That was a bold choice but a good one . His explosive, out there style clashes with the other supertechnical guys, but it works.. Discipline is a fantastic record.

I always wanted to see KC, I was only 6 when this concert was filmed. I discovered them when they reformed as the deadly double trio and released Thrak, what a sonic experience!!! Being a drummer I had to meet Bruford, it just so happened that in 2007 he was giving limited engagement drum tutorials , met him in Toronto, what an absolute humble genius. How he spoke of percussion only elevated my playing until I met Danny a year later in a small bar in Detroit touring with Volto! One would not think that he would let just anyone sit next to him while he had his arms dipped in a bucket of ice water, we talked everything from the love of Lamborghinis, ( he had one) to UFO’s , basketball , to the need to stay humble. People may talk negatively about Tool, but they are without a doubt the greatest rock band of all time.
Saw the Disciplin tour 2 times. So much talent. Superb. The Old Waldorf in San Francisco. Anybody else see those shows? How fabulous. One of my top musical memories for sure. Im 70 now, & have treasured those special memories always. Adrian trying to take my hat between shows. chasing me all thru the club, how fun... 😊
Japanese to English via Google translate: Around the time of the Three of Perfect Tour, a laser disc was also released and I bought it. And of course I went to the Japan performance!!
Where in the fuck was I when this all went down. I knew Belew from Zappa, Bowie and Talking Heads but I totally missed KC. Damn, what a perfect blend of fluent players. As close as one gets to perfection. Then I heard Heartbeat and remembered the song. I was sure this was a cover and searched for the original artist. It came back to King Crimson. Belew is so good on guitar I forget he had the chops to front a band vocally. What an amazing talent. Thanks so much for this video. I'm trying to find a time machine so I can to back and see this live.
man, when adrian does his solos in lark's tongues in apsic pt2, you can hear a new genre of music emerge. truly influential to many modern prog rock bands.
Everyone I know who saw this quartet in this era, live -- they all talked about the absolute zoo of innovative guitar sounds at the concert. Most also mentioned Fripp on his stool, vs Belew all animated.
KC, the only Rock Band who had evolve on the top from 69 to 74 again on the top in 81-83 and again in 95 and again in 00 or 03 even in 08 and more in 17 - 20 and still alive in 22 KC for ever ! thank you Rob and all the others....
I keep coming back to comment, as this is just such a wonderful gift to us. I remember the excitement when KC came back on the scene in the '80s. I was a younger fan, having discovered ITCOCK and following works during the hiatus, and was so stoked to get to be part of the initial fandom of this new incarnation. As I watch this performance it comes back how RF, then 36, seemed to me so much the elder rock statesman but now looks so young to my eyes that his genius seems almost precocious. Time is alternatively relative, fixed, and illusory, all in the same moment. This is part of the power of music.
One of the greatest bands ever. When I saw them live, I never imagined they would only be together for few more years. Thanks for posting this incredible performance 🙏
I saw this concert in NYC small engagement at The Savoy. Of course I was in love with Bruford, drummers...I regress. Still have the album listened to regularly but this concert so well preserved takes me to close Nirvana. Much Gratitude.
I was there after 24 hours of travelling from normandy....and just after them Roxy Music....you imagine....!!! Incredible in the superbe city of Frejus....just by the sea...we were young and the people were beautiful....Just before king arrived on stage a big plane flies over the Roman stadium...with big reactor sound... and just after they came in...The ticket price, i still have it....100fr....15 euros!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....Another time, another world.....another planet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am going to the king crimson tour in October this year👍 My sweet brother bought tickets for us to together! I loved King Crimson way back when…. But never saw them perform live. Very excited to attend Beat at Keswick theatre in Glenside, PA. Stay healthy and safe and wishing you success with this tour😊😊
This is the best concert of the Fripp, Belew, Levin, and Bruford era. Belew had just arrived in KG and had that unbridled energy that Fripp most likely tamped down later.
