    I took my knocking BMW N55 engine apart to see what was making all of that noise and what I found was way worse than I ever expected or seen. There were so many broken pieces in in this engine that I bet my BMW 335 wanted to cry after being in the same garage! This teardown has been fun so far as I've never expected what I found and that makes it exciting to work on. It may not be a savable engine at the end, but I sure will take it apart and find all of the issues it has caused itself. So far I have taken the front axle differential and the support bearing off, removed all the oil pan bolts and then removed the oil pan itself. To investigate further, I removed the oil pick up line and the oil pump as well. We were finally able to see parts of cylinder one and the most likely rod knock and destruction it left behind. Part 2 coming soon to investigate this engine failure further!

    The discoloration on the crank is a dead giveaway that oil stopped flowing at some point. With the amount of heat that poor crankshaft had to endure, it's now out tolerance in just about every dimension, it's toast. Probably though, something happened prior to the oil starvation. Where you running funny boost numbers or a tune? Tunes usually have overboost and ignition timing pull disabled...for maximum power. I other words, the engine can't protect itself.

    Love the cardboard idea, wish I did that when i took the oil pan off my blown N20. I suggest you download/back up whatever steps you need from newtis since it might go down for good really really soon- the domain is already seized.
    I'm amazed how the metal disintegrated- looks like plastic lmao.
    Your channel has been such a huge help for my engine replacement on my X3, so thank you so much brother. Much love.

      I tried magnet organizers etc, but the cardboard trick works best for me, glad you like it too. As far as the newtis, I have backups of what I need :).
      I was in SHOCK when I took the oil pan off. I'm not sure how it came off on video, but I just not expecting it to be like that or have that much damage. I'm glad you are finding the videos useful, I love comments like this, keeps me wanting to record stuff when I do my projects. Cheers!

      Aluminium bolts are single use as they stretch and must be replaced, but this method will give you a positive clue where the new one's go though!

    Give serious consideration to swapping in a B58 in its place. You can pick on up for under $10k with low mileage and it’s a much better engine than the N55.

      I'd love to do that, but the amount of wiring loom and other modifications needed would be outside my knowledge zone.. unless there are some conversion kits for this. Great idea, though.

    What do the other rod bearings look like mate? By the way i think she is toast. i just junked an N55 with only a spun bearing. Shame i am in Australia because aside from number 3 big end the engine is perfect...

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  4 года назад

      The other ones look just fine as far as I can tell. They may not be perfect and I'd replace them if it was worth rebuilding this engine, but they are fine. I'm afraid you are right.. at this point I'm just taking the rest of it apart to see exactly what blew up.

    What brand engine oil do you usually use? How often do you change it? Do you warm up the car properly in the morning. What mods/tune you have on the car? I have an n54 and 2011 n55 and maybe I should start thinking about selling these cars lol

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  3 года назад

      You will need a timing chain tool to time the engine. You won't be able to install it by eye and have it run properly (most likely self destruct if it's off time enough). Here is a full video on Timing Chains: ruclips.net/video/-apNebfNCMA/видео.html

    • @questions703
      @questions703 3 года назад

      @@SimpleCarGuy I have the timing tool. The box it came in has two horizontal bridges for the vertical hook pillars that hold the camshafts in place. Of the two horizontal bridges, one black and the other golden greyish (which has N55 written on it), I have tried using either at different attempts of setting the timing. After torquing the cam bolts and replacing the pretension tool with tensioner, turning the engine to ascertain if the timing's correct returns futile, as the intake cam sprocket particularly starts rotating to some degree before the rest of the camshaft(lobe section) joins in the rotation. As a result, timing is off.

    • @questions703
      @questions703 3 года назад

      @@SimpleCarGuy my question is, do the cam sprockets need to be in their locked positions for the timing to be set properly?
