Great idea!
If you soak/ cook the zuke in an Apple Cinnamon tea, (1-2 bags, soak a half hour) then sweeten it, it really tastes like apple. Thanks for the demo!
I actually considered doing this! Will try it out 🤗
@@ketotwins do it! My family doesn’t know the difference.
Thanks for the tip!
Yes! I was going to suggest this, too. So good in strong apple cinnamon tea.
Wow, what a great idea, thank you 😋
I’ve tried the zucchini mock apple pie (not keto version) and nobody knew it wasn’t apple. My recipe had lemon in it, it gave the zucchini more of a tang like apple.
You had me at ‘trick my husband.’ 😀
Try a yellow zucchini and peel it and take seeds out. I tried the yellow and can’t tell it’s zucchini. Thanks for the video looks good especially the lattice one.👍🤗
We live in the Philippines where Chayote is cheap and plentiful. I had no idea chayote is keto. Just wOw, because we love stir fried chayote and can definitely make it now on keto. I used to love conventional apple pie so I will look for your chayote apple pie recipe as well as try this zucchini one. 😊
Fuji and grannysmith apples are actually pretty low carb (12.8 and 14 net carbs respectively). I use them to make apple pies all the time. My husband can definitely tell the difference between an apple and a chayote, so I’m glad there are great low carb apples available.
Try jicama! That's my fave, but I'm going to look for chayote and give that a go too 🤗 YAY for cinnamony fall recipes!!
I've done both jicama is my preference sliced thin and steam cooked in an instapot.
Chokos are easy to get in Australia, years ago everyone grew one on their fence. If you store a choko in a dark place it sprouts easily and grows into a fruiting vine when planted. My gran used to tell me that during the war housewives used to make "apple pie " with Chokos and she said they were lovely. She used to say if you could find a blackberry patch and pick some you could make "apple and blackberry pie". She said they were extra tasty. Chokos also make great pickles or relish and are great grilled and smothered in butter. It's good to know they are low carb.
Pickles are a great idea! Thanks Sharyn 🤗
Jicama is a great option and stays slightly crisp like apples when cooked, and with celestial seasons apple cinnamon tea bags and even some apple flavor mio. Super yummy
You two continue to amaze. I love how you explain with such humor and seriousness at the same time. Please bring the hubbies back again if they will. You're all adorable! Thanks for what you do.
peel and dice chayote squash and boil in the apple cinnamon tea until soft and then mix the normal apple pie spices..subbing the sugar of course and omg it's amazing
Sounds amazing I’ll try it!
Chayote, which we call choko in Australia was fed to me as Apple pie for years by my grandmother before I found out. It was always a favourite. Probably because of the ton of sugar.😉
We have used yellow sqash to make apple pie and I feel it's better then zucchini. I use a little extra lemon juice to give more of a "granny Smith" flavor
Thank you for the great video! My 1st attempt at duplicating apple pie, I used small yellow squash. There are almost no seeds and my non-keto family couldn't tell that it wasn't apple. So far, I haven't been able to find chayote in my city. I'll have to try the lattice. Thanks again! ♥️♥️♥️
really thin sliced and instpot pressure cooked jicama is my all time favorite apple replacement. a cool little tip is to blend 1/3 to 1/2 of your filling into a "apple sauce" which just helps with the texture and mouth feel too.
Yellow crookneck squash is great in sweet dishes and doesn’t taste as vegetal as zucchini. I’m definitely gonna try this. Thanks, ladies 👍
Thanks for the yellow squash suggestion, Athena -- I liked the peeled yellow squash soaked in apple cinnamon tea better than the chayote! Worked great!
My goal for Christmas is to do the lattice hand pies with your chayote recipe, and maybe jicama as well ("Life with Lori" uses jicama in her keto apple pie waffles and they look incredible).
Ladies- I don't even like apple pie, so this is a testament to your very tempting, very fall bakery episode.
Love your detailed reviews. You don’t just eat it and say “ummm”. You tell us about it as if we were eating it…thank you 🥰
Haha we appreciate that, we feel like we have a hard time being descriptive when we eat so thanks for the compliment 😂
I just made this using yellow squash and it tastes dead up like apple pie. Thanks twins!
Green apple koolaid powder would be good too to add to the cooking sauce or soak the faux apple in. I like the tea idea but the koolaid is a much stronger apple 🍏 flavor.
I made faux apple crisp using zucchini and no one knew the difference. I am currently canning faux strawberry jam out of green tomatoes. Every recipe known to man is on U Tube. Cooking zucchini in lemon juice is the key then adding the spice.