Fripp always wrote & played for “Head, Heart & Hips”… I honestly don’t believe Bobby Fripp “tamped” any one's energy and joy in playing in Crimson…I was lucky enough to see Adrian Belew when rehearsing he was with Talking Heads’ initial “full band” line-up. I was only a few feet and able see how intense and yes, joyful while the he was playing. Granted it’s hard to not have fun playing music like the “Head’s” back then, but it was obvious he was in heaven playing their music. Belew’s next gig was Crimson which judging from this concert, and the one I was able to see, that joy was continued with Fripp, Bruford & Levin. Listen to the intensity that Levin & Bruford were bringing, how could you note be ecstaticplaying in that group. Yes, Fripp required note-perfect playing, but at the same time an intensity that honestly, I don’t believe any other group surpassed…
Allowed out of the cage for "Indiscipline," reined in otherwise. I mean, he plays from a freakin' stool, our man Fripp. In a 3 pc suit oftentimes. I think he'd prefer they all follow suit, no pun intended. If a musician is interesting otherwise, he seems to suffer their idiosyncracies to a small extent. Odd, to me, as pre-Belew/Levin, the entire catalog seems a paean to idiosyncracies. I guess it's a matter of type/degree.
I saw them in ft worth Texas it was amazing and unforgettable. Levin’s rhythm, Fripp’s genius and Belew’s joy are unmatched. I’m glad to have experienced it live.
I was in college in the mid eighties and I can’t even guess how many times my friends and I, stoned out of minds, must have watched this. This is my first time watching it again in well over a decade. My returning face is smiling.
60 here… saw KC around ‘84, give or take a year, at pier 84 in NYC… THE tightest band I have ever heard live, bar none! And not just in a given genre, though there have been some jazz gigs that come close (Cecil Taylor and max roach at Columbia University around 2000-2001!)…
I was at that concert, all I remember is my mind being blown, such a fan of Tony Levin and bill Bruford. Became a big fan of crimson after that show. I saw another great show at the bottom line in the 2000s with Levin and Bruford in a group called extremities sat about six feet away from stage, I met them afterwards and was dumbfounded I didn't even know what to say to them except that I was just a great fan of them. The night I'll never forget.
Nice to see this on the official site after all the versions of this that had been uploaded and eventually struck down by the publisher. If you build it, they will come.
I saw KC Nov 22 1981 at the UC San Diego gym. Somehow scraped the $7.50 together for a gen admin ticket, walked over from the dorm. No problem getting to the front on Fripp’s side, close enough to touch his guitar (I didn’t). I still haven’t emotionally recovered.
Shite Time traveling>back to 23 &24 November 1981 West Hollywood California destination the Roxy on Sunset Blvd to see my beloved King Crimson. A Righteous Cheers! For this sweet sweet archive 💯
Absolutely astounded. Saw Belew and Levin just this past Tuesday (2024-10-22) along with Steve Vai (in place of Fripp) and Danny Carey (in place of Bruford) on their BEAT tour and I swear to you they sounded JUST LIKE THIS!! It was glorious and fantastic!! If you love this era of King Crimson you owe it to yourself to go see BEAT - there are still quite a few shows left on the tour!
tony levin is a delightful bald headed madman playing bass and ostinato parts at the same time! bruford is always impeccable and inspired as a drummer, and i have to say i just love adrian's voice, it's so emotional and beautiful. and his guitar playing is a delightful insane contrast of wild animal emotion, which fits the musical savannas of this band's period of music. i think it's peak pop music
"The Sheltering" (13:54) : Love that reed sound on Robert's guitar during. Sounds like a balloon exhaling though a tiny aperture. The sound Adrian is making with his guitar at 16:54 is crazy good. This song sounds like something from "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" by David Byrne and Brian Eno (highly recommended).
@@BroonParker It was no secret among musicians in that late 70s early 80s time that experimentation with sounds, patterns, images from Asia & Africa was ongoing. Fripp & Summers made "I Advance Masked" it wasn't just Eno & Byrne with MLITBOG. I don't think anyone for a minute would imagine Adrian Belew was not influenced by David Byrne in stage presence and singing style, to various extents, and probably also by Zappa and those in the Mothers when he was there. That's just how it goes with influences. Apart from influence, I hear no aping between the two, maybe an indirect dialogue.
Not to mention the bassist managing to use his bass as a percussion instrument much of the time as well. KC was always way ahead of the curve… and for folks who are musicians they are amazing inspirations to watch / listen to.
Forever listenable, it's so complex and interesting, and musical. If you like this sort of music, that is. I know a few who find it just noise, but that's how it goes. Top 40 satisfies such folks.
Damn, the way Belew bends the neck against the body… you gotta wonder how many strats he went through per tour in those days! Do that enough and they won’t hold a tune any more! Damn.
