Having watched English cricket for 50 plus years I have all too often seen England's innings crumble from a score of 94 for 4 to all out for less than 200 . Jonny Bairstow's innings revived memories of Ian Botham's 149 at Headingly 1981 . He should be lauded to the cricket gods forever after this incredible innings . 59-3 with Root out needing 299 looked like an impossibility. But big credit to the character and intent of the middle order to go for the win. In the past we'd have shut up shop and likely lost anyway, now we can forgive some defeats if are showing intent to win. What an innings from Bairstow and Stokes there supporting in the big moment again. Huge change of approach since McCullum's entered already- good signs.

Yeah I thought it was too big an ask when root went. Just didnt seem possible. I expected to see a pretty dramatic collapse tbh. Very glad to be surprised. I think even NZ were in shock at what happened.

Incredible onslaught! It’s not like a limited overs game because there are no fielding restrictions in a Test Match. To sustain such a savage scoring rate is obscene.
Lees, the fourth wicket to fall, fell at 93 after 25.4 overs, meaning the last 206 runs were scored in 24.2 overs. And the last 161 were scored in 16 overs!

The impact of Bazz was clearly evident the way England approached the chase. Jonny! You beauty! You done a poetic justice to Test Cricket. Heartiest congratulations to England and well played New Zealand. Long live Test cricket!!!