I made the filling in a pot using chayote using your recipe, but I added cardamon. I made a crumble mixture with butter, almond flour, and ground pecans, and walnuts. It turned out so delicious, that my husband was amazed. Now I want to grow my own chayote!
I used a tbsp. of apple cider vinegar to coat the chopped chayote to mask the squash flavour.
I made these chayote pies. They taste like apple, I can’t believe it!! Thanks so much for this recipe, I really love it!! U girls are so great I just love to watch u all. U guys make me laugh like Carol Burnett.
I made this w/ Chayote Squash last fall, I called them Keto Popstarts though and put icing on them.
I use chayote (chokos, here is Oz) as faux apple for pies, crumbles, scrolls and muffins, however, I use a few drops of apple extract when cooking the chokos. When done, in whatever form, I would defy anyone that claimed they could tell the difference …. But that’s just me 😁. If you can get either apple extract or a sugar free apple flavouring, try it……..you then get the apple flavour as well as the crunch without the carbs. 😋😋
Thank you girls for sharing your recipe. It looks yummy😊💕👏🏼
Thanks for this great comparison video! You give us such great ideas! Love it!💞
Looks like wonderful recipes. I definitely am going to refer back to this video. Thanks ladies👍
Happy Autumn 🍂
Found choco at fruit and veg market in Australia. I’m chuffed (happy)! Lol, thanks Keto Twins!! 💜
One my favorite youtubers just made an apple filling recipe and I had to click out of her video to not get cravings. 😩 Then I right away see this video. Thank you 😌
Those look so pretty and good. I like when the filling oozes out a little.
Been a subscriber for a while now, love the content. Thanks for continuing to share tips and tricks. On difficult days, you two have been much needed motivation.
Stuffed mirliton is a big thing in South Louisiana. Crab, shrimp, or crawfish stuffing, yum!
Very exciting Ladies. Thank you. I’m glued to my screen ❤
Hello beautiful twins!💗
Will be making these for the holidays!🎄 Thank you for the gift of another keto recipe😉👍
Ladeeeeez!! I tried the chayote filling and it was the best tasting keto recipe I've tried yet!! I didn't make pies, but I served it with a peppercorn pork roast - gave "pork chops and applesauce" vibes - congrats on a great, delicious idea!!
Oh wow! I love that idea! Thanks for sharing 🤗🤗
Great job. This looks like a winner. I’m going to give it a try. We have them in our grocery stores and our Vallarta market has them as well.
Looks so good! Can’t wait to try them
Chocho or chayote (squash) is widely available in Texas, Houston to be exact as for my knowledge. I always said it was like a cross between an apple and a very firm pear. It has a mild pear taste too. A jamacian friend (they love chocho) introduced it to me while I lived in Houston (20 years). I never looked up a recipe but I would eat it like an apple, and sometimes make it like your filling to use as glazed apples on my homemade whole wheat pancakes. It was excellent... and today YOU come up in my RUclips feed making the hand pies like I always talked about but didn't. I moved back home 2 years ago (southeastern state) and you can't find it here at all. I can order it to be shipped but that's a pain. Great job and because I love everything apple, except apple jelly😣 (unless I use it to glaze a pastry or salmon😏), I will definitely try this and I'll do the lattice crust.🤗 Thanks for the inspiration. 💞🤗
Looks so delicious, I love chayote (potato salad). I am going to try apple pie with Chayote. Thanks for sharing your recipes.
Bout halfway through making this. I chose the chayote. My sauce was Runny so I sprinkled some coconut flour (not even 1/8 tsp) and it thickened right up!
It tastes AWESOME. Can't wait to try the finished product. I think I might sweeten some cream cheese and add a dash of vanilla to drizzle over the top.
My non-keto teenage boys both tried and approved the filling. I'm SO impressed! Thank you!
Great tip! So glad you all liked it!
The Wal-Mart app said that our Jerseyville, IL has Chayote. It's pretty much a "small town" so with any luck, other people can find it at their local Wal-Mart.
Hi Twins! You reminded me of a Mock Apple Pie Bars (aka Zucchini) that we made yrs back when there was an abundance of Zucchini. And the truck was to not over cook it. I wasn't Keto then but I bet I could totally Ketofy (pretty sure that's a word now) it?! I'll look for it and forward it to you. Excited to try both versions. Touchdown on that lattice btw!! 🏈
Blessings from Iowa, L
This is exciting! I tried the chayote before and found it glorious, but wasn't thrilled with my "crumble" recipe. Now I have an excuse to try again!
