That's what the movie soundtrack album is for LOL! All bits that go into a film are there to drive the narrative forward so kicking back and grooving to the music slows things down and puts audiences off the story-line.
I agree, but it’s still quite annoying when your favorite song in the film is talked over. They usually don’t do that in most musicals and if there is talking, it’s usually like a small phrase that goes with the song.
Its hard for me to say what's my favorite I enjoyed them all, but this song definitely resonates. That whole scene, definitely is something I will remember forever.
@@incognitoburrito7458 That's because this isn't as such a musical. It's a movie about musicians, so there are songs, but the songs don't have anything to do with the story, except the very last one.

Thanks so much for your kind words. This is one of the first sequences I did so I can't remember who was lead animator on Mylar. There was far less pressure on the teams doing secondary characters like Cindy and Mylar so we could let go a bit more without fear of constant revisions, like for lead characters like Mok, Omar and Angel.

Despite of the movies flaws, the music, art and animation always bring me back to watch it just to admire the effort they put on it. I wish they could do a remake, just focusing on making the writting better for certain characters but keep al the 80's effects and all. I am happy not so long ago I was able to find it again and its music, I just hope we had a whole release of the songs, because some like "Hot dogs and sushi" is nowhere to be found complete.
I liked working with Mylar - he was so slimy! He works for his role and Mok works for his I think. Each adds their own unique spice to the mix which makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Movie-making is akin to magic as you watch characters come alive. That was the case on this film and Mylar was definitely part of the magic.
This movie is part of my childhood in the 80s..a time when originality, quality, and freshness was the thing..can't say the same for today's reboot and remake this retale and rearrange that era.
Omar's character could have been better developed. I would have done something like Omar completes the set for Angel's song, and the band is chosen. Mok heaps praise on Angel and insults Omar as talentless, causing Omar to become enraged, quit the band on the spot and storm out the back of the club, saying something like "You don't need me! Mok's right - I'm only holding you back. It's over! We're over!" Angel moves to stop him but Mok encourages her to let him go, as he's only dead weight. Later Omar comes to pick up his equipment and overhears Mok/henchmen talking, vaguely, about the real reason they want to use Angel's voice - he investigates to find the truth and shows how he cares deeply for her, and expresses regret how he behaved. Then he spends the rest of the movie trying to prove what he knows, while Angel thinks he's just trying to sabotage her chance for success. Blah blah and the end plays out similar to how it did, but this time the love between Angel and Omar is actually believable.
It was a good song and I'm glad Debbie reworked it into "Maybe for Sure" in 1989. Although it wasn't a hit, it's still one of my favorite Debbie Harry songs.
As an aspiring creative (and hobbyist animator), I just think it's so cool to see an actual animator running this particular RUclips channel. Also, I would trust Dizzy with my life.
Absolute gem of a movie. Would have been better if they didn't go with the anthropomorphized rats design. I get what they were going with, but I found it to be more of a detriment than an enhancement. All in all though I'm glad this movie is getting more attention.
Debbie Harry cut a version of this in 1990 with different lyrics as Maybe For Sure. At that point though it lost some of it's initial 80's magic but I'm glad she revisited it anyway. I believe this began as a Blondie outtake.
Now for all you'll ever know that you've never seen me And someday you're gonna show what your one desire means Now i only set the stage focus lights on me I make sure the power's on on the scenery Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me? Thank God for bootlegs, because there’s a pretty great sounding recording of the song floating around on the Internet. There’s one from the promotional cassette and another from somewhere else which is unknown where the source is.
Yeah, we were about 80% done when the studio started melting down. They let go all the good people which didn't work well for the ending, which was the last thing they did.
I can't understand why Angel would stay with Omar, i mean seriously... look at this 0:31... that is hate, how can someone can look at their significant other with such a look. And this isnt the only thing he does, during the entire movie, it took Dizzy and Stretch pulling him along for him to help, and most of his help clearly came from a place of jealousy, he doesnt even act like a friend much less a lover.
2:15 Prior to its completion, Rock & Rule was picked up by Hollywood film studio MGM/UA in April 1983. However, they did not care about the animated feature and gave it only an extremely small limited release in theatres on April 15, 1983. "Wow."
That's a bit of a spin on what really happened. The distributors were involved very early in production and it was after the film was delivered years late and millions over budget that the backers backed out.
