Robert Fripp looking at Adrian Belew feedbacking his guitar: "So cool. How does he do that?" I love this line-up of King Crimson. I was a young 19 year old man and full of energy and optimism. Miss those days.
For some reason, this comment really got to me. I'm happy in life but I understand that feeling of losing the optimism. At some point, you realise that you're not immortal, that the people you most love are going to die and that you're never going to see them again. Tough stuff.

Belew always looks to be having the best time of anyone in the house - a born entertainer filled with infectious fun!
Belew seemed to have the most fun with the audience. Bruford seemed to have the most fun with his instrument.

Adrian is a really fun and kind guy. Fripp, on the other hand.
Belew definitely enjoys performing. I don't think you can say the same thing about Fripp.
I met him last year when he was touring with Todd Rundgren for the David Bowie TRibute. I had a meet and greet and Todd laughed at me because I bowed down to Adrian. Todd knows I have great taste in music. I have a few really good photos of that amazing night. Adrian came in the bar at the hotel and wanted a White Russian. I guess they couldn't make him one. The next time I see him, I'm bringing him a huge thermos full. 🤪
Not only is Adian Belew an amazing guitar player but he also has a great unique voice.
And a really nice guy too
What he did with kg and Bowie is top music. Very innovative but melodic

Astute observation. And only one a tuned-in musician would recognize. It's no easy feat to direct a band as skillfully as Fripp does so ostensibly effortlessly. Fripp appears to be playing mechanically, but his ears are finely tuned to listen for the slightest variation of when to play a microsecond ahead or behind the beat. Not an easy thing for even highly skilled musicians to do.
You're a perceptive man with great taste in music.

Truly one of the greatest to ever live
I am a Rush fan but also listen to other music including king Crimson with bruford in the band. Anyways Neil Peart is my number 1 drummer but Bruford comes number 2.( yes I have listened to bruford ( solo) and earthworks too). Yes Fripp, wetton, cross, below and Levin are also great too.

This is: the perfect concert with the perfect musicians and the perfect songs and arrangements. PERIOD! My favourite KC period of all!
I've always admired the intense cooperation (and stamina) for playing rhythmic meshes like this. Fripp is very precise at playing patterns over a long period, as is Bruford.
Adrian Belew has this very playful and joyful stage presence while at the same time appearing to be slightly crazy. Quiet rare for a rock musician. I guess he has a great sense of nonsense humour, too.

I missed Adrian Belew's wild and exciting presence on the stage when I saw them on September 14, 2019.
The current singer murdered a few songs that Adrian owned.
I really was disappointed that neither Belew or Bruford were on this 50th anniversary tour.
Still loved the show.

@@katherinehunter9526 same fir me except 2017, but I was lucky enough to see him in a tiny venue in Vancouver a few years before with the E3 lineup. Amazing up close experience, a truly nice guy.
Considering he played with Bowie, Zappa, and Talking Heads, helped transform King Crimson into a new wave/prog rock hybrid, released a solo album entitled "Lone Rhino", and later formed a band called The Bears, I would say your assessment of his humor and zany antics is spot on.
I mean, he WAS part of Frank Zappa's band for a while. You got to have a sense of humor to play with Frank.
I was present at the Spring '82 stop at Toad's Place (New Haven, CT, USA) and stood, leaning on the stage right in front of these artists. How I wish I could replay that performance. Each musician had their own energy to enjoy with their music. Fripp playing "scientific guitar" while making otherworldly sounds in a tux is mind-blowing. Ah, the 80s...it shall never return, but thank God for RUclips!

This line up was devastating.... 4 masters of their craft. I was lucky enough to see line up 3 times. 1981, 82, 84. All in Philadelphia, Pa.

I saw this act live, in Seattle during 1984. It was a wonderful night with many friends, great music, and so much playfulness and interconnection between performers and audience.

I just saw King Crimson on their 50th anniversary tour in Toronto and it was good but I found myself missing Belew and Bruford for sure.
Hard to say if Fripp will ever bring them back.