@@Dramalius According to Trey Gunn, King Crimson is a rock band, just one with a very unique vocabulary. (I read an interview once with him where he stated something like that.)
This is just freakin' awesome! I'm so glad I've gotten to see them live so many times. This is a great testiment of their genius. I will watch this over and over again. THANKS ROBERT!
I've been a huge KC fan since this incarnation (saw a live show on PBS and never looked back), but never saw them live until my beautiful wife surprised me with tickets last year (?). Oh, to have seen this line up!
Back in the mid-80's I remember discovering this unassuming VHS tape in a tiny local video store in Portland OR. Ended up renting it several times to re-watch. Finally hooked up the audio output through my stereo system so I could rip the audio to a cassette tape which I then wore out in the car. So these particular performances have a special resonance for me.
Was fortunate to have caught this gig when passing through Frejus with schoolmates on a South of France tour. KC supported Roxy Music. Beautiful balmy evening in a Roman amphitheatre. Magical times.
Well Guess what?? That 1970s KC got the Big Band Mashup a few years back. Except Adrian Belew is Not Singing his own song lyrics. Seems that Brian Setzer was never asked to front Fripps new band
hey Fripp , i want to apologize about my making jokes about you sitting on stage. i do sincerely think and always have , cause i know you since my teens back in 1975, that you are a great musician.take care, Vianney.

I really wonder what prompted DGM to gift us this; I'm grateful for the radical feelings of the Beat tour's sounds being put here. One day I'll get the On (& Off) The Road box for the More Neal & Jack & Me version.
@@submandave1125 which is funny - my first exposure to KC was from tape a co-worker slipped me with Discipline and Beat on it in the early eighties, telling me that he thought that I'd enjoy it. As my situation improved, I ended up with the then-catalogue on vinyl and I bought it again on CD.
@@AndrewBeals There's definitely a balance between free material driving future purchases (get you hooked with the first hit, like any good pusher) and callous disregard for IP. Can't imagine even RF calling the cops on someone sharing a cassette with a friend, but that's expressly not what digital sharing is, especially in the social media age.
I am beside myself with how great this looked …and sounded! Seeing this entire film was a great gift this Friday. Thank you DGM and kudos to the mastering!

Ahead of anyone else when i heard one of their first live gigs, an art-school music festival, summer 1969 at Goldsmiths Art College in SE London, the first full on prog rock anyone had heard, all the musicians onsite infront of the stage looking awesteuck as we heard the 21st Century Schizoid Man for the first time. Then i heard the Double trio version at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd in LA, about 1999, this lineup plus Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotti, unbelievably intense and powerful in a room with a perfect acoustic design and PA combination. Even further ahead of anyone else than they were in 1969. Two of the dozen most amazing gigs of my lifetime have been King Crimson. Sheltering Sky is a beautiful combination of powerful intensity and light touch gentleness, really unique in the world of modern music-- and they played it at the House of Blues gig.

Watching this show on DVD was the beginning of my KC journey.... So glad it's going to be available for everyone!! 💗🙌🏽
me too, starting here and 73 lineup at same time
Ikr, I have the DVD, though it's in storage unable to watch it, thank goodness for this!
Grownup Men creating Beauty ❤ Brings Hope 🙏 Make Music, not War 💮🌸🏵 Amazing gig btw 🤩
スリーオブアパーフェクトツアーの頃でレーザーディスクも発売され買って見ました。そして日本公演にももちろん行きました‼️
Go see Beat this year. Belew and Levin with Danny Carey and Steve Vai doing this era. It's the closest you'll ever get to this era of Crimson now.
I find amazing that everytime they get into the studio the played and recorded, like a live gig. Rick Beato's interview is amazing.
Agreed! And how I wish Fripp would sit down with Rick...probably never happen but one can dream 😅
man, when adrian does his solos in lark's tongues in apsic pt2, you can hear a new genre of music emerge. truly influential to many modern prog rock bands.
It’s anthemic!
Everyone I know who saw this quartet in this era, live -- they all talked about the absolute zoo of innovative guitar sounds at the concert. Most also mentioned Fripp on his stool, vs Belew all animated.
KC, the only Rock Band who had evolve
on the top from 69 to 74
again on the top in 81-83
and again in 95
and again in 00 or 03 even in 08
and more in 17 - 20
and still alive in 22
KC for ever !
thank you Rob and all the others....