I suppose I’m in the minority but I don’t think Omar is that bad. The arc of the movie is pretty clear; he starts out as an egotistical and jealous jerk who won’t sing Angel’s song with her. By the end of the film, he and Angel sing together, showing their commitment to each other. I think actions can speak louder than words, rather than having Omar talking about how he’s changed. I think the main issue of the movie is the pacing. It’s not a long movie, but it somehow feels rather sluggish and/or uneven. Either the dialogue is slow in certain parts, or the characters don’t have the same development. There feels like more focus on Angel and Mok, while the three other band members including Omar feel like side characters who run into shenanigans. As captivating as Mok is, I wouldn’t have minded trading some of his focus to develop the others(his voice, cool as it was, started to get grating after awhile). I think the core of movie is there though.
I just wish there was another scene or moment showing him being not such an asshole. He's a little softer with Angel after the audition which was fine as setup, but then he just whines and complains and drags his feet the rest of the movie until the very end. Doesn't have to be much, just something to make him more likeable. The potential was there!!
Yes, some of the music sequences were rotoscoped. I know for sure the Cheap Trick songs were (Born To Raise Hell) but can't recall if this was. To be fair, Marie Anne (lead Angel animator) is an excellent animator so she could have pulled this off without - those moves are not that tough. By the time we were doing this film in the late seventies and early eighties traditional animation was at its zenith of quality and that's what we were going for on this film - Disney quality adult animation.
@@Verneandru I want to meet the lead animator for Mok, that shit was PRISTINE. The facial movements and the way he carried himself were just, ugh, so perfect! They truly captured the slimy-yet-suave aspect of him that made him repulsive to look at, yet somehow still oddly alluring.
That's not surprising. It is definitely mature content and a lot of the jokes would fall flat on the younger crowd. We were going for Disney quality with edgy content so the disconnect was purposeful.

Mok's thinking, "It's a good thing I have this object to tell me if this is the right singer 'cause this rat won't shut up..."
@@incognitoburrito7458 That's because this isn't as such a musical. It's a movie about musicians, so there are songs, but the songs don't have anything to do with the story, except the very last one.
Over time it's easy to forget how good some of this animation truly was. The music and visuals here are exemplary.
I liked the whole movie.
I qould choose Dizzy over Omar any day. He's a 10/10. Supportive, common sense, first person to go after Angel.
But she loves Omar.
Her voice, her beauty, her style,, ugghhh I love her
Omar's such a creep. Angel could do so much better....I'd go with Dizzy.
Any sane chick would
Dizzy is simply husband material
Hell the only thing that's making Omarr not the worst character is the fact Mok exists and he's the damn villain.
Literally everyone would prefer Dizzy, he's the hottest guy in the movie.
If the movie had turned Dizz into the love interest it would've been ahead of it's time.
I love near the intro of Rock and Rule that you don’t really get to see Mok’s appearance fully. We only get to see his eyes in dark shadows while he is smoking.
I love the design of that guy with the big teeth who won’t shut up
Mylar! He's great, yeah
𓊈 𝐀𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥 𓊉 It’s Walt Disney’s facial features on Mortimer Mouse’s body. The man burned a lot of bridges in his day.
Popcultureguy3000 truly? I can see it. That’s funny
Somehow he was right all along.
Mylar: You guys don't listen to me when- I. Said. _DUO!_
Boi lookin like a used car salesman
The music from 1:55 onwards is my favourite part of the song
Bruh same I need an extended version. The plucking combined with her "angelic" voice gives me chills every time.
They uploaded the full movie on retro rerun
Nice avatar I love goofy movie since I was thirteen seeing it in Albuquerque with my best friend and his family and we dug it and I had a crush on Roxanne during my adolescence
Exactly
Nevermind I stand corrected. Mylar, absolutely steals any scene he's in, even when going up against the vocals of Debbie Harry. Whoever animated him clearly had a blast!
"Back by 'popular' demand, tonight's last act..." lmao I love Mylar
Remake this movie but Omar dies and everyone thirsty for Dizzy instead
😭😂
I would totally watch that. Dizzy is bae 💜 Angel shoulda ended up with him. Omar is an ass. Plus he's a drummer, so you know he's got rhythm 😂
I love that 30 years later everyone is finding this movie and collectively being like oh shit Dizzy kinda cute tho. Plus what's Omar gonna do for you? Fuck you behind a gas station and then never call? Nah I'll take the one with a shot at a 401k
Fuck Omar
now Dizzy supremacy is where its at😩
And Mok's mouth get selfawerness
Debbie Harry and Susan Roman had magical vocals to brighten up the stage!!!
This is one of the best Debbie Harry songs I've heard. Incredible singer.
