You don't realize how much someone brings to the table until they're out sick for the day. Still an inspiring show, as always. Wishing Dan a speedy recovery!
Love Mick’s playin on this episode, but realize how much Dan’s different (not better or worse) style adds so much to these episodes. Get well soon Dan !
Having gigged the ever-loving HELL out of a Tube Driver in the 90s? One of the best things are the 'Level' and 'Drive' knobs because of their placement: You can move them with the side of your foot, on the fly at any time while you're playing with almost the same ease as the knobs on your guitar.
Great playing as always. It’s shows like this where the quality and effort you’ve put into the audio really shines through! I happened to pull out my five knob driver last night for the first time in a while. I was surprised how well it cleaned up and how crisp the top end was on my 60s style strat. It didn’t get completely clean but it was a really musical sound right through the range of the volume pot, which isn’t something I often find with overdrives.
Great playing Mick! I have always enjoyed the " pedal comparison" videos, the foundation of That Pedal Show! I remember watching your show when you were still on the GigRig channel, I still look forward to your shows every time, you and Dan are like old friends to me, praying for a swift recovery for Dan, as he is always missed sunce the very early Univibe episode you did with cutout Dan. Cheers Mick & Co. for another classic episode.
Thanks for all the work you guys have done. The effect for me has been that I know more about how to set what I’ve got and then get on with playing the damn guitar. All the best from the Shenandoah Valley in VA.!
Hi Mick. Great effort to make Morcombe and Wise work as a one man show as the amount of work needed whilst also PERFORMING as you both present and play in that context is worthy of praise. Nice wan
Thank you for "coming in to work" alone. We fans appreciate it and know all about how it isn't the same alone as it is with at least one friend. You did very well today (very entertaining)
That Hagerman has some kind of Hifi-articulation and clarity that is rare. Amazing. I'd love to hear that with other guitars and even with an active pickup like an 81.
Thanks Mick! Great comparisons. I have been thinking about that Hagerman and was really wanting a great comparison to help my decision. Also, I think I'm more on the Tubescreamer side😂. Something about that sweet spot.
Came for the learning, stayed for the laughs ! As a fellow Australian, I can confirm ‘That’s not a knife’ is our national motto. Loved Mick’s sly humour Easter Egg … Mick ‘Let’s see the range of the tone knob’ on the Hagstrom … then proceeds to turn it to 2 o’clock and no higher … comedy gold
My main overdrive pedal is a modified Matsumin Valvecaster. It uses a tube as its only method of amplification. I've removed the tone section of the circuit and used a 12AV7 tube instead of the usual 12AU7 or 12AX7. This gives it way more headroom with the gain turned all the way down. I also place an RC Booster right before it. With the gain up, adding the boost gives it lots of gain, and the eq on the rc booster allows me to shape it.
Little Dani should be on the show every episode from now on, let’s hope Big Dani recovers soon, love the Tube Driver, Eric Johnson sound with Marshall head
it's always been my take that, in general, when you pass through something with tubes in it you're going to increase the "girth and the grandeur" while something solid state will give you more edge and focus. Interesting how the Envy rolls up close to the Tube Driver with the extra low end but it doesn't really quite get there. Great comparisons today Mick!
The last couple shows have really touched home with me, because I ran a ts9 into a bd-2 until I bought my D&M Drive. I traded the Boss for a Diamond J-drive, which gives me tube driver vibes.