Thank you girls 😘 hmmm guess I gotta try to find one of those cha things lol, thank you for the experiment,y'all are the BEST!!!
Awesome idea to use chayote, I would have never thought of that. Living in South Texas, chayote is readily available, but I never thought to use it in a pie. I'm definitely going to try this recipe. Great video ladies
Hey ladies always enjoy your videos..this was interesting using the zucchini. Thank you for sharing 🤗🤗❤️
there is a keto pie bakery near me.. for thanksgiving this year (im Canadian) i ordered some keto pies. the 'apple' crumble with zuke was phenomneal. could not even taste a difference! love the innovation
Omgoodness I just made the lattice apple pie using chayote ! my husband & I can't believe how good it!! THANKS AGAIN KETO TWINS TEST KITCHEN!!! 🙂
🤗🤗🤗🤗
I’m definitely going to make these for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the video. ❤️
FYI: Chayote squash is pretty popular where I’m from in south Louisiana. We call them alligator pears or mirlitons (we pronounce it mer - lah - tawn).
I pronounce everything wrong lol! 😬🙈
@@ketotwins I was thinking you pronounced it right and our Louisiana accent changed how we pronounce it in the south. One day our dialects between Chicago and south Louisiana will be so different they’ll be 2 different languages. Good thing I’ve moved to Texas where we talk good. 😂
@@ketotwins if not from where they use mirliton nobody could pronounce it right. They love it here and stuff it. I made it once for my other half and he told me to never attempt again.
@@doggoneme3863 lol!
@@sternits it's French; you pronounce it right, I'm thinking. The guy in the video said "MEER lit tawn," (accent on meer.) And of course the "tawn" he pronounced from up in his nose, the way French always sounds to us anglophones.
These look so delicious!! You guys are so fun to watch!❤
Green tomatoes are also a great substitute for apples, but it has to be summer, obviously!
I cooked your last (first?) chayote recipe and it was a total win!! I found it at my local Walmart. I also tried some of that Alpine SF spiced cider mix to saute it in and that, too, was delicious!! Once again, yall are a delight to watch!
I've got 2 chayote squash sprouting to plant later..... I'm excited to try this recipe.
Thanks for your recipe
These look yum! I’ve only used yellow squash as an apple substitute and it also worked really well.
Apparently squashes are good for sweetened dessert recipes.
6:03 you girls crack me up! Thanks for trying all these recipes for us!
I love this! I will try these soon. I also like the tip about using apple cinnamon tea and now I wonder if you could also use peach or blueberry teas the same way. Celestial Seasonings has great fruit teas.
Those "apple" pies looked yummy! Thanks for the recipe!
Ohhhh I will be making these for my husband. Thank you for sharing
Try yellow squash next time. I've made pie with it and it is very mild.
Ladies, these productions in the kitchen are "spot on". This is a fine art and you nail it every time! Those green fat things 🤣 that you found in Chicago are very common here in the deserts (close to the Mexico border) I think? Seems like I remember seeing them occasionally - have to try these out for all us diabetic desert rats. They even look like apple pies! 🥰
I've used yellow squash to replace the apples -- have been really happy with the results!
Also known as su-su in my family in South Africa. Interesting apple su-su pie.
try adding a little cream of tartar--it will add a little sour taste which makes it taste more like apple
Great recipe. Might have to give it a try
In Australia Chayote is called Choko
I made two different apple pies. I used zucchini soaked in the apple cinnamon tea, and I used radish slices soaked in
the tea as well. They both were good. I didn't use dough. I used a crumb crust for the bottom and the top.
I'm not sure which I like better but they are both good.
Chayote didn’t work for me, but I’m excited to try zuke.💕They look luscious!
Great video! Thanks for the info. We can find chayote right in our Publix supermarket!
Just made one the other day using yellow summer squash - pretty good!
Good to know summer squash works too!
I’ve done both and they were both surprisingly good. The zucchini is better if you get bigger ones and use lemon for a little tart green apple taste. I made them both as apple crumble also. Everyone liked them. Thumbs up , ladies.
Those pies looked so amazing coming out of the oven. 🤤
I haven’t tried the chayote hack yet but I will soon, since I’m missing fall over here in UAE where it’s still in the 90s every day.
Chayote is actually available everywhere here because many people from all over Asia use it in their cooking. My husband is Filipino and they call it “sayote,” and I just cooked it in some tinola (chicken soup) yesterday. My favorite name for it is “chow chow” which I think might be the Hindi name because I’ve seen it labeled like that in markets here that cater to a lot of Indian (like actually from India) customers. 💚
I first ate chayote when I was overseas 35 years ago. Since then I cook with it regularly, and I’ve always been able to find them at my local Asian markets. Even now when I live in a smaller town.
