Chokos are easy to get in Australia, years ago everyone grew one on their fence. If you store a choko in a dark place it sprouts easily and grows into a fruiting vine when planted. My gran used to tell me that during the war housewives used to make "apple pie " with Chokos and she said they were lovely. She used to say if you could find a blackberry patch and pick some you could make "apple and blackberry pie". She said they were extra tasty. Chokos also make great pickles or relish and are great grilled and smothered in butter. It's good to know they are low carb.

I use chayote (chokos, here is Oz) as faux apple for pies, crumbles, scrolls and muffins, however, I use a few drops of apple extract when cooking the chokos. When done, in whatever form, I would defy anyone that claimed they could tell the difference …. But that’s just me 😁. If you can get either apple extract or a sugar free apple flavouring, try it……..you then get the apple flavour as well as the crunch without the carbs. 😋😋

Chocho or chayote (squash) is widely available in Texas, Houston to be exact as for my knowledge. I always said it was like a cross between an apple and a very firm pear. It has a mild pear taste too. A jamacian friend (they love chocho) introduced it to me while I lived in Houston (20 years). I never looked up a recipe but I would eat it like an apple, and sometimes make it like your filling to use as glazed apples on my homemade whole wheat pancakes. It was excellent... and today YOU come up in my RUclips feed making the hand pies like I always talked about but didn't. I moved back home 2 years ago (southeastern state) and you can't find it here at all. I can order it to be shipped but that's a pain. Great job and because I love everything apple, except apple jelly😣 (unless I use it to glaze a pastry or salmon😏), I will definitely try this and I'll do the lattice crust.🤗 Thanks for the inspiration. 💞🤗

Chayote is actually available everywhere here because many people from all over Asia use it in their cooking. My husband is Filipino and they call it “sayote,” and I just cooked it in some tinola (chicken soup) yesterday. My favorite name for it is “chow chow” which I think might be the Hindi name because I’ve seen it labeled like that in markets here that cater to a lot of Indian (like actually from India) customers. 💚

I used a chayote in an apple crisp keto and it was excellent. Chayote is in all of the stores in my area.

Chop the zucchini smaller, it really helps the texture. Great video, thanks; made me want an appl-y hand-pie immediately. Big fan of fathead dough.

I had a bumper crop of tomatoes last year and ended up madly searching for ways to include green tomatoes. Came across a mock apple pie recipe. Although I am Keto 99% of the time…I love making (and eating) traditional flaky pie crust…and make non-keto pie 1% of the time. Anyway, served up my mock apple pie…and it was delish!! The texture is not altogether there if you are accustomed to apple chunks in pie, but the taste was delish and super apple-like…conjuring warm fall flavours from childhood. Green tomatoes are another low carb alternative. BTW: will try Keto Focus’ dough recipe that you raved about ...to see if I could ever give up traditional pie crust. Also, a sprinkle of granulated sweetener after applying the egg wash completes the apple hand pie experience!! 🍎

@igglewiggle6649, keto focus has a recipe for a nice keto roll out crust just like the traditional ones, it is very good, I have made it for my pumpkin pies. It is good for sweet or savory pies.

I like zucchini for apple sauce and chayote for anything that you want to retain the crunchy texture with. I boil the zucchini's whole then blend it and strain it through a sieve. I like to add allulose for the browning and it makes it more sticky as oppose to watery, vegetal and bland and some malic acid for that appley tang. For the chayote I like to cut them into thin slices and pan fry them in allulose or whatever sweetener you like with the malic acid.
If you're going to get malic acid make sure it's the powdered acid instead of the magnesium malate pills... lol

Wow, these looks so good. Love the lattice idea. Did the Chayote bother your hands when peeling it? I've heard people complain about it. Some say to use gloves. What was your experience with it? I saw several people use the yellow summer squash instead of zucchini in making apple pie.. They say it has a more neutral flavor than zucchini. Have you had a chance to try the yellow squash? I love your recipes. Thank you for all the hard work that you put into these video's!

I’ve never tried zucchini in place of apples, but my mom has used Chayote, and it is pretty good from what I remember, but you know what else I like using in place of apples? Jicama!
I remember my cutting them up for a savory dish one time, and I wanted to try a piece raw, and something about it made me think of an apple mixed with a water chestnut, so I told my mom we should try it with apple pie spices, and it was super good! Tasted just like an apple! (To me at least).
Jicamas obviously will never get as soft as an apple when cooked unfortunately, so the filling will always have a little more crunch to it, but never bothered me, so, jicama has always been my favorite Apple pie replacement 😋

Had a really hard time with the fathead dough but - I'm impressed with the taste & texture. My boys approved saying - it tasted like pie crust.
I softened some cream cheese, added some vanilla & keto sweetener.... YUM...
Almost like apple pie a la mode!