I still have my Tube Driver. It is one of the old rack unit models distributed/built by Chandler. I got it because in the 80s we all went rack everything. I was never in love with it. Not sure if the rack unit was any different from the pedal. Posted for the algorithm.
Thanks Mick, great tones today!! You must have a ton of headroom on your preamps, I do believe I seen the meter hit 108. The Hagerman sounded pretty epic! I missed Crocodile DanDee 😂 but you did a sterling job without, fair play
Love it Mick , thanks . Was wondering about the Mythos. I " had" a Way Huge "Green Rhino" that was great and had the 2 pots , 100Hz and 500Hz , I found them very useful . The fact that the Envy comes with multiple chips is way interesting . I am generally not a tweaker ,but love that you can dial it in deeper . Thanks again .
Lovely episode Mick (and tiny Dan 😉) 🎸Really like the sound of all of them, personally the Tube Screamer, and its derivaties, is the favorite at this moment 👌
I’m not a big fan of TS sound, but this video was really interesting and diverse sonically. I really like when you guys include tube-driven gain devices. I’d love to see you include AK Big Trees sometime. It’s so versatile as an amp, a boost and an overdrive/distortion pedal. Beyond even!
The TS9 obviously does the blues/SRV thing with a strat, but if you balance its EQ just right with the EQ and vol of a Fender circuit amp you can get a great creamy, sustainy tone that is next level. You have to balance the gain of the amp just right with the gain and level push from the pedal.
I always have had something like a TS around me. But somehow i never really become friends with them but I try to every 4 month or so 😂. That Hagermann Overdriver sound really really well to my ears! It's not as "harsh" as the Tube Driver
So yeah, as far as an actual Tubescreamer I have bought a cpl and immediately got rid of them. However I have a Route 66 that runs a Tubescreamer type circuit and a compressor and it's amazing. Also run a J. Rocket Melody, fantastic. Moving to the Tube Driver side of things, never had one but did have a Blue Tube same idea really and also a ton of bottom end. Using a Blackstar Dept 10 Dual Drive now and it's great as both sides vary enough to make it versatile. It's important to note I do gain stack and to get into that would be too long for here lol. As always great work love the videos 😊
Dave Fox created his Foxrox ZIM cards which is a series of gain pedals bassed on the TS9 topology. They are all useful if you want a whole pallet of amp loadings that you've heard on popular songs.
It would be interesting when you’re using 2 amps to quickly play each on its own when you’re showing what they sound like together. I run a helix system and I’m always looking how to pair amp sims and having them isolated would help with that.
Get well soon, Dan! I've had this awful cold for almost 2 weeks now, no fun at all. Throw some snakes on the barby! 😁 Nice to see the HDRX20 on again, cool amp. I almost bought one until I found a decent deal on a handwired Revera era Deluxe Reverb II for my dry amp. A very interesting comparison of drives! 👍👍
I Have a TubeWorks Real Tube - a close cousin of the Tube Driver and a BK Butler design. I also use a Blues Driver. Both are fine and sound great. If it is a big room with a slightly larger amp and stage volume where a touch of noise is not issue then its the Real Tube. Real Tube runs 110 volts and plugs into the wall power and along with the tube can find radio interference, If its a quiet club or if there is a lot of RF around I go with the Blues Driver running on battery. Always found the TS9 to be too harsh on the high end for my work
“It’s quite hard to get the cleaner output from the tube driver” … That would change significantly with a valve substitution to a 12AU7. Nice improvement for a £10 tube, a screwdriver and 10 mins of easy labour 😃
