I really do wish I had the desire to join the French Foriegn Legion back when I got out of High School in the 70's. I had 4 years of French and was in incredible physical shape and long distance runner. Love your show ! I did 20 years in the US Army Armor and Armored Cavalry.

Nothing in the military was as tough to deal with as the cold. When there's nowhere warm, it's miserable and demoralizing. Felt like our sleeping bags were just for show. Lucky to get an hour. Thank you for reminding me that I'm fortunate to be here and not in a WW2 reenactment.

Looking forward to your video of your leaving ceremony back at Aubange, when you got your CBC from the Colonel. Itll be good to hear how you felt having pushed through all the Legion BS and finally walking back out the gates of Aubange knowing you'd got the job done despite all the BS the Legion chucked at you.

January 1990 at Field Artillery Officer Basic Course Fort Sill, OK. We were calling for fire at midnight atop "Block House on Signal Mountain" Ambient air temp 17F with a 25-knot gusting wind on the mountain top. The wind chill made it feel more like -17F as the wind cut right through our uniforms. I was standing by a 5-ton truck loaded with a bunch of miserable Lieutenants huddled in the back when I heard a lone miserable voice through chattering teeth say "I'll never be warm again!" I think that is the coldest I have ever been. No gortex just the old cotton M65 and no liner. I grew up in the Northeast and thought I knew cold. I can almost feel that day in your story!

Bro the one time we went to a field problem that ever got canceled was at Fort Sill it literally felt like the day after tomorrow it started out a real pleasant evening when we got to the field site and then it went South with the wind picking up and then flurries and then a tornado force winds they had tents falling down breaking guys arms they had tents falling down breaking people's collar bones when we woke up that morning there was icicles hanging off the bottoms of some of the cots of the people who slept by the edges of the tent the water had splashed up from the tent flapping in the wind and soak the bottom of the cots so there was icecikles hanging down.
About half of the units entire trucks got left in that mud bowl we had to come back like 3 or 4 days later when they had dried out with a wrecker.

I went to the Farm back in July of 1998, and I guess it wasn't very cold. Maybe around 12 to 15 C or hotter. Coming from the US Army, I thought it was quite nice compared to being in any post in the American South, because at least it wasn't humid. I had a leg up on the others in that I was one of the few guys in my class that spoke fluent French, because my great-grandfather was French and was at Verdun in the First World War (that dude was hardcore), and I wanted to speak the language when I was in high school. Not that the instructors gave me any slack for it, or sympathy or anything, but I think they were watching what they said around me in casual conversation, believing I might tell on them.
Another leg I had up on the others was that I was a former soldier, but I wasn't combat arms, but combat support. I was Aviation. That being said, I knew how to handle a weapon, how to basically do drill and ceremony, and all that stuff. I liked the way the Legion trains folks. I don't know what it was back when you went, but you would do something over and over and over and over and over and over again until you got it right. First aid and CPR was different than what I was taught in the Army, but I guess they change stuff every so often (tourniquets, for instance).
My biggest hang-up was swearing in English. I normally always spoke French all the time, but I can't just say Merde or Putain de Merde or whatever for me to express myself! And, of course, comes the punishment for that. Once, when I was at 1er REC, a buddy accidentally dropped a 102mm round on my foot, and broke two of my toes (still had to operate the AMX-10, of course), and even so, my sergeant made me do push-ups for all the foul English words coming out of my mouth. Good times.

I had second thoughts at ft benning with no blanks being told to yell bang bang forgetting they do not trust new trainees with live ammunition for a reason. A cadre was killed the class after mine on a live fire range. He got pissed at the trainee trying to clear a jam on a timed range requiring fire and maneuver up hill and when he pulled the rifle barrel the weapon killed him. The drill sergeant’s jumped the private and beat his ass. His buddy had to explain to them what happened and there was a huge investigation over it. A friend of mine was there. Things in the military are done for a reason. Not always favorable to the new privates.

How was your french speaking battle buddy? Isn’t everyone paired up with someone who understands french and speaks your home language, if possible? I can imagine that being hit or miss. Making some Irish/English friends or paired up with a Romanian pervert, either way, looking forward to hearing about it.

You mentioned in the Soft White Underbelly vid that "the romantics get the shit beat out of them." Why?...because they're not truly physically and mentally tough?
