Precious Moments as Baby Elephant, Khanyisa Tries to Play with Orphan, Timisa under Kumbura’s Watch

- Khanyisa found time to play with her favourite playmate in this new day in the wilderness with her herd as she tries to sort with Timisa but Timisa is actively engaged in finding and pulling our roots to eat. Food trumps playtime and we know it’s likely Khanyisa has other things on her mind while trying to wrestle heads with her friend - i.e. stealing Timisa’s roots!
Khanyisa is still learning how to dig up and break roots for herself as she develops more strength and skills while learning from her elephant family. She is still two years of age - turning three in September (an approximate given by our wildlife vets since she is a rescued orphan).
Adine and Tigere help to feed the calf roots while Kumbura sweetly keeps a watch over her, protective and loyal as always. It’s endearing to see all the youngest orphans in the herd, foraging and socialising together contentedly in their wilderness.
Watch as Khanyisa picks up a graze on Adine’s knee! Elephants’ sense of smell is incredible and much more relied upon than their sight. Adine had been away for a few days and Khanyisa showed she had missed her human friend, wanting to play with her in the wild today too!
This trio of BFFs is the best. Hate that they were brought together under such sad circumstances, but their resilience to survive and thrive is the glue that makes them such a strong group.

Kumbura looks to be as devoted to Khanyisa as a mama would be to her child and I wonder if she now sees her that way? She reminds me of Setombe following her Klaserie around. Sweet and patient Timi ❤

I love watching the video when Kumbura would get excited to see Khanyisa all 3 of them do things I think they missed by not having a herd like Timi was found along and feeding herself so she is always eating like she thinks that she will starve if she doesn't. She also had a mature spirit about her maybe because her mother was older. Kumbura wants to be a mother so bad to give back what she was given by this herd and little Kay just wants to play. I hope one day she'll have a little sister to give her attention to.

@@fabienneroure9995 Absolutely she is one strong independent Miesiekind it’s hard for me to believe this is the same horribly wounded sickly baby calf we first laid eyes on. Khanyisa truly was one deaths door back then but she’s proven over and over that she’s a warrior Princess I see myself in her as a very vulnerable weak toddler that I once was as I too had to fight my own battles some of which like Sunshine I came precariously close to losing but we both made it. I just wish our Angel Fenya could’ve won her fight as well and joined the herd too in the end though at least her last 3 weeks on this Earth she got to experience comfort and peace then slipped away knowing she was loved.❤️❤️🐘🐘

With all of the chaos and fears in the world today these videos showing the love and beauty of elephants sure is a welcome feeling in our hearts, no matter where we live. I am in USA and will never have the privilege of meeting this extraordinary family, BUT I love them totally. I'm positive most all that are dedicated to this site love these precious elephants too.💞 The love that they constantly give one another should be mankind's first lesson.

Don't you think about how when we watch the love of every member of that herd we can actually feel the love inside us ? I've cried over the slaughter in Ukraine so much and I have watched all the ways that these marvelous creatures show love and concern for Lil K and each other and it seems like such a loss for mankind, who can hate so easily over stupid, stupid issues. Kumbura has always been my favorite allomom to Khanyisa. But I also admire the way that Lundi trusts the other females to mother, teach and look after her. Sometimes Lundi is nowhere in sight, but doesn’t worry because she knows the little girl is just fine with her other surrogate mothers and the herd as a whole.

The only time I ever got close enough to pet an elephant,was sadly at a carnival where she was forced to give rides to people. She was an African girl. People thought I was crazy because I was talking to her quietly. I offered her my hand and she actually touched my fingers ever so gently with her trunk.I fell in love even more with elephants that day. Then the awful guy who owned her yelled at me,for harassing the elephant.Horrible people in this world 😢

I will forever have this delious memory of kumbura going to the nursery to meet and get khanysia from the nursery. Kumbura really doesn't want humans around the two littler ones. Although she'd never hurt Adine or Tigere, she wants those two babies to herself. She is not innately selfish, just very aware of the good and bad in the human species. Kunbura equals tenderness.
Such a great relationship and so much care for teh whole herd, to get such remarkable footage.

My gosh, they can smell the least difference in someone’s normal smell and are always curious to check it out. Her focusing on Adine’s scrape reminds me of when they could smell the daughter, Lente’s injection site on her arm from the dentist the day before.
it is fascinating how animals can smell a wound even a tiny one...my large Male cat is very sensitive to changes and particularly when I've had various scrapes and cuts.

Am I reading this wrong. Khanyisa is only a couple of years old. Says she was rescued in 2009? Or was it supposed to say 2019? Love the way she charms her care takers into giving her what she wants. She is a lucky girl! I could watch these videos all day💕
No it says Kumbura was rescued in 2009.

Being just nosey here bc you know a thousand things more: would it help our meisiekind if the carers lose the soil around the roots to make her more confident as she keeps building her trunk strength?
I think they want her to build up her trunk Naturally. I see them give her cut off bushes, grass and such, but I think they want her to be self efficient too.as much as possible. She is their heart, but only if her heart is allowed to grow its full potential.

Do you supplement food for the whole herd during winter months when only roots are available??
They supplement their food each morning & evening. The Herd goes out all day but they don't forage (I'm guessing this) the same way wilder herds do. I think the wilder herds spend more time eating in the bush than our Herd.
