereview Sadly, I have to correct Gene, he said we were all junkies when he left the band but I never touched junk and didn't have problems until a few years later with the band. I'd be able to offer tall tales about the last 30 years of working in Switzerland that includes tons of QOTSA stories getting them their first gigs here. Let me know how to get a hold of you.
This would be awesome! Let’s definitely hook it up at some point - my email is DoodleReview.club@gmail.com
Great interview, so cool to hear Gene's side of the story. Would love to hear more from the Queens guys
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah there are so many people in the family tree, would be great to hear more from them. I bet “The Droid” has some stories…
Can't remember such a near universal acclaim for a pop album in many years
It’s become a real phenomenon! Fair play to Charli, she’s put the time in!
Great interview. Came across super honest and got some interesting insights from maybe my favorite era
Nice one! Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it - agreed, this is one of my favourite eras of the band, something special about that turn of the millennium time!
gotta be one of the best albums they've made in a while
Agreed, last one I got into was Working with God, but I think this is way better
Melvins fuckin rule!!!
🤘🤘
love charli, love this album, love this review it is so spot on, buttttt... '30+ millenials like me' ????? bro u could have fooled me for 25
Haha cheers - I get that a lot, baby-face af
Quick explanation and beautiful speedpaint. Will definitely check the full review
Thanks 🙏 hope you enjoy!
Thankfully my At Action Park came with a piece of paper describing how to revitalize someone after suffering a deadly electric shock. It actually came handy once
I’ve heard about this 😂 did you actually use it???
@@doodlereview Lightly. I own a 200 W Sunn Concert Bass that has zero grounding, and as soon as my singer/bassist (was using it) lips touched the mic, bro got McFlyd’ across the room. He was out for almost 30 seconds
Fuuuuuuccck that coulda been lethal! Have seen a similar thing happen with our bands singer at shows though - it happens. That bass sounds amazing 🤤
its all S tier bro
Fairs, they make great music whatever way you look at it!
Don’t love everything Melvins do but I will always check out whatever they’ve putting out. This one’s 70/30 for me, leaning positive.
Totally agree man, to me it’s like King Gizz, Oh Sees and Ty Segall - normally 1 in 3 new albums is great
@@doodlereview I think my hit ratio has been higher lately for Osees (liked to loved everything they’ve done since Mutilator) KGLW is a little iffier tho still solid & I’ve gradually fallen off the Ty train since Emotional Mugger. Still give all their new stuff a spin tho!
You recreated perfectly. I wonder if you went to art school
Wow that’s a huge compliment! I didn’t actually. Honestly the iPad is helpful for matching colours and marking out objects relative to where they are on the original - I then just try my best over that and sometimes it turns out good. I appreciate the kind words 🙏
Killer line work man 🦎 Flamethrower and especially Gila Monster are probably up there as my new favourite King Gizz tracks
Ah thanks man, yeah this album is a ripper for sure 🤘
Super cool interview, Gene told me he was doing this, so, I had to watch :) and I've have subscribed to your channel too. I was his drum tech on the European/UK 2000 tour. what a fun time that was
Oh man that must have been a rad time - does that include the run they did with Goatsnake?? Thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed, Gene was real class. More interviews to come
@@doodlereview I really can't remember the support bands name, But Joey Castilio was the drummer. and yes it was fun times :)
Ahh Joey C! Legend as well. Awesome stuff man 🤘
The background music is very annoying
Thanks for the feedback, I’ve dialled it right down in newer episodes 👍 cheers
Nah bruh this invalid
Everyone loves this album, so I think you’re right 😂 not hitting for me though 🤷♂️
Dope, gonna check out that Whores album
You’ll love it
I've been listening to the album since it came out, very sweet, varied sound and is an easy album to listen to , not pretentious at all. They never sold it as this pseudo-intellectual, philosophical album, although they do have some tracks that talk about serious topics.
I think this is part of the reason it went down so well with me - deeper topics, heavy themes - but not hitting you over the head with anything and all the while pretty fun!
Grohl played "Go With The Flow" with QOTSA in NYC May 2002 at The Bowery
you know what? I KNEW as soon as I said that, it was a big call and I'd get proven wrong - I thought I might have been cooking with that factoid 😂 still as far as I can remember it at least didn't seem to be a setlist staple in that short time which is interesting.
