  • For this video, I hop in my friend Tyler's Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 and give you my first impressions. We have been trying to do this video for awhile now, so I was very antsy to get behind the wheel of this all wheel drive blast of a car. Nothing like too good ol' feeling of 90's nostalgia. Thanks for watching!

    This is the first car I wanted to have. Saw one on the way back from school and was blown away. Underated like the 300ZX. Have been in both and they just produce power effortlessly. The GTO/3000 GT had AWS back in the 90s. Imagine that for a budget supercar. Awesome

    Love 3000GT VR4's!!!!!
    If you haven't driven a well maintained and not-stock VR4 then you are truely missing out on a very fast and fun GT sport cars. Very well ahead of its time. The AWD system is extremely grippy and comes stock with a LSD center and rear diff and aftermarket front LSD's.
    And by not stock i mean basic power upgrades (BPU): downpipe, fmic upgrade, and boost controller set to 14-15psi (max psi on stock injectors). Stock boost for the 1G he's driving is only 6-7 psi :() !!! So you can imagine what 14psi and AWD and electronic dampers will feel like. Total package. Ive had two vr4's. And now i have a BMW 335i. And ive had a ton of other manual trans sports car. Yes the BMW is faster, but i miss my VR4's
    No one could keep up with me from a dig with my vr4. Launching was addicting!! And a well maintained VR4 is very reliable. Most got neglected and repairs will get expensive. Stock engine will hold 600AWHP and all thats needed are bigger twin turbos to obtain that.

    • @MrMudkipz
      @MrMudkipz 8 лет назад +4

      +Anthony G I agree, my VR-4 has 16g twin turbos on it and gets easily 600AWHP!

    • @Exavolt
      @Exavolt 8 лет назад +5

      +Anthony G Precisely, I feel like these cars get a bad wrap, but for all the wrong reasons. The 3000gt I got was religiously serviced on a more than regular basis by the previous owner who owned it for almost it's entire life and it runs like an absolute champ. Though there are things that will go that are pretty annoying, specifically the ECS, which is just a headache and it's easier to just swap in standard struts or coilovers in the long run. So basically, as long as you take care of them, don't try to milk too much out of them, and are very on top of preventative maintenance when something pops up they'll give you no problems. The 6g72tt is a very good engine that will treat you well if you treat her well.. One MAJOR THING though, this is NOT a car for someone who's inexperienced mechanically. If you get one of these never having done an entire engine and transmission rebuild and you don't have a mechanic's ear, you will absolutely run into problems.

    • @MrMudkipz
      @MrMudkipz 8 лет назад +6

      So true, this is a car that need to be loved and taken care of, a lot of maintenance to prevent it from breaking, and it will last you forever.

    • @AgentWK
      @AgentWK 7 лет назад

      Anthony G On a stock first get VR4, is it safe to crank the boost to 14 psi? I know on the second and third gens you can.

    • @CutACrow
      @CutACrow 5 лет назад +1

      +Agent WK I wouldn't recommend it stock. I own a VR4 (Stealth) which is not stock mind you but needless to say the stock 1st gen motors are 2 bolt motors whereas 2nd gen was 4 bolt with other reinforced parts. At most id recommend about 11.

  • @SuperFast3OOOGT
    @SuperFast3OOOGT 10 лет назад +106

    Don't floor it wide open throttle, that's what blows the motors in these??? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. These cars are just as reliable as anything else that is properly maintained throughout it's life, that's a fact. Mine is a daily driver and I'm anything but easy on it. It's all about maintenance and unfortunately the maintenance costs for these aren't something that most people who buy them 2nd or 3rd hand can afford. The biggest problem with these cars are the owners who neglect them.

      wowcrazy70 well my answer is probably a little biased since I now own 2 and love them. But if you’re planning on doing all that I’d say go for it if the car is in decent shape. One thing to look out for is that the 60k or 120k service was done to it because that’s very important in the life of these cars. If they were done and everything looks and feels good then it shouldn’t give you too many problems. Still the only major expensive problem I had was my ecu. So make sure you look at that or have an expert look to make sure the ecu is good. if it’s just the capacitors that are bad in the ecu you can replace them for like 10-20 bucks.

    I was telling a friend of mine recently how my obsession with these cars came to be. I think I was like 10yrs old when grab Turismo 1 came out and I remember this being literally one of the best cars in that game. I fell in love with the 99 front end and have always preferred this car to the Supra twin turbo or the 300zx of the time. We have an inside joke calling them "the legendary birds" in a Pokemon-ish sense of humor, but this is the bird I've always wanted. I'm going to look at one tomorrow as a project car and found this video. It put a smile on my face, great job!

    Had the 93 VR4 for 3 years. Loved it. Way ahead of it's time. AWD, 4 wheel steering, large cross drilled ventilated ABS, 300 hp and awesome sounds. 0-60 in like 5.2 seconds. The sticker on this car new was 47k so it was definitely in the lower exotic realm at the time. Bought mine used for 25k and got to say it was super reliable and no issues the whole time I had it. Really miss that car.