Great recipes! Thanks ❤❤
chayote awsome substitute of apples i used them in the keto version of apple crust and was delicious using cinamon and monk fruit couldnt tell the difference
What a great video! Apple crumble next hopefully.
I miss all things apple this time of year. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome Lynne!
Your pies came out so pretty! I just recently made a chayote "apple" crumble and it came out SO good! I'm sold on chayote as an apple substitute now. I also got some apple flavoring drops, but haven't tried adding them yet. The filling was surprisingly good without them. Gonna try a pie with the fathead dough next!
What is your Crumble recipe plz?
I tried your Chayote Pie and it was great!
I used a chayote in an apple crisp keto and it was excellent. Chayote is in all of the stores in my area.
Chop the zucchini smaller, it really helps the texture. Great video, thanks; made me want an appl-y hand-pie immediately. Big fan of fathead dough.
Now maybe try jicama for apples? I heard that is the best replacement.🤔😀Yours looked beautiful!
We will have to try that next!! :)
looks good, chayote is always available in Central Texas, going to try this and shape like empanadas
I live in New Mexico... chayote is def available. Will try this for the holidays, as well as for potato salad that a viewer mentioned. Thank you girls for being courageous!!!!! And cute. And funny 🤣
Potato salad is one we have to try as well! Thanks Allie!
I had a bumper crop of tomatoes last year and ended up madly searching for ways to include green tomatoes. Came across a mock apple pie recipe. Although I am Keto 99% of the time…I love making (and eating) traditional flaky pie crust…and make non-keto pie 1% of the time. Anyway, served up my mock apple pie…and it was delish!! The texture is not altogether there if you are accustomed to apple chunks in pie, but the taste was delish and super apple-like…conjuring warm fall flavours from childhood. Green tomatoes are another low carb alternative. BTW: will try Keto Focus’ dough recipe that you raved about ...to see if I could ever give up traditional pie crust. Also, a sprinkle of granulated sweetener after applying the egg wash completes the apple hand pie experience!! 🍎
Great suggestion! Never would have thought of that!
@igglewiggle6649, keto focus has a recipe for a nice keto roll out crust just like the traditional ones, it is very good, I have made it for my pumpkin pies. It is good for sweet or savory pies.
the Costanza method never fails ❤️
I like zucchini for apple sauce and chayote for anything that you want to retain the crunchy texture with. I boil the zucchini's whole then blend it and strain it through a sieve. I like to add allulose for the browning and it makes it more sticky as oppose to watery, vegetal and bland and some malic acid for that appley tang. For the chayote I like to cut them into thin slices and pan fry them in allulose or whatever sweetener you like with the malic acid.
If you're going to get malic acid make sure it's the powdered acid instead of the magnesium malate pills... lol
Can you try making the same pies using KetoFocus pie dough? Her dough looks nice 🤷🏻♀️
I’m going to try this!
Thank you 2 big hugs.
🤗🤗
Maybe add a green apple flavoring or extract to the zuchinni mixture? I'll try some day.
Looking great guys, nice work 👌
I have to try this!
GREAT recipe!
Wow, these looks so good. Love the lattice idea. Did the Chayote bother your hands when peeling it? I've heard people complain about it. Some say to use gloves. What was your experience with it? I saw several people use the yellow summer squash instead of zucchini in making apple pie.. They say it has a more neutral flavor than zucchini. Have you had a chance to try the yellow squash? I love your recipes. Thank you for all the hard work that you put into these video's!
The hand pies look very good. I hope to be able to find the chayote so I can try them.
I’ve never tried zucchini in place of apples, but my mom has used Chayote, and it is pretty good from what I remember, but you know what else I like using in place of apples? Jicama!
I remember my cutting them up for a savory dish one time, and I wanted to try a piece raw, and something about it made me think of an apple mixed with a water chestnut, so I told my mom we should try it with apple pie spices, and it was super good! Tasted just like an apple! (To me at least).
Jicamas obviously will never get as soft as an apple when cooked unfortunately, so the filling will always have a little more crunch to it, but never bothered me, so, jicama has always been my favorite Apple pie replacement 😋
Had a really hard time with the fathead dough but - I'm impressed with the taste & texture. My boys approved saying - it tasted like pie crust.
I softened some cream cheese, added some vanilla & keto sweetener.... YUM...
Almost like apple pie a la mode!
Wow I must try this. I barely have heard of chayote but I think it’s available near me. Thanks!
It's so good! Hope you like it!
