      I think it’s just your area. The thrift stores in TN and AL have remained basically the same. Some Goodwills have raised their prices a dollar over the past 10 years, which honestly isn’t bad considering they are still lower than inflation. I want to know how you got to that conclusion, and which Goodwills you’re referring to. The most likely cause is inflation. If you live in a high COL area, everything goes up.

    Goodwill funds community programs. They get money from consumers by reselling donations. If you’re mad poor people don’t have designer clothes, be mad at Goodwill since all the stuff they sell is free to them. The goal is to fund programs, not giving poor people Peter Millar shirts. Without consumers they have $0.00.

  • @MyFictionalChaos
    @MyFictionalChaos 2 года назад +1

    I agree that the idea of "scalpers" is wrong HOWEVER lot of the comments seemed to pick the idea off of tiktok that buying stuff from goodwill/thrift shops is inherently BAD. It isn't! Some people who sell online dont do it as a "side hustle" but as their main job. Legit, people who GENUINELY need the money sell stuff. They sell it to people who want it because THEY need the money. Before this became a "trend", a lot of broke people with a keen eye would go in and buy stuff that was expensive just to be able to own it themselves. I will say it used to be more common that people who shop for themselves will also pick up stuff to sell to others. People who sell are letting other people who cant afford full price to have a discount. A lot of times it isn't pricing super high for greed but instead is making a little money to help other people be able to afford stuff (people who thrift online also can't afford the thing theyre buying and thus, buy it at a lower price but may not be able to find it at their location).
    And before you say well hey, people come in here to buy stuff THEY want but can't afford - this is true in specific areas and for specific items. I mean, it is better to sell stuff than have it sit around, even though you dont know exactly where it is going. As someone who ACTUALLY goes to thrift stores, a lot of thrift stores have stuff that sits untouched.
    I think the bigger issue is to stop fast fashion because we honestly have a bigger problem trying to get RID of clothes than we do for people who go in and actually buy the clothes.
    TLDR the message has always been a good message but i think it is silly to crucify people for just going to thrift shops (and the bigger problem is fast fashion)

    I run a small mom-and-pop thrift store who deals with goodwill and arc from time to time, let me tell you, the people threes stores serve are not the people barely making food money. Second hand stores are here to sell gently used items at a discounted rate (most of the time), they do sometimes sell items to people who can’t afford new but most of the time how they actually help is by donating part or most of their profits to community organizations that then give out new items and vouchers to people who need them. Him flipping a bread maker or a pair of jeans isn’t gonna hurt the homeless, it actually helps as his money gets used to actually get things people need, and it’s a lot easier to sell used stuff than to beg for money donations.

    I have to agree, if you’re looking to make a quick profit go to a garage sale. Goodwill is for people who need it, also for people who appreciate a good deal I guess there’s no shame shopping there but it’s primarily made for the less fortunate that was the goal.

    Just an FYI - there are "needy" people who do this exact same thing. They flip items too for profit. If nobody should do it, then those people would be denied money too. I've seen items in Goodwill that honestly weren't worth the price they were selling for, the condition wasn't worth it. Then theres gems that could help someone pay their bills if they resold them. If someone spends $20 in there and makes some money, why be mad at them about it? There's still a whole store full of things for people, and theyre still able to get the things they need. Don't knock something until you've had to do it just to survive. It isn't black and white.

    It's only worth what you can sell it for. Just because someone has something listed at a certain price doesn't mean that's what it sells for. I remember collecting nes and snes games and I would see sealed Mario 3 and Zelda cartridges that people would try to get thousands for. eBay and smart phones ruined most the great finds as people would just look up their own items and think they have gold when in fact it's barely copper.

    i think "flipping" is used a little too loosely here. flipping stuff isn't just wholesale on a smaller scale; it's restoring defective items into a working or like new state. your price (and therefore profit) is based on the time and/or money spent restoring it, not just the highest amount you can get.