The year that this was recorded was when a wonderful drummer friend sat me down in his bedroom, a bedroom full of worn out drum heads, cracked sticks, and milk creates filled with albums. They played me In the Court of the Crimson King. I had only been listening to bands like Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Rush, and Led Zep before this moment. What an awakening it was to hear these exceptionally creative musical artists. 🌸🎶

I recall seeing/hearing this version of KC at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. Me and my friend Bob got their early and got spots standing right in front of the electric drums. We were both SO blown away...we must have looked totally googley-eyed...one amazing moment after another trying to take as much in as possible...sometimes not being sure who to watch even though familiar with material. What a great band, what a great evening. The SOUND on this video is REALLY GOOD too, which is so NICE, for a CHANGE. Thanks ALL!!

Best of all incarnations of King Crimson.
They were great. A tossup with the Wetton/Cross lineup imo, but the Belew/Levin lineup really expanded the musical horizons that surround King Crimson moreso than any other permeation of the band.

Pound for pound, this is the best Crimson lineup. Fripp put together a dream team in Bruford, Belew and Levin. I enjoy the other lineups for different reasons. But this lineup is perfect. there isn't anything they can't do.
+Kirk Slater Pound for pound? There's a lot of weight being thrown around up on that stage in this era, sure. But truly pound for pound has to go to Red-era trio.
I guess it's a hard call. Every lineup is rather substantial. But for me, this lineup is the most distinct tone while providing a wildly adventurous attitude. I'm a pretty big Crimson fan, so I couldn't really take a firm stance against any other opinion. I love the Red era too. I've got and enjoy all the albums. Haha

Wow. Sheltering Sky is on a whole nother level live. It never really spoke to me until seeing this amazing video. What a great upload. This album and Discipline have a special place for me. Musicianship in spades.
So glad Fripp decamped to NYC and hung out with the the new wavers. That move set in motion something very special: this sublime music. Turns out that the key to 'progressive rock' was to leave 'prog rock' behind. ✌️

@@enkibumbu Yeah, possibly. But Adrian's an approachable guy, and is genuine in conversation. He played the club I worked at a few times in the 80s, and had the chance to speak with him then. Byrne, on the other hand, just seems like an actor to me.

@@Romany1111 I think you're both right. Seems like Adrian expanded on what could be done after meeting Byrne - but he was also young so it could be growing more confident. Byrne was acting 100%. When you see videos of him before he was famous or in the last 10 years as his fame dimmed you see a man different from the "autistic and low self monitoring" man he played to the hilt.
Tony Levin is a long-time acquaintance of mine, and he's as genuine a person as you'll ever meet. We've been on the same stage together, playing bass, and he's light-years ahead of everyone on that instrument. He's doing things that other bassists haven't even thought of. We ran into each other several years ago, and he asked me if I was still playing bass. When I told him "No", he asked why. I told him "I've seen you and that's as good as it gets."
Really? My impression was not positive when he was doing a signing and greeting fans right after a show several years ago. Gave him the booklet for Peter Gabriel's Plays Live album (my favorite Levin performance). He looked at it and arrogantly said, "I don't even know what this IS." When he realized what it was, he gave a half hearted "Oh" Quite rude and unfriendly. I wished I hadn't bothered. Very disappointing.
@@chrisknowlton9460 sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I've never known an unkind moment with Tony. I have no excuse, but I guess I'd just chalk it up to a bad day. We all have them. He's always been great to me and our paths cross on a pretty irregular basis. Frankly, I'm surprised he's remembered me. I hope you might give him another chance and for now, just enjoy his talent.
Wow- I always imagined him as just the kindest and most understated guy, and it sounds like he is. I’m jealous that you are pals with him, though I’m sure that I’d probably find it overwhelming to be on a couch sharing a convo with him as well!!
Hi@@tunguskalumberjack9987thanks for the kind words. While Tony and I are acquainted, please don't think that we're great pals, sitting around shooting the breeze. He knows me when we meet, but we don't meet very often. I did get to chat with him at a local appearance in January, but with his schedule, meetings are few and far between. What I can tell you, is that he's very down-to-earth and approachable. I've seen some people complain that he blew them off, but I don't know the circumstances of the meeting, so I can't address them. I've always found him to be friendly (and believe it or not, a bit shy) and happy. I don't have to tell you about his talent, that always shines through. I don't know where you live, but if it's in the eastern U.S., watch for Tony and his brother Pete to appear in a little quartet called "The Levin Brothers". They usually play small venues with an intimate audience. It's more jazz/new age jazz-oriented and they're great. They even throw in "Sleepless" from King Crimson. They're very wide-ranged and enjoyable. The best part is that they tour in a van, just to keep themselves in touch with their past. So I hope I didn't give the wrong impression about our friendship. He's a great guy and a great talent and I try to see him whenever he's appearing near me. Best wishes and enjoy the music.