In the ole days there was no Crimson on RUclips (constantly removed). Now there's a full show!!
Fripp was policing constantly, but I think he's decided he's retired now.
This is part of the power of music.
beautiful words!
Yours are wise and precise words.
That Frejus show is a gem.
Timeless performance, perfectly captured! Things that make life worth living for. In other words, art
This is the best concert of the Fripp, Belew, Levin, and Bruford era. Belew had just arrived in KG and had that unbridled energy that Fripp most likely tamped down later.
I think Japan was their best concert.
Great live performance by this iconic progressive fusion band, love me some Crimson.
Love the way Adrian Belew looks around for seagulls at 11:25
I freakin' love King Crimson with Adrian Belew.
I saw them in ft worth Texas it was amazing and unforgettable. Levin’s rhythm, Fripp’s genius and Belew’s joy are unmatched. I’m glad to have experienced it live.
So what you’re saying is you don’t like Bruford?
Lol. I’m kidding, obviously. Cheers!
This was my favorite lineup of this band.
Bejesus....thank you Tim and Scott for turning me onto King Crimson so long ago...one of my favorite bands of all time!
I was in college in the mid eighties and I can’t even guess how many times my friends and I, stoned out of minds, must have watched this.
This is my first time watching it again in well over a decade.
My returning face is smiling.
Even though I wasn’t alive in the 80s, my 2017 college experience closely aligns with yours, ha ha. There’s truly nothing quite like this concert.
With an illegal smile!

. . .when King Crimson moved from being a band to a musical ensemble . . . timeless perfection, still completely relevant today!
I still love it as much in 2023, thank you for your channel !
I won't say this is the best lineup, because literally every lineup is amazing, but this is incredible.
Musica non convenzionale, estremamente godibile eseguita alla perfezione , musicisti superbi , "assemblati" da quel genio di Robert Fripp, impagabile!
Nice to see this on the official site after all the versions of this that had been uploaded and eventually struck down by the publisher. If you build it, they will come.
Thank you. Watching from Alaska.
I remember because I was alive then.
🕊
Hey there, Erp. I'm still here! (lol) Just listening to this again after a spell.
I have always loved this show, and to have it in this quality and presentation is just too good to be true. Thanks, Robert.
40 лет слушаю,"кримсон" на всегда!!!
I saw KC Nov 22 1981 at the UC San Diego gym. Somehow scraped the $7.50 together for a gen admin ticket, walked over from the dorm. No problem getting to the front on Fripp’s side, close enough to touch his guitar (I didn’t). I still haven’t emotionally recovered.
so many years listening to this live show and finally fripp delivers it in a better quality. ty as always sir
How can Bruford and Belew keep playing the same part over and over again and not mess up.?
Watched this on late night BBC2-introduced by Annie Nightingale. Recorded it onto Betamax and played it endlessly.
Me pongo de pie ante estos maestro ,de una realidad que muy pocos saben la música que crean, son unos Maestros Maestros viva El Rey Carmesí 👏
tony levin is a delightful bald headed madman playing bass and ostinato parts at the same time! bruford is always impeccable and inspired as a drummer, and i have to say i just love adrian's voice, it's so emotional and beautiful. and his guitar playing is a delightful insane contrast of wild animal emotion, which fits the musical savannas of this band's period of music. i think it's peak pop music
Dream come true show. So many thanks for letting us see. 🕊️
Very close to this indeed. A bit too close for me.
Talking Heads is in the same class.
Got to be my favourite live performance of the Eighties!...So good it's available to enjoy anytime! We are lucky! Fresh, arty and fun every time!
I fortunate enough to see these pilars of distinction. Along with Yes, one of the best concerts I have ever seen
Wow, great show. I saw the Discipline tour but this was just fantastic, totally progressive and nicely produced.
Belew and his friends are truly geniuses. Very technical, enchanting music, so full of emotions. What an achievement! I will never get enough of it.
Forever listenable, it's so complex and interesting, and musical. If you like this sort of music, that is. I know a few who find it just noise, but that's how it goes. Top 40 satisfies such folks.
Fripp and his friends
Well this is a nice surprise! ive been listening to king crimson everyday on my way to school
That's been me for 2 years, only love them more and more
Damn, the way Belew bends the neck against the body… you gotta wonder how many strats he went through per tour in those days! Do that enough and they won’t hold a tune any more! Damn.
