I actually like this fast version a lot;it shows that Colin and the boys were really on their toes!Always loved this song from Business As Usual and it still rocks!😁
let me correct that agree it is one of the MAW songs but I love this live version... it's fast and hyperactive sounding...nice sound of urgency to it....
If a rock band is judged solely by how they sound and perform LIVE,then I would say that Men At Work have achieved that, and more;they sound better live.
These guys rocked so fucking hard. It's a shame that egos got in their way of progressing further. BTW - this was from a long-form video called something like "Live In San Francisco..Or Was It Berkeley". I remember waiting with baited breath for this concert to air on HBO in '83/'83 (in my pre-VCR days). if ANYONE has the complete video, PLEASE contact me somehow!!
This was the best lineup. Once John Rees (bass), Jerry Speiser (drums) and Ron Strykert (guitar) left , the band was never the same. They gave the fans two great albums and then egos broke the band up.
Jerry Speiser provided some great drumming on this one. All of them were on-point, really. Would have been nice to see this band perform live back in their heyday.
I thought there were three Men at Work albums. Even though the third one probably was only Greg Ham and Colin Hay...I believe the album was called "Two Hearts" which was still an ok album (not so commercial).
wonderful seeing videos live so under rated i'd like too is hillariously lyric off sets the more serious over kill and it's a mistake songs very versatile and unique in style as others have stated want to hear some thing a little different men at work mate
I get a 'Devo' vibe from this one, albeit with killer drumming thrown in. What an arresting frontman Greg could be, his eyes seem to change colour when he snarls "Distrusted not rusted"...
"Too uptempo" is an understatement - the song sounds like it's going to give itself a heart attack. Great tune, though, and the boys are very entertaining and playful performers.
I find it so very deeply sad that Greg spent his last couple years ashamed of his flute work on Down Under and the lawsuit related to him lifting a line from Kookaburra for it. First of all, I will argue to the end of my days that it should constitute Fair Use, that the lifted line was just a portion of what he brought to the table on that song, it was transformative, and it was a clever reference that fit with the theme of the song being about Australia. From the start, the lawsuit reeks of a corporate cash grab, and I don't think the court should have given it to them. But in particular, he was worried about his legacy, that he would be remembered as a plagiarist, and, on top of my disagreement with the judgment as I detailed in the previous paragraph, when I think of Greg Ham, this song is the first thing I think of. It's my favorite Men At Work song (and I particularly love this live version) and has been since the first time I heard it as a teenager, and Greg wrote it completely on his own. He brought an incredible amount of creativity to the band, and I think he deserved better during his lifetime, and now that he's no longer with us, he deserves to be remembered as an overwhelmingly positive contribution to the world of music.
This song is somewhat annoying, cacophonic, but the basic catchiness of its melody has been stuck in my head, sadly, almost 30 years now. I didn't like it then, too nerdy, but I couldn't forget it, and now, I enjoy hearing it from time to time as it reminds me of simpler times. Go figure. .. and you're all right, to me, the failure of this band not having a long run was one of the few musical tragedies of '80s. Colin's become quite the guitar player though. I still enjoy hearing his voice.
RIP Greg. I must've listened to this song 5,000 times between 1981 and 1983. Godspeed my friend, you'll always be singing in my heart.
R.I.P. Greg Ham, thanks for everything!
Wow! An already frenetic song played even more frenetically, such energy!
They were so good live because they had 100's of gigs under their belt, playing pubs in Australia before they broke worldwide. Great live band..
The sound of the '80's: WONDERFUL, AMAZING, EXCITING!!!
Thanks for this video!
I loved that song when i was a kid....well i still do. did not expect to find this...
That drum solo was bad ass. Dude has surprisingly fast hands.
Yeah these guys were top musicians all round
The best group of 80's. We love their songs in Mexico.
One of our favorite songs to play by them. Men At Work was the best of the 80s. Still a fan
Me too.... they were a part of the 80's music that is STILL admired today.
5 very talented men. Thanks for a life time of memories mates.Greg,I'll see you when I get there....
Yeah, Greg Ham. Rest in peace and harmony. Of all the songs from the album BUSINESS AS USUAL, "Helpless Automaton" was my #1 all-time favorite.
Same, We got this album for my dad, but i played that last song over and over again.
Same, different all around. I loved listening to this and 'I like' by Men Without Hats.
Greg Ham is pretty damn good on vocals here! He was an extremely talented musician
This is my favourite song and our local Canadian band could play it pretty good....big fans up Here...TY Upload.
Such a relevant song so many years later. Love it!
I wish the world could have heard more of your voice. RIP Mr Ham.
Too bad he didn't go off on his own and have a fabulous solo career like bandmate Colin Hay.
I actually like this fast version a lot;it shows that Colin and the boys were really on their toes!Always loved this song from Business As Usual and it still rocks!😁
RIP Greg...you will be missed.
Bought this album on cassette for a quarter last summer. Had no clue how great their songs are outside their singles. Really good stuff.
One of the best records of 80's. My very favorite: Business as usual and Cargo. Fantastic albums!!!
Man, Colin had wrists of steel to play this song that fast
vastly underrated song in my opinion
What a shame the rest of this concert is not on You Tube! This concert is incredible. R.I.P. Greg Ham, you are missed!
let me correct that agree it is one of the MAW songs but I love this live version... it's fast and hyperactive sounding...nice sound of urgency to it....
I will never accept that Greg Ham is gone.
excellent version of an excellent song!
If a rock band is judged solely by how they sound and perform LIVE,then I would say that Men At Work have achieved that, and more;they sound better live.
+JBodine67 true!
Devo as well
Always loved this song.
RIP Greg Ham
R.I.P greg ham