Guys would it be possible to bring into the show the one and only Robert Smith from the Cure? There never have been a rig rundown about him and his tone from his own words actually… Please make it happen!!!
I usually take my TS-9 off my board and say I’m gonna try something else, and then the day before a gig it goes right back. For me personally it’s just one of the best low gain sounds but also sounds fat with humbuckers.
I have the Ibanez Real Tube Screamer om my small board. I really like the mix knob. Of course I don't beleieve the nuTube is really a tube... but more like a Vacuum Fluorescent display. Mick what tube is in the Tube Driver? Most people that I support use either the 12AY7/6072 or the 12AU7/ECC82. the feeling was the 12AX7 was just to much and the support of the controls was not there. Jim's Tubeklon is also a really good tube version of that sort, plus it doesn't draw a ton of current. Mick thanks good show, thanks!
Great episode! In the vein of tube overdrives/distortions, Dan and Mick - have you guys ever tried the Blackstar HT range? Such as the HT-Drive, etc. They have been around for a pretty long time now, would be curious on your thoughts!
Fairly useful, if a bit “angels on the head of a pin”. The Envy seemed a bit “fuller” somehow, and though I’m not really a screamer guy, I’d consider it
I'm a big BK Butler user (911 and BK/Chandler from the 80s) with Buffer output, which is very important to get the best out of it, and plugged into Bassman 59 LTD and Hiwatt DR103 + Alembic Preamp, it remains one of my favourite drives. Nothing better works apart from the Kingsley Harlot V3, but I've replaced it with a TD on my pedalboard.
Oh wow, that Envy really has got a great thing going on. Especially that bass switch. The other switch? Not so much for me: it's the original clipping (be it 808 or TS9) that makes it so magical to me. It's a very smooth, focussed, and organic overdrive sound with some metallic, jangly quality to it that I have yet to encounter in other designs.
Very enjoyable, Mick. Even more than the glass of Northern Monk Tankpetrol (6.5%) that I've just quaffed - perhaps a little quickly (hic). Get well soon, Dan. It's not the same without you stating "that's not a knife".
Comparing the length of this video to those featuring both of the Dynamic Duo, I'd conclude that 20 minutes of most videos is just banter! Get well soon Dan.
The TS as a cleaner, mid-focussed boost into the driver is a really nice combo. Maybe time for a dual drive? Screamer/Driver, it could be the Road Rage 😂
BK butler in front of a Princeton is one of the best sounds I've ever heard. Never had a Tube Screamer, must get one though, but which one! Origin effects maybe? JHS with all the variants? Original? Aaaaaghhhh!!!!!
well bought the Origin Halycon green, love it and hardly had time to play around with it and the amp (Suhr Badger 30, my Lonestar has conked out for some reason. Love the Suhr Amp almost as much as the Lonestar). Never had a Tube Screamer before, silly me!
Dan's locked in the backroom scratching "lydian dominant" into the walls...
Hahahahaha!
😂
Yes, the guitarist`s mind is so fragile...
😂😂😂😂
All Lydian and no Dominant makes Dan a dull boy. All Lydian and no Dominant...
Tu-Be or not Tu-Be. It was right there. Excited to watch nonetheless!
Did you get that out of the fender solid state manual for a Princeton chorus amplifier?
LOL whether it is Noble or Nobel; in the mind to suffer.
Man, that off-the-shelf TS-9 is a done deal. It's such a perfect sound.
You don't realize how much someone brings to the table until they're out sick for the day. Still an inspiring show, as always. Wishing Dan a speedy recovery!
I’ll get Dan to do some shows on his own.
Love Mick’s playin on this episode, but realize how much Dan’s different (not better or worse) style adds so much to these episodes. Get well soon Dan !

