Puccini’s final opera is a glorious pageant of rich colour, dance and drama in Andrei Serban’s classic staging.
In the court of Princess Turandot, suitors who fail to solve her riddles are brutally killed. But when a mysterious Prince answers correctly, suddenly he holds all the power - and a glorious secret. When life hangs in the balance, can love conquer all?

Well last night (8th April 2023) I attended and I can say now, no video can ever match the awesome spectacle and raw power of being there. When you feel the music pushing through you into your chair, it is simply sublime and a phenomenon which I am humbled by and glad to have experienced. Thank you ROH 🙏

Je sors du cinéma…magnifique représentation, les voix, l’orchestre, la mise en scène, costumes, chorégraphie, tout est réuni pour réussir cet opéra…et particulièrement ces formidables Turandot et Liu…👏👏👏

I have seen many performances of Turandot through the years. Many famous names. My favorite leading lady in the title role has thus far been Gwyneth Jones.

This production is wonderful. I have seen it several times. Gwyneth Jones, Ghena Dimitrova, Eva Marton, Olivia Stapp were my Turandots. Ernesto Veronelli, Lando Bartolini, Franco Bonisolli were my Calafs.

Saw this at the cinema… fabulous production with three stunningly good principals. (Thought Yonghoon Lee made a particularly compelling Calaf.) There wasn’t a weak spot anywhere ( if you don’t mind the central premise of the plot, but hey! This is opera not verité.)

Looks like great production! Mr director needs to be reminded however that singers are not uneducated idiots that they need someone to EXPLAIN to them theatrical nature of the opera. They probably know their role more intimately than any director ever will. Looks like singers are on the bottom of the theater’s pyramid … I wonder what the audience think of this? To me it seems ludicrous . Without them there would be NO opera! Respect!

This production is 40 years old, and it looks it - over coloured, over busy, and stylistically horribly inconsistent, with its mixture of Tai Chi and Commedia del Arte. It was just too too much to be theatrically compelling. The singing also failed to thrill, with the exception of Liu (Masabane Cecilia Rangwanasha) who was gloriously moving. All in all, terribly disappointing.
