    I've watched a lot of donkey videos. This thoughtful film introduced me to a wider world of how donkeys are suited to different environments and tasks. Side note: I was surprised that Snowflake's trail training was done solo, and not in the company of a veteran donkey. I was also surprised to learn that donkey's do not have waterproof coats. And I was impressed at how donkeys can take over and perform tasks with little or no human supervision.

    I knew little about donkeys, and heard the stereotypes that they're slow, stubborn and not too bright. Everyone knows that to be called an ass or jackass is a put-down. But I sensed that donkeys were good companions from seeing other videos. Now I have a real appreciation for their intelligence, strength, durability and loyalty. Love those big kind eyes and those great radar ears!

      may be they feel how we feel about them. many farmers don't love animals, beat them and treat them like a object without soul and feelings. no wonder why they are stubborn. i love animals they feel it and i have good relationship with them, but its not only love, one should know body language.

    Yesterday I visited a local donkey sanctuary, one that I used to volunteer at. Joey, a standard donkey, was always my favourite. He stood still by the fence, allowing all the visitors to pet and touch him, I wrapped my arms around his head and cuddled him. These animals are surely one of the most amazing creatures on earth, absolutely smart, fearless, intuitive, affectionate.
    Joey was beaten with a baseball bat by his previous owner and then abandoned, tied to a tree in a field. It took him awile to trust humans again, he wouldn't come near for a long time.
    But now, the sanctuary owner says she would 100 % trust Joey with a young toddler or infant!

    I've had the privilege to take daily care of a she-donkey for 4 years. Before that, I was already very familiar with horses, but this was very different. Donkeys can not be made to do what one wants, one needs to establish trust and affection with them. Once that's done, one can ask them almost anything. She was very unyielding towards my dog Kate, who on her side, was sociable with almost any other animals. I've spent much of my life educatin dogs and socialising them and love to do so. With this donkey it was quite a job, but a pleasant and rewarding one. With my cats there never was a problem, one of them even played on the donkey's back and kept falling off when he tried to catch her swishing tail. At other times he'd just sit on a fence post with her sniffing at him. I learned a lot from her and that's what it's all about with animals : learning from them how to befriend them. I have a very fond memory of a circus elephant who was standing alone, tied to a picket with one foot and visibly bored. I walked up to her cautiously looking at how she reacted. When finally I stepped clos and stroked her trunk, she embraced me with it,and snorted gently at me.

One thing I've read about donkeys not specifically mentioned is that oftentimes they are used to protect herds from wolves and danger because they are so brave & ferocious. We have 4 donkeys and 4 horses. When it comes to toughness the donkeys are the winners. They are also very expressive and greet you enthousiastically when you get to the field. Horses do the same but only make a little sound. When stray dogs enter the field and want to chase the donkeys their life is over in a heartbeat if they can not escape. In winter it has to be real bad weather before they hit the shelter. During storms the horses seek protection behind a wall but the donkeys enter the cave on the land and know exactly where to stand to ride out the storm. It took time to build up a bond with them but once it is there they are some of the most loyal pets you can imagine. One call and they race down to greet you. They love cuddles and smell you and nibble a bit as a sign of affection. Their weakness is their hoofs in wet climates, you need to check regularly as little stones tend to find their way in causing infections so look carefully how they walk as they are not very quick in showing signs of pain. A tiny limp, almost impossible to see can stil mean some serious hoof injury requiring treatment.

    I used to take care of a donkey and two horses. They all had a paddock big enough to run around in. If one of them somehow got out, the others would raise hell. One day I heard the horses sounding the alarm and went out to find Isaac, the donkey, running loose outside the paddock. The gate was closed! I couldn't figure out how he got out, but I caught him and put him back in the paddock, making sure the gate was closed, latched and locked. Went back in the house and 10 minutes later, the horses were sounding the alarm again. I went out and saw Isaac prancing around like he was the sharpes
    t thing on four legs. I caught him again and led him back into the paddock. I told him he was a little shit and that he thought he was sooo smart. Then I said, "" Okay, smart-ass, why don't you show me how you got out?" He walked over to a grown-over corner of the paddock and walked right through a hidden hole in the fence and turned and looked at me very smugly. I stood there and LMAO!! Donkeys are very, very smart!

      They are often kept together with sheep, goats, and horses as defenders because they will kill predators. Unlike their reputation, they are smart and brave. And they are also extremely affectionate if they've been treated well. They love to be loved! And they make excellent caring companions to blind horses, whom they will take wonderful care of, better than another horse will usually do. Goat's are often very good with blind hoses too.

    I grew up with a donkey. They can be watchdogs and companions, but if they don't want to do something, they won't! Sheep on the other hand are incredibly stupid!

    I knew a little about donkeys, but never realized there was so much to know. I knew they were friendly and made great companions, but didn’t know much more. They’re wonderful creatures - and I love the way they take care of each other. Thank you soo much. :)🫏🫏🌷🌱

    Awesome info about donkeys. I do have a question though- how many of the donkeys like Geronimo plunge to their death trying to climb those uneven rocky surfaces with a heavy unbalanced load on their backs?

    • @fairandbalanced65
      @fairandbalanced65 20 дней назад

      That would be an extremely rare event. Their balance is unparalelled even with the pack not entirely even. If the donkey thinks it is too dangerous he or she will not walk the trail. Mules have a similar ability. I climbed a bunch of trails in China that were very steep and they never missed a step.

      That was heart breaking ,totally selfish and unnecessary.What made it sadder was it roaming around trying to get accepted by her adult new peers and get the cold shoulder,then hearing her sad little cry.I definitely felt alot better when I saw her get attention and affection towards the end.
