I went to school with Berit. I didn't know her very well but we had mutual friends & spoke a few times. She was always very sweet. Many people in my class helped with searching for her & some of my friends sang at her funeral. It was so devasting to the community. To this day, every so often I will go to the cemetery to pay my respects to her.

Such a sad, haunting story. It's good the family setup a scholarship for aspiring young musicians in ber memory. I'm a Wisconsin native and Berit's name will never be forgotten here. My heartfelt sympathy to her parents and family. What a tragic waste. Beautiful, talented young girl on the brink of a promising future. Savor each day. You never know what evil lurks around the corner.

We have the Berit beck award at case highschool for seniors in music. It’s a scholarship for who ever wins at the senior recital that night. When i graduated in 2016 at Case, her parents attended and had attended every year. Sweet sweet people. Bless them and all the students they have graced with the scholarship. Her picture is still in our band room.

She reported it to police and the police never followed up on it.

This is exactly why it is so important for victims' families, as well as the media, to keep bringing attention to cold casese and advocating for a continued investigation. There are SO many stories of cases with DNA or fingerprint evidence that were simply never entered into a database or even tested as technology improved. So many of these cases could have been solved 30+ years before they were if police had only given it the least bit of attention.

@@Lee-n2n1tWrong. It depends on the circumstances, but LE can speak with minor witnesses and victims without parental consent. In Dassey's case, not only did his mom give her consent to let him talk to police without a parent or lawyer present, but he was considered a witness until he began making incriminating statements. She decided to go outside and smoke a cigarette while her minor son spoke to the police.

The “Justice” system once again looking after the Guilty more than the victim, as usual a woman. He gets to live his idea and hers is ended so soon. I am so sorry for this victim and her family. Juries should be made of professionals, like nurses etc. Too often the juries just don’t get it. Or choose the jurists in a different way. I know you can have people who are smart without degrees, but all you need is one person who likes to go against the grain and the trial is left unresolved.

12:18 if Brantner was arrested the year prior those latent prints were never entered into AFIS at all. Since his prints were on file they would've gotten an immediate hit and had access to fresh evidence. This guy was free for decades merely because someone dropped the ball. The jury got it right, as sad as it is. Proving that he touched some things in the van doesn't at all prove that he committed the murder. And I have no idea how you could possibly think a case can be made for lying in wait here. The jury is far smarter than you. First degree reckless homicide = voluntary manslaughter.