@@Verneandru 😉
lost in a fire forever, I am happy to count myself among those who saw the entire movie.... not great lol but it was magical, with great talent within
Rock On
I love how in films when a songstress starts to play keys, she never keeps it up once she starts singing. Same thing happened in Scott Pilgrim.
What do you mean
Anodos Arcade she was holding that little keyboard thing, but immediately stopped playing it after 2 seconds
@@ginkgothestink-o6949 ^ Yup. And yet the keys are still being played, somehow 😂
I actually had the chance to meet angles voice actor this weekend and oh my goodness is she such a sweet lady I told her how much of a fan I am of her role as angel and she was surprised that someone my age knew rock and rule and gave me a personalized signed print!!
Nothing like 80's animation and the music is excellent rock and roll let's rock ohhhh yeah
No wonder the villain wanted Angel for her voice. It's beautiful ❤️.
It's Deborah Harry after all
@@mariuspoppFM Good to know.
The last part is beautiful, gives me chills
I can imagine Omar singing "I want you to want me" as an apology for Angel off screen after the movie's over. XD
Quite possibly the reason I love rock bands with melodic female vocals.
Loved this movie and loved this song but the vocals to bring out the demon is what got me, her voice is amazing.
Angel's song is very good.
Fernando Ramos I know right?
first a hateful music then a loving music I love this movie
I love Milar, his character is truly astounding. The voice fits his entertaining personality and his selfish ego. Truly a better character that Mok.
Never seen Rock & Rule but I’m gettin real Flushed Away vibes from these character designs
This movie is part of my childhood in the 80s..a time when originality, quality, and freshness was the thing..can't say the same for
today's reboot and remake this retale and rearrange that era.
I love her
Very few peopl know this movie thanks for posting it
I love this animation and I love Debbie's amazing voice
That plot already sounds much better!! Makes Omar’s jackass attitude a little more reasonable and much realistic than being an egotistical asshole
Your suggestion is great. If only we have a chance to do a remake.
That would've been REALLY better than the Omar we got.
Dude! You completely fixed it! I wish you were one of the writers on this film. They made Omar such an unlikable Douchebag!
It was a good song and I'm glad Debbie reworked it into "Maybe for Sure" in 1989. Although it wasn't a hit, it's still one of my favorite Debbie Harry songs.
I'm surprised Mok tolerated Mylar's jabbering during Angel's song. Thought he was gonna get the classic cartoon goon head-bonk.
As an aspiring creative (and hobbyist animator), I just think it's so cool to see an actual animator running this particular RUclips channel.
Also, I would trust Dizzy with my life.
Everyone talking about how Angel should have gotten with Dizzy. By the time I finished watching, I shipped Dizzy and Stretch
Definitely not gonna steal this scene for a villain/hero phantom of the opera esque story. No sir!
- a liar who got heavily inspired
Give me da fic name please!!!
god I love this movie. glad I found it. I wasn't even born when it came out glad I found it tho. it's so underrated tho AAAAAHHHH
Absolute gem of a movie. Would have been better if they didn't go with the anthropomorphized rats design. I get what they were going with, but I found it to be more of a detriment than an enhancement. All in all though I'm glad this movie is getting more attention.
I just found the canadian version of movie and love it. Showing friends. Sad the original wide screen was lost to a fire.
Debbie Harry cut a version of this in 1990 with different lyrics as Maybe For Sure. At that point though it lost some of it's initial 80's magic but I'm glad she revisited it anyway. I believe this began as a Blondie outtake.
This movie deserves more recognition.
Lyrics: Standing on the side, watching the one you love not notice you
Literally: Kicking her boyfriend off the stage
songs like this - I really wish there was an official soundtrack for this movie
She always had a really good voice
If everyone had just listened to Omar only to keep playing his song, they could’ve avoided so much trouble! 🤣
Angel’s song is better than song nowadays i must say. 👌
This baseline is kicking my ass!
Now for all you'll ever know that you've never seen me
And someday you're gonna show what your one desire means
Now i only set the stage focus lights on me
I make sure the power's on on the scenery
Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me?
Watching offside as i wait just in case you need me
So i still will set the stage, send my thoughts to you
I'm receiving every wave that sent love, sent love through
You know, love's not what you think
Too weak to stand on like quick sand in which you sink
Love is anything you make it
How can i let you feel my love
Feel me and still feel free
I mean i have the answers now
So what?
Oh, what will the signal be for your eyes to see me?
