The trick only works with a fast moving Heli. The trick goes like this: you stay at 180 knph, with some alt to dive (40 50 meters), get locked, flare late but flare 5 10 times like a mad man and dive during the whole process. If you are under 150knph, there is just no saving grace.

The best way to use flares in PR is how the bots use it to break the lock instead confuse the missile once it's already coming. Flare every 0.5-1 second when getting locked and they will never get a full lock. If you spam the flares the missile might redirect to the new flare and hit you anyway.
Yes there is, where you use server lag to your advantage and fire before you hear lock in sound and the rocket going to kill a heli and droping flare wont help or rocket just change target to another air asset.
As Seb mentioned, be pre flaring but make sure to distance yourself from those flares. Even if the missile hits a flare, they can protect you but to close and you are in the blast radius. You have 60 flares get in the habit of using them all. That being said make sure you don’t pop them all to prematurely, I use every flare every flight but save a few for the return and I’m even popping them in DOD because unless you are friends with the admin they won’t do shit if you get hit in dod, and even if you are buddies with the admin you still have to wait for your bird to respawn

I never once trusted flares in PR.
they are pretty OP, they can often act as a shield and eat up the blast of the AA missile even if your flares in close proximity to your bird