    Glad to see a good review video of a VR4 for once by someone who actually knows a little bit about what they are talking about. So many people talk bad about them, when they have never drove one, or seen one perform. They say "oh they are heavy, and they are slow etc." when they really aren't. They were not a whole lot heavier then the Supra or the GTR, and when they were released originally were actually faster until the MK4 came out, and the R33 and then R34 came out. if you watch the old comparison videos, Really the only thing that ever separates these cars seems to be the drivers MOST of the time.but the VR4 also had options for things like Upgraded Turbos, (13G's instead of 9B's) 6 Piston AP racing Brakes with 2 Piece slotted rotors. As well as as the years went on they got better, the ECU was more efficient, they fitted it with a 6 speed to shorten the gears, they got a caliper upgrade to fit larger rotors in 1994, as well as lightened the cars up by as much as 400lbs. Power can range anywhere from 276hp-320hp on the 9B turbos depending on the year and where the car came from. There were also Hennessy Editions of these cars, I must say I do kinda wish you had driven one that was a little more taken care of, (not knocking the owner) I could kinda tell it wasn't the best condition VR4 to test drive and review...Also at the end I'm not sure that guy really knows what hes talking about. I've had several of these, including 2 VR4s, both and stock, to basic mods, to mildly upgraded and Reliability was never a question for me. I just did basic maintenance and didn't crank up the boost it was great, I daily drove my 91 VR4 (which is known to be the worst year to have) with basic mods, and on 17 psi with no fancy tuning, I raced it, as well as drove it everyday, as it ended up being my only car for awhile. I also would put close to hard 300 miles with plenty of WOT time on it during the weekends especially if there were events or shows going on, and never with any incident. I am partially biased tho, I love these cars, and have since I was a kid. I am looking to start collecting and restoring them. Don't take this as me correcting you! as everyone obviously has different tastes and opinions, I just wanted to give you a solid comment from a 3000GT owner/Enthusiast. Thanks again tho for taking time to review it!

    Great vid! Was my dream car since I was a kid, and I finally got my hands on one. I have a 1995 VR-4 in Pearl White, she's my baby. I first saw them when I was a kid in middle school, and when you said how when you see one on the road it just captivates your imagination, I totally related to that because that is how I felt! I fell in love with them when I was a kid; the curves of the wide body, the stance, the aesthetics... just so ahead of its time and I have such a soft spot for them. I live in NM and I get compliments on the car all the time, I don't want to say I own the Only Pearl White VR-4 in my city or even the state, but I have yet to see another one. I take very much pride in it, and I take very good care of it, I am its 3rd owner, and it currently has 133K on the dash. Exterior wise the paint job is almost immaculate, with the exception of a few smudges here and there. I don't race it or beat up on it or abuse it because I'm aware of it's mechanical age, I got the car bone stock and I have only added a K&N air intake on it and I don't want to mess up what I have. She has been good to me reliability wise due to my driving style in it. Anyone else out there who is contemplating one and worried about mechanical issues, as long as you don't abuse it, it will treat you good. Just like at the end of the video when you hear his friend say ease into it, don't just straight floor it, that is the key.
    Again good video David! Glad to see respect and admiration for this car still alive :)

    Swapping a 4G63 in place of a 6G72-T is like getting yourself neutered to perform better in bed. The 6G72-T has been proven to push over 1000hp on a stock shortblock by more than one company through hundreds of drag strip passes over many years with no failures. The only thing that you have to be careful of is the hypereutectic pistons when pushing a lot of boost (detonation is not your friend).
    I don't know. After owning a Stealth RT/TT and a 2nd gen VR-4 and learning so much about them, including how much BS and misinformation floats around out there it still irritates me when I see people say something ignorant or untrue. Most "facts" people have are because they know someone who knows someone who had a problem.
    One of those is "notorious for mechanical issues" like you said here. Neither of my cars had one problem, and neither were stock and both driven very hard. The weaknesses that do exist are well known and have solutions out there to solve them. The stock W5MG1 was the most known for transmission issues, and those were because of a couple of design flaws. the W6MG1 (6spd) is more or less bulletproof unless you are a complete nunty. What seems to be the cause of most problems is the owners. A lot of these cars got rode hard and put up wet with improper maintenance, which on a somewhat powerful, slightly heavy turbo car never tends to go well.

      @@CutACrow i recently purchased a yellow 3000gt SL and immediately did the 120k service. Still ironing on out some issues with a CEL (the issue doesn't seem to effect performance but it its still annoying as shit to see it.)I think what im running into is just previous owner neglect. The car clearly hasn't been beat on and considering its an SL its quick but not VR4 quick albeit. So less likely some teenager beat the crap out of. From what it looked like in it carfax it was a scottsdale, AZ car for its entire life which is 99% middle-age rich people. And its been clearly garage kept. Only thing ive had to do so far was (timing belt,water pump,oil pump, idler pully,hydraulic tensioner, Brake rotors and pads, IAC,cam seals and crank seals,clutch,slaver cylinder,throw out bearing) not because they broke but to ensure its a healthy engine.I can't complain i got essentially my dream car for 3,000$ with a little over 1,000$ to get it squared away. Also i can't prove it since i got this car through a small dealer but pretty sure that last owner was a woman. The reason i say this is the fragrance when you get in is this really sweet smell to it..which ive come across in a lot of female owned cars..and explains some of the neglect.

