Not the person who was interviewed, but the everyday people who saw this and were outraged. And you're completely right when it comes to the way the interviewer chose to ask the questions and make his "subject" feel safe - that's the way to do it, if you want honest answers. Lay the trap and let the person you interview talk themselves into oblivion! Thank you for this video, it was a wonderful way to start this *very* grey morning in Norway! I'll go check out some of your other videos now. Have a great week!
My father recalled this interview to me during the recent events concerning “Big Phil”. I struggled to find context for the interview during a RUclips search 2 weeks ago. Thank you for the wonderfully put together video with plenty of context, as well as philosophical analysis.
You're ability to explain and tell this piece of political history is outstanding! Your style is fluid, funny and you keep the watcher/listener interested to the end. I am of an age where I remember this whole scandal, but honestly, not until watching this video today and how well you put it together to explain the timeline of events, did I really understand what happened. Thank you so much. Please make more of the same. Thank you!

When politicians are out & about looking for votes, this is their number 1 tactic. Lull the public into a false sense of security. "All will be alright, if you vote for me." The same "lull" is currently in progress right now, in relation to the "cov"id to vaccine" scenario.
Everyone has here seen the physical culmination of corruption brought to account. Gemma O'Doherty is nearly the only one now in Ireland trying to highlight the levels of corruption taking place which now far exceeds some payments for rezoning. Barry O'Halloran who presses Flynn is widely seen as a hero, yet Gemma O'Doherty is portrayed as a crank, an undesirable, for challenging corruption. How far we have fallen.
I think this might have been another 'key turning point' in politics - the moment when politicians realized the importance of large-scale PR management more in line with what you would see from a big corporation. After all, most of this corruption from back in the day hasn't ceased in any way, it's simply moved into the backrooms of large corporate buildings so it would make sense that politicians have to start advertising and promoting themselves with an image that's more 'corporate friendly'.
I spent most of my life in Ireland, and remember these incidents very well indeed. Congratulations, Imparter, on an excellent report, that manages to get in just enough detail to explain, without clutter, the scale of the corruption that everyone knew was part of normal political life in Ireland, especially but by no means exclusively within the Fianna Fáil party. This is an excellent piece of reporting and video editing.
Glad to hear some young person anywhere is interested in the body politics. It shows you can care about the world's problems and look for solutions. History can be sugar coated and this is history even if quite recent. If you keep notes and keep up with the maze of info you could write a book or even a novel. Good luck.

He really suffered as since 1999 the man has been receiving a sizable pension of around 80k plus another 40k from Europe and had a nice golden handshake of 250k when he had to resign. Never saw the inside of a jail for one night and instead is still living it up on a government pension.
The thing that got me most was that even after admitting to giving Haughey two blank checks Bertie was voted back into power within 6 months. Have never been so shocked at voter naivety in my life.

Byrne's interview was a masterclass. He buttered up Flynn's ego until Flynn's already big ego was bursting, then lured him into saying the wrong thing. If he had attacked him, Flynn would have closed up. Instead he lured him into feeling it was going brilliantly and he could say anything. He then sat back and let Flynn talk himself into a car crash.
Good people cannot expose the new and old, corrupt movers and shakers that move and do dodgy business deals like the snakes politicians; for fear the Gardai (Police) will burst into your house on the demands of the usual lying state representatives issuing an illegal order to deal out their version of justice.

Thank you!

Ah, Gay was brilliant. He knew how to suck people into a false sense of security.
and then deliver that earth shaking compliment at the end!
Like Ali G or Borat.
Gay is the patron saint of Ireland !
When politicians are out & about looking for votes, this is their number 1 tactic. Lull the public into a false sense of security. "All will be alright, if you vote for me."
The same "lull" is currently in progress right now, in relation to the "cov"id to vaccine" scenario.
@Dave Roche there should be a statue to that.
Thumbs up to Barry O'Halloran, for initiating the line of questioning.
Probably planted there especially for that. That was a trick Byrne used on a good few occasions.

After all, most of this corruption from back in the day hasn't ceased in any way, it's simply moved into the backrooms of large corporate buildings so it would make sense that politicians have to start advertising and promoting themselves with an image that's more 'corporate friendly'.
glad to have you back!

Impressive stuff man, haven’t seen video quality from a Chanel this small ever.
Unironically one of the most well put together videos I’ve seen in awhile
The fact that I can be a 17 year old American and still be fascinated by your video speaks greatly of your story telling. Well done
Is it really so surprising? Why do you think American teens shouldn't be interested in foreign affairs?
Glad to hear some young person anywhere is interested in the body politics. It shows you can care about the world's problems and look for solutions. History can be sugar coated and this is history even if quite recent. If you keep notes and keep up with the maze of info you could write a book or even a novel. Good luck.

He really suffered as since 1999 the man has been receiving a sizable pension of around 80k plus another 40k from Europe and had a nice golden handshake of 250k when he had to resign. Never saw the inside of a jail for one night and instead is still living it up on a government pension.

I don’t leave comments on video, but to the creator, this was amazing. The editing and storytelling was master class. What you made about a subject that could be easily considered boring and dull, you turned into something fascinating and interesting. Please god keep up the good work. Would love to see more videos like this on other Irish political scandals
Vividly remember this interview as a teenager....hugely disliked his pompous arrogance that night. Did no one advise him about media interviews
I often wondered that too. I think he guys like him got carried away with themselves and didn't know when to put the brakes on. Their success was partly based on shady deals and partly on this 'everything's going to be great for everyone' mantra which some people fell for. Bluster was their default setting. It’s fascinating watching this again

I'd love to see more videos like this, diving into recent Irish history and shining the spotlight on some of our former politicians to highlight the corruption that existed (and still exists). I might be be a skeptic but I find the huge bill of projects such as the children's hospital and the rural broadband plan a bit suspicious... and with such cost of such projects it would be very temping for our elected officials to line their pockets via nepotism or other means... bit again I'm a skeptic. The truth would make for a very interesting video though ;)

Genuinely great video. Well edited and explained. Remember hearing about this in my younger years and feeling so bored and drained by the never ending tribunals. I guess that's what the politicians legal team want to happen, bore the shite out of the public by making it sound complicated and they'll eventually lose interest.
I just want to thank you for including music citations (and links!) in your description. So few channels do this.
More more more! I want to learn the fine details of different countries political histories and I never knew it would be so fun! You have a great knack for concise story telling mate!

I don't understand how saying "he's out of sorts" is the line that killed his career. Did he just piss the guy off that he was talking about and encouraged him to give evidence?

In 11 minutes you've explained them better than the media at that time.

Byrne's interview was a masterclass. He buttered up Flynn's ego until Flynn's already big ego was bursting, then lured him into saying the wrong thing.