I’ve had people misunderstand a passing reference to someone before as meaning more than I had intended, so I completely understand where you’re coming from. Helping Street Dogs in Mexico I’m in total agreement! But I go through musical phases too, and sometimes I’ll vote for another 40 minutes by someone else. When it’s this good though, it keeps coming back- I’m so glad that I came across this- it’s brilliant, and I listen to it at least twice a week!
Saw them a month before, in Italy. "Supporting act"were Roxy Music on their last tour. An unforgettable concert.
i was there, in Reggio Emilia, Campovolo, 31/8/82, Concert even better of this: four great musicians ! But as singer i preferred Lake, Boz or Wetton.(all three dead : R.I.P. ) Belew doesn't have a great voice.

Crimson in this particular incarnation/lineup at this time can be considered one of THE most influential musical forces ever.....everyone worth anything will claim its influence. Also, the fact that this vid has garnered a mere 200k views since 2015 supported by 400 or so comments is PERFECT......these numbers make righteous sense, when compared to what's considered music, these days,
One of my favorite bands; fantastic lineup, incredible blend of unusual, beautiful sounds, and a totally fresh approach to song writing. Everything about this band was absolutely fantastic.
Best concert ever saw in Detroit , Neal and Jack and me, is so good , I repeat myself when I’m in distress
Sometimes the right thing comes along and lifts you up and out. I've watched just the Indiscipline track from this over and over but today saw something that I can't unsee and finding this, Intense Bow Tie, Happy Pink Suit, Bouncy Bald Guy and Cheerful Surfer Drummer (yes, yes I know, disrespectful, trust me, I'm not) is replacing that image. It feels so good it aches right along with the sadness. Thank you Robert, Tony, Bill and Adrian.

What year was that? I live near Akron and I have never had the pleasure of seeing King Crimson LIVE. My brother did though. I'm so in love with this band especially because of Adrian Belew. And Tony and Robert and Bill. Damn. This doesn't get any better.

I love this version of King Crimson the best so far. I saw them on this past 50th anniversary tour in Toronto.

Configuration of the band.
It could be that during that period of my life, I was in the best relationship I'd ever been in.
But we fell apart because I couldn't get into doing body piercing to myself to make my boyfriend happy.
So I had to let him go to follow his passion.
It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make.

Anyway I loved that Three of a perfect pair configuration of King Crimson.
There are a few tunes that Adrian Belew belts out like no one else can.
But having said that, King Crimson will always be my very favorite band and I completely enjoyed their 50th anniversary concert.
They are the only band I have ever paid to see in concert over and over again and will until I die.

I think you actually made the right decision though, because you should have never HAD to make that choice! If your boyfriend REALLYYYYY loved you, he would have loved you just the same, piercings or not.. Yes, I definitely think the best version of Crimson was this period and quartet lineup of Belew, Bruford, Levin and Fripp. BTW, I am a professional jazz bassist based in NYC. I loved that Three of a Perfect Pair tour from back in the 80's.
I even caught a bus and followed the band after seeing them preform in Toronto one night then over to Camp Fortune Quebec to see them their second second night in Canada.
I must say the gig in Quebec was a longer show and if you can imagine this even better than the Toronto show. I was so glad I went.
Most folks follow the Grateful Dead like that but I like their music but not enough to follow them.
King Crimson is light years ahead of them and most bands.

Saw this tour Live in '83 and Waiting Man was By Far the most Impressive tune. LOVE!!!!!!!!