Hell most of the guts of my car and ALL the replacement parts I've had to get for my 94 stealth on them say mitsubishi. There was no design change, I can pull parts from a 94 3000 and put them in my stealth. Same goes for the eclipse/talon/lazer, all mitsubishi cars just rebadged.

Eventually it became a $1,000 option but after that it was dropped.

      No it is not, DSM reffers to the joint venture Chrysler/Mitsubishi (Daimond Star Motors) designed cars manufactured at the DSM plant in USA. All DSM's are made in Illinois USA. The 3000GT was not a joint venture, merely Mitsubishi manufacturing a car if its own design 100% in Japan, and Chrysler getting a rebadged version minus some features, imported from Mitsubishi in Japan. Think of it more like Mitsubishi selling the rights to Chrysler, to sell Mitsubishi's JDM car. So, not a DSM, a JDM :P and can you show me this plate that says DSM? Ive seen under the hoods of GTO's and 3000GT's never seen that plate.

    The thing that keeps you kinda "D Tier" for car reviews is a)your tacky intro music and car shots. have some self confidence, approach the car casually and talk about it. no dub step needed. your vids will age better. B) the camera is constantly on you, and you are not a commanding presence that can hold 8 minutes, maybe 2. since you're too lazy to film fly bys and maybe get a buddy to film some other angles you can cut to, I'd get the camera looking at the dash/road and off yourself. We KNOW it's you talking, since you are limited in what you can show, show us the hood view.

      We see tons of 3000GT's here in Japan, their home. Sports cars aren't being very popular these days over here but for some reason they're everywhere. IDKY but yeah a nice car lol

    Hey ThatDudeinBlue, i just went for a ride in my friend Ray's VR-4. OMG it is a super car!!! he must have some kind of power booster switch somewhere. It was the hardest acceleration that i have ever experience. while it is a daily driver until you mash the gas for a few seconds. It also has an amazing power band, from around 1800 rpm pulling hard to 7200 rpms. Everything looks stock but im sure it has bigger turbos and injectors... Here is what it can do with just a little work, 142mph in about 11seconds while just getting into 3rd gear and it has 6.. it handle with ease and is glue to the road with the right wheels. Ray is a down to earth great master mechanic of these amazing rides He is in process of rebuilding my motor for my 91 dodge stealth r/t tt with 100k orig miles. If you want to through a tune into your ride i would recommend his shop to you Ray Pampena Motorsports is known as one of the best tuners on the east coast and has traveled to Europe and all over the USA to tune.

    Back in the 90s in Orlando Florida, I used to drive my 1991 3000 GT SL up and down Orange Avenue, windows down, radio blasting, yelling at girls.. My friend in his 1995 Eclipse GS-T, My other friend in his Dodge Stealth RT/T. Back then the main cars were Supras, 5.0 Fox body mustangs, Acura NSX cars. Even to this day, the 3000GT 1991-1993 is still my favorite car.

    It was nice to see you review this car. For the longest I knew nothing about it except that it had a striking exterior. Lol kia optima joke, but anyways I do agree that it had a very exotic look to it

    I love this car. A friend and I drove it from Orlando Fla to San Diego Ca. I have to admit, it was one of the best things I have ever done.
    The only thing I wouldn't agree with you on is, you saying that the car is not aerodynamic.

    I owned a charcoal gray 1992 VR4 about 20 years ago. I bought it with about 40k miles on it and I put another 60k on it. The engine and AWD system were bulletproof. It was the tranny that started to give me problems around 90k miles. The 1-2 synchro started going bad and I really wasn't hard on it while I owned the car. I think the rear turbo was starting to go by the time I sold it (it was starting to whine) but 100k miles on a turbo isn't bad at all. If the Getrag sealed unit tranny wasn't going bad, I probably would have kept the car and upgraded the turbos. The engine internals, as many people below have said, were really well built. I was constantly fixing the gimmicky "active aero" system, too. I ended up replacing the adjustable dampers at around 60k miles and that was not cheap.
    I drove the car between Chicago and St. Louis very often and it was the best highway car that I've ever owned. The car was rock stable at speeds over 100 mph (I'm sure I'm well passed the statute of limitations!) and it was a joy to drive.
    BTW, these are not DSM cars. That used to refer to cars built at the Diamond Star Motors plant in IL: the Eclipse, Talon, and Laser. Yes, the 3000GT and Stealth were a joint venture between Mitsubishi and Chrysler, but they were built in Japan.