LOVE THIS SONG
Greg and Colin are extraordinary .
Ron Strykert is seriously 1:24

This is my best drums sólo, unfortunatelly underated, perhaps
Now THIS is new wave
FANTASTIC BAND.
i freaking love this song!
¡Banda de los 80's extraordinaria y única en su estilo!
80's band, extraordinary & unique in its style!
LOVE this song!
Jerry Speiser provided some great drumming on this one. All of them were on-point, really. Would have been nice to see this band perform live back in their heyday.
Damn Speiser goes ham (pun intended) at 2:13!! Go dude go!!
Great album Greg Ham was so talented. Him and Colin Hay were Men at Work. Colin Hay alone or with others should never call themselfs Men at Work.
fuckin amazing..
awesome stuff
Awesome Song, Cheers for posting

That drums tho
One of Melbourne’s finest
I SWEAR I can go a *single day* without coming back!!!!
You are not the only one. I love this version of helpless automaton.
@@josemarioacosta1432 Same with me, especially the bass line
You can, huh?
greg actually looks pretty good*_*
merci pour ce morceau!! c'est mon préféré chez Men at Work^^
I just lose it when I hear those drum fills
wonderful seeing videos live so under rated i'd like too is hillariously lyric off sets the more serious over kill and it's a mistake songs very versatile and unique in style as others have stated want to hear some thing a little different men at work mate
The best to play at midnight
IMO: if it wasn't for that two year lay off, Men at Work could have made it into the 1990s.
I get a 'Devo' vibe from this one, albeit with killer drumming thrown in. What an arresting frontman Greg could be, his eyes seem to change colour when he snarls "Distrusted not rusted"...
One of the best on the album
LA MUSICA DE AHORA, COMPARADA CON ESTE GRUPO; ES UNA !VIVA MEN AT WORK¡
Great
"Too uptempo" is an understatement - the song sounds like it's going to give itself a heart attack. Great tune, though, and the boys are very entertaining and playful performers.
colin hay is awesome
i stay in my room...
brilliant!
True song
Colin Hay , Yamaha SG ! nice
They're playing it way too fast from the original version.
Live when? Where?
yes there were 3
At 1:35 how does he do that?
Who? The bass player?
Greg hamm... a man you should never near sweats sugar or cocaine... in that order...
I wonder what the venue posted?
Gostaria de saber onde foi o show postado?

It was good! The part where it sounded weak was when he said "Hey! It's through!", etc. It didn't sound as good as the recorded version there.
Wonder why they sped it up so much...
2:44 lol
Why is it so much faster here than on the record?
This is just me but this song would have been perfect for the game Rock Band.
I thought I was the only one who thought this ;)
2:50 nice view.