this is great! I always love tone comparison videos from TPS! you guys are the best!

Thanks Mick. I hope you feel better soon Dan. The Overdriver was my favorite today.
Well done, Mick. And beautiful playing in the longer bit on the Envy. Hope Dan's back near 100% by now.
Thanks for all the work you guys have done. The effect for me has been that I know more about how to set what I’ve got and then get on with playing the damn guitar. All the best from the Shenandoah Valley in VA.!
Awesome demo and playing! Ty!
Thank you Duncan!

That's not a knife... LOL! 😆 Seriously though, speedy recovery, mate.

Thank you for "coming in to work" alone. We fans appreciate it and know all about how it isn't the same alone as it is with at least one friend. You did very well today (very entertaining)
Perfect timing. I dusted off my tube driver last week and when been enjoying it’s smooth overdrive ever since
You have a great way of communicating both with words and with the guitar.
Thank you!
That Hagerman has some kind of Hifi-articulation and clarity that is rare. Amazing. I'd love to hear that with other guitars and even with an active pickup like an 81.

The TS 9 and the Hagerman pair nicely! I like the Envy and the Tube Driver too. The goldtop Lester has beautiful tone, even with low gain.
My daughter and I watching this, she says "why is he sick." I shrug my shoulders, she says "maybe he has bum worms?"😂 We watch way too much Bluey😂
Good video Mick. I'm very interested in the Hagerman. I like that you mixed in two old pedals and two new pedals.
The tone on the Lester this week was killer. Nice work Mick and Knit-Dan.
Lovely show Mick. I do adore your playing. It covers the ground I love to play and you are so fluid. Miss Dan too. Get well Mate!
Thank you kindly Scott!

Very good comparison man. And I appreciate that you switched back and forth between the strat and the Les paul. All good pedal’s demoed here.
Thanks
Little Dani should be on the show every episode from now on, let’s hope Big Dani recovers soon, love the Tube Driver, Eric Johnson sound with Marshall head
Love the breakdowns and always find some nice guitar work on these demos!

It was lovely to run into you guys at Cardinal Black. Big fan (of you both and the boys from Cardiff). Great gig and great (pedal) show.👍🏻😎

I use and love the Crazy Tube Circuits space overdrive. It’s a great tube pedal and has a small footprint with a boost switch too

The only TS-style pedal I have ever owned is a Wampler Moxie and I absolutely love it!

It’s a minor thing but I really do love the aesthetic of the Mythos pedal. Zach has a great eye for design.

"That's not a knife".....I spat my coffee all over myself when that was said. Well done, Mick. I laughed my arse off!
Hooray! Me too, im still laughing . Hahahahah!
Great video, thanks. I’ll take that strat and tube screamer.
G'day Mick,
Sorry to hear about Dan's troubles. Please pass on our good wishes.
All the best for all the TPS gang

Well done Mick, Dan's holding you back 🤣
That Hagerman was the best of the four.
Get well soon Dan 😊
Great playing Mick cheers...get back soon Dan
Overdriver in the opening comparison won me over, so far.
Another thumbs up for the Hagerman, really liking it. I'll add it to my Christmas List...Hint Hint Niamh (my wife)!!!

8:30 That Goldtop sounds SO good straight up. Never heard a Les Paul quite like it.
It’s a flipping great machine! People who like the classic fat Burst tone like it less, but I blimmin love it! Cheers!
Goodness, that big headstock Strat from Aynsley is killer. What a great compliment for the Number 1 Strat.
Mick - I know you will forever primarily be a strat man but some magic really happens when you get vibing with that Lester
In the 80s I rocked a JC120 with a Tube Driver in front…. Glorious!
Get well soon, Dan! Out of all of the sounds today all the ones I prefer were from til TS9.
I usually take my TS-9 off my board and say I’m gonna try something else, and then the day before a gig it goes right back. For me personally it’s just one of the best low gain sounds but also sounds fat with humbuckers.

7:59 "That's not a knife." PERFECTION
My JHS Bonsai on My TS9 has a fuzz tone compared to my 808 and TS9. I like the idea of the Envy with the swap-able op amps.
Nice to see Mick playing (more) again the past few shows Dan has had more room.
Man that LP sounds beautiful at 26.45 or so!
Comparing the length of this video to those featuring both of the Dynamic Duo, I'd conclude that 20 minutes of most videos is just banter! Get well soon Dan.
Fine work from knitted Dan there.
The TS as a cleaner, mid-focussed boost into the driver is a really nice combo. Maybe time for a dual drive? Screamer/Driver, it could be the Road Rage 😂
I would have loved to see 2 of my favs a Timmy and an Xotic BB Preamp in the mix :)
I have the three knob tube driver and it's a peach, but I've always wanted to compare it to the extra-nobber.
I'd suggest changing the tube on the tube driver if more headroom is needed. Some 12ax7s are a lot louder and a lot cleaner than others.
Great topic!
Although I must be weird, I use my tube screamer into my tube driver...
Buddy blues just did a video on a TS808 modded by peace Hill fx with a real tube in it. Thoughts? I'm not a TS guy but I thought it sounded great
I dont care about comparing overdrive anyway, but ITS NICE CLEAN HAIRSTYLE MICK