Watching offside as i wait just in case you need me
So i still will set the stage, send my thoughts to you
I'm receiving every wave that sent love, sent love through
Now i have revealed exactly why i'm here
I'll be your angel if you wanna see how perfect sharing love with an angel can be
As sung by the great Debbie Harry! Thanks for taking the time to transcribe for us.
2:13
I like the animation detail and colors here
Fantastic sound quality btw
Thank God for bootlegs, because there’s a pretty great sounding recording of the song floating around on the Internet. There’s one from the promotional cassette and another from somewhere else which is unknown where the source is.
This clip made me watch the movie. That ending went so hard; I wish i could find it on RUclips
Yeah, we were about 80% done when the studio started melting down. They let go all the good people which didn't work well for the ending, which was the last thing they did.
God daaammmmn this movie is hella underrated
Daniel Ingraham true
I can't understand why Angel would stay with Omar, i mean seriously... look at this 0:31... that is hate, how can someone can look at their significant other with such a look.
And this isnt the only thing he does, during the entire movie, it took Dizzy and Stretch pulling him along for him to help, and most of his help clearly came from a place of jealousy, he doesnt even act like a friend much less a lover.
"Born To Raise Hell" Is such a good song. Great vocals on it.
Angel should have gotten with Dizzy. He supported and looked out for her through the entire movie.
2:11 mok want that cookie so fakin bad
2:26 he really does 😂
Absolutely love the animation and music in this movie.
2:01 and then the drop give me cold chills every time

Prior to its completion, Rock & Rule was picked up by Hollywood film studio MGM/UA in April 1983. However, they did not care about the animated feature and gave it only an extremely small limited release in theatres on April 15, 1983.
"Wow."
That's a bit of a spin on what really happened. The distributors were involved very early in production and it was after the film was delivered years late and millions over budget that the backers backed out.
@Verneandru "Thanks for the updated additional information - that is well appreciated."
I love this song
2:14 the GIF that brought us here xD
I'm right there with you, too many people seem to want his character arc spoon fed when it's pretty clear.
I just wish there was another scene or moment showing him being not such an asshole. He's a little softer with Angel after the audition which was fine as setup, but then he just whines and complains and drags his feet the rest of the movie until the very end. Doesn't have to be much, just something to make him more likeable. The potential was there!!
That bit at 2:15... That does look like rotoscoped footage. Is it?
It's really smooth and fluid from something made in the 80s.
@@WobblesandBean Mok was done by Robin Bud who I believe is still working for Nelvana in Toronto. You might be able to contact him there.
Some scenes are
idk how angel can be with a man that throws tantrums like that
This movie gave me a lot of weird feelings as a pre-teen.
That's not surprising. It is definitely mature content and a lot of the jokes would fall flat on the younger crowd. We were going for Disney quality with edgy content so the disconnect was purposeful.
I have this movie on VHS.
And i'm still looking for it on DVD and/or Blu-Ray.
And Deborah Harry 😻❤️🌹 (Blondie) sounds amazing in this movie 🐱👍.
Greetings from Vantaa, Finland 🇫🇮.
Thank you 4 posting this & your work on this Canadian Cult Classic!!! A beloved film from my youth! They truly "Don't make them like this anymore!" Keep up the great work! Cheers
I can’t help but to think Angel is singing this song to omar
The animation and the character design are freaking wild
Know what? This would actually make a KILLER Broadway stage show. Obviously, a few things would have to be tweaked for a more modern audience, but not much.
And also, I'd love to see Cindy have a bigger role in a potential stage version.
Realmente muy hermosa la mezcla de la animación con la voz de Debby Harris
This is the weirdest comment section I've ever stumbled onto on RUclips and not in a good way.
Great song, loved the film, please burn this comment section. Thank you.
She is so hot❤
Nelvana was my fucking childhood. (If you think I'm joking, I'm not, they made a lot of kids shows too.) When I heard that they made this movie I was ecstatic. I'm planning on watching it over the weekend cause I'll have time then. Based on this clip alone, I can already tell I'm going to love it.
Such a cool movie!!
that thumb nail “imma firing my FABULOSO”
Dont let the HH fans find out about this.
02:01 the GOOSEBUMPS OMG YES! YES!
And I have returned, summoned by the algorithm.
YT: Hey, wanna watch a clip from Rock and Rule that you watched 4 years ago?
Me:...Sure.
This song goes by the name of Maybe For Sure on iTunes or Spotify if you want to listen to this on there
That's actually a different Blondie song! Same melody but different lyrics. The full version of this song is on RUclips if you search for it
