When Root calls Reese, the first thing she does is to commend them on (officially) solving her friend's case. Another scene early on where Root briefly drops her facade and seems genuinely grateful.
This episode makes me feel sorry for Root, even though she is the villain. It looks like she blamed herself for her best friend’s death because there was nothing she could have done, so she devoted the rest of her life to tracking down criminals and bringing them to justice to make up for the one who got away and she thought she had to be as cruel and ruthless as them in order to conquer them. The tragedy of Root is, she became what she hated.
Actually she blamed everybody else in that town. She tried all she could to get them to listen but none of them would.. hence why she considers some people "bad code".