@@doodlereviewyeah right :) one and only time ever ;)
2000...the Queens with Gene is my favorite era of that band...when they played more slick and smooth less low and slow...songs like "Regular John" "Rickshaw" and "Monsters In The Parasol" benefited from Gene's "garage rock" rhythmic stylings...that stiff robotic catatonic Neu and Can influence came out in their playing...as much as I love the Fredo era, the Grohl era, all of it...the Y2K QOTSA will always be my favorite...
I love this take, and think you might be right. There's something about the psychedelic outsider weirdness of the band in this era that gets overlooked next to the bombast of what would come later. I love it. Thanks for watching...
@@doodlereviewwell worded!
Best debut album in 10 years.
That is a BIG call...but nothing else is immediately coming to mind to contradict that - you might be right 🤘
@@doodlereview 👍
In fact I listened to the 10th time and enjoyable listen. First time I heard it was a solid album. 5/6 time. Loved it even more. They have a good sound the last dinner party have especially like a bit like arcade fire. They are queen there sparks and roxy there and abba too.
I love sludge/stoner/doom but for some reason High On Fire never clicked with me
That's really interesting...are Sleep more your bag?
This was fantastic. I especially liked Gene's insights into Hutch's machinations with low-budget lighting and visuals. Gives me ideas.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! The more I hear about Hutch the more the legend grows in my mind! What a guy...
I discovered Sleep - Holy Mountain and Helmet - Meantime on the same day at an indie record shop in the spring of 1993.
That sounds like a fucking MAGICAL day! How do you get on with High on Fire?
Their best album is definitely one of the first 3. As for which one, almost impossible to say
As a huge fan I'd say there's something great to all of them, but you can't deny there is something special about that 'classic' 98 - 02 era.
Seems a nice guy
Truly a good dude / top bloke
Wow, great interview! It's so cool to hear all of these stories first-hand. Gene is such a cool guy.
Agreed, Gene's a total legend. Glad you enjoyed thanks for watching 🙌
Great work, it’s always so interesting & inspiring to learn more lore about the QotSA-verse. Looking forward to the Secret Machines interview!
Cheers my man! Hopefully a lot more interviews to come!
So awesome to hear the Rated R days, everything man. Thanks for the Go With the Flow story too! and did Gene really play all of Millionaire? as you can tell I like that song haha
Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah Gene played on Millionaire on ‘Deaf’ - he also played on the OG version that was on Desert Sessions ! Big up Gene 🤘
Good job dude!! I LOVE listening to this stuff
Thanks so much, appreciate you watching!! 🙏
What a pleasant guy! First time I heard about Gene was when I really got into Eagles of Death Metal some time around 2007. Also, didn't realise I've experienced such a rare moment in Josh's musical history, when he was on UK tour with eodm with two drummers throughout the whole set!
Yeah Gene was a legend, very accommodating! Very jealous you saw the two drummer Eagles set up! Something I’ve missed every time I seen them
They are so sick
🤘 hopefully a new record soon
Self-titled is always my favourite, but rated R is up there for me. There isn't a single bad album from them imo, just different flavours for different eras. The run of the first 3 is what i always come back to, the production on SFTD is insane.
Definitely - as a long time fan I don’t think there is a bad album, only varying degrees of greatness. I feel like “R” is truly amazing and would be the album that I think stands the test of time against the canon of western music of the last 100 years and represents the band best - but my favourite record can change with the weather. So much good music. Thanks for watching man 🤘
If you have any interest in checking out Dan Boeckner’s further work Handsome Furs’ first two albums & the first Operators EP lean into more keyboard driven New Wave style material & might be worth your time. I also found the new one to be okay. Maybe it’ll lead to a Divine Fits reunion in the next couple years?
Oh I didn’t know there was another Boeckner project - interesting; will have to check it out.
What did you think of this solo record?
@@doodlereview It firmly falls into okay territory for me, given it maybe three listens & not much has stuck out to me as exemplary, but also nothing on it is bad. Just one of those albums that I’ll likely forget about entirely in a couple weeks.