Pound for pound, 1980s Crimson is the most talented rock band ever.
Totaly
mmh King Crimson is not exactly rock... King Crimson is just King Crimson, it's unique
Senza il minimo dubbio
@@Dramalius According to Trey Gunn, King Crimson is a rock band, just one with a very unique vocabulary. (I read an interview once with him where he stated something like that.)
@@davel7791 Sounds more like Magma. But still, probably as good a description as any.
King Crimson の奏でる全ての音が愛おしい
This is just freakin' awesome! I'm so glad I've gotten to see them live so many times. This is a great testiment of their genius. I will watch this over and over again. THANKS ROBERT!
I've been a huge KC fan since this incarnation (saw a live show on PBS and never looked back), but never saw them live until my beautiful wife surprised me with tickets last year (?). Oh, to have seen this line up!
I saw this tour !!!! Discipline unBeatable!!! 4 gifted musicians and the rest...talk to the wind!!!
That solo on Neil and Jack and Me was incredible.
But the camera was not focusing on it. I'm fuming 😂
Frippertronics 😊
Adrian's solo or Robert's solo?
Back in the mid-80's I remember discovering this unassuming VHS tape in a tiny local video store in Portland OR. Ended up renting it several times to re-watch. Finally hooked up the audio output through my stereo system so I could rip the audio to a cassette tape which I then wore out in the car. So these particular performances have a special resonance for me.
Was fortunate to have caught this gig when passing through Frejus with schoolmates on a South of France tour. KC supported Roxy Music. Beautiful balmy evening in a Roman amphitheatre. Magical times.
Without Adrian Belew, King Crimson would have sadly disappeared in the 70s.
Well Guess what?? That 1970s KC got the Big Band Mashup a few years back. Except Adrian Belew is Not Singing his own song lyrics. Seems that Brian Setzer was never asked to front Fripps new band
hey Fripp , i want to apologize about my making jokes about you sitting on stage.
i do sincerely think and always have , cause i know you since my teens back in 1975, that
you are a great musician.take care, Vianney.
Is that a 12 string on "Waiting Man"? Omg beautiful!!!!
What a great DVD/VHS this was. I really hope for the other part with Live in Japan.
Also I'd love to see Grey whistle test finally uploaded on here, or maybe even Rich tapestry of life.
Thanks for the uploads.
they remain consistent.
they remain consistent...
I am always mesmerized by these four musicians when they play together.
more than 50 years one of my favorites, special the opening and Heartbeat and all the singing and go one
I really wonder what prompted DGM to gift us this; I'm grateful for the radical feelings of the Beat tour's sounds being put here. One day I'll get the On (& Off) The Road box for the More Neal & Jack & Me version.
haha radical
Robert often seems to me quite generous with his music; he just vehemently opposes others being generous with his music.
How can you top the version of NAJAM performed here? That wimhurst Fripp solo blew my lid clean off.
I am beside myself with how great this looked …and sounded! Seeing this entire film was a great gift this Friday. Thank you DGM and kudos to the mastering!
I love late 70s/early 80s Crimson. Three of a perfect pair is a fundamental album for me.
I’ve had quite a break from this KC lineup.
Very refreshing.
Thanks for putting this up, one of my fave VHS tapes of all time.
Legitimately the best performance from this incarnation of the band.
Every incarnation was the best.

Todas las etapas de King Crimson son Geniales. La mejor de todas las Bandas después de los Fuera de concurso, The Beatles
Mr. Fripp, please try to maintain some decorum during The Sheltering Sky. Moving your torso a few inches to and fro is quite unbecoming.
Benedetto Signore, grazie per i KC! Ma quanto spaccava questa formazione? 😮 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ 🙏
Thanks for posting. I was a huge stoner fan back in college in the 80's, during the Discipline/Beat era, and caught one of your concerts. This brings me back. Sounds great. I bet you could fill an arena in Austin or Houston. Hope you make a stop in Texas someday.
Эдриан Белью --- блистательный выдающийся гитарист и вокалист. Гениальная музыка.
They played on the Goldsmith campus? Woah. Studied there a semester many years later but had no idea.
The DMG video of indiscipline played in Mexico city had the comments turned off. I'd guess there's an interesting story behind that.
