Yay!!! Thank you ladies and you are welcome. I think the drink is best when you have that richer Mexican chocolate. I do put a little spice in mine though. Just a small dash of cayenne really brings something to the mug. Cinnamon and of course, nutmeg. :P
Thank you again and you've made my dreary Monday brighter. Rain, rain go away!

Add a little nutmeg and invite Jon Townsend over for a cup.

Mexican chocolate comes originally from Yucatan. The chocolate or Xocolatl is indeed a dark variety but what makes the drink rather unique are the addition of exotic spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, mace, alspice, and or cayenne pepper along with a sweetener. The ancient Maya made an fermented beverage from chocolate that was given to sacrificial victims to make their passage from life less unpleasant. It was also used in other rituals and for healing. They believed chocolate was given to them by the gods.

Its actually pretty common to use musical instruments to mix hot chocolate. Personally I use a trombone. Pro Tip- make sure to clear the spit valve first

Agreed, best to use a brass or wood instrument. That one time in band camp with the bagpipes!

That's a good way to end up with a rusty trombone! Ba da bum

Will any musical instrument do? I don’t have a trombone but I did just get a guitar. I think the fretboard would make amazing foam. 😄

add a little condensed milk w reg. whole milk ... Go 1-1/2 on those chocolate wafers for richer taste. Dash of cinnamon and cayenne if brave... Mexican sweet bread for dipping... lol

Awesome! You can make your own version of Mexican hot chocolate with a bar of dark chocolate, or even unsweetened baking chocolate (but you have to add an equal amount of brown sugar or white sugar if you use the unsweetened), and your own amounts of spices and flavorings. If you melt the chocolate in water, it's even more intensely chocolatey! I like to use the baking chocolate, white sugar, cinnamon, a pinch of chili powder (I actually use crushed red pepper flakes), and then add a drop of vanilla extract and a splash of rosewater after I take the chocolate mixture off of the heat. Put the whole spices in with the water when you bring it to the boil, then take the spices out, add the broken-up chocolate and stir/whisk just like you did here, and add the vanilla (or any other alcohol-based flavoring -- you could use a dash of rum or brandy, too!) after you take the chocolate off of the heat, or just add it to the chocolate when it's in your cup. Super tasty!

'A watched pot never boils' ... it's an old adage. Anyway, I purchased a Molinillo at a second hand shop and thought it was some kind of rattle...lol. The shop tag said 'rattle' but it didn't really make a convincing sound to me, so I had my doubts...as I collect instruments and sound making things. I noticed it said 'Oaxaca' in the carving on one of the rings...so, knowing where it was from helped me identify it. I'll have to purchase some Mexican hot chocolate mix and try this thing out.

Love this stuff. Perhaps you guys can try a day at Olvera Street in downtown LA and see other fun Mexico cooking. Had my first chicharon soup there...mmmm
Or Natalie and Tara try working at the tortilla making part of a Vallarta Market. Or by the end of the year...Natalie and Tara make Christmas tamales...that should be fun...lol

We usually use a piece of the chocolate to make 1 liter of chocolate (4 cups)...and you can use water instead of milk. Another drink you can make is called "champurrado", the same procedure, one piece of chocolate, a liter of water and 3 table spoons of corn starch, it is delicious!!

I saw this whisk on Amazon and so fun to find this on Utube. I want to try the chocolate drink but I must say an electric whisk would save the mess and be used WAY more in the kitchen
