  • I had the absolute privilege yesterday of playing a Steinway D in the rehearsal space at the local Steinway store. In an attempt to create a community of musicians, the store opens up their recital hall to students to play on their grand pianos. It's an excellent opportunity to grow as a musician and begin to network with others.
Steinway recognizes that their instruments aren't necessarily "the cheapest" things around, and enabling the rehearsal space satisfies the yearn of the instruments' need to be played while gratifying students (such as myself).
It was an amazing experience, and after nearly 45 minutes of nervously bumbling my way through some warm-up exercise and attempts at Joe Hisaishi "easy" Studio Ghibli songs, I worked on my repertoire.
While Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is certainly not the easiest piece for a beginner such as myself, punching well above my weight in musical terms really pushes and forces development of my abilities. Under the tutelage of my piano teacher, I'm encouraged to keep pushing myself while being open to guidance on improving technique. As much as I would like to simply "memorize" a piece, I need to understand it. For this piece, the understanding was how Beethoven would compose songs for an orchestra and create layers and that could be reflected here. The left hand (bass) would be the cello, the right hand 8th note pattern would be a viola or violin (alto) and the pinky melody (soprano) would be a clarinet. Separate the layers, focus that there are three, and the piece comes together. And wrists! Circling and loosening my wrists helps the musicality flow!
I had not posted any videos over summer mainly due to my determination to only post perfect (to me) results. Note the imperfections captured at the end of this video. Such demand for perfection is detrimental to my progress, and encourages me to memorize a piece rather than play a piece. I've watched some of my videos from early this year and can now spot things I didn't notice at the time! That's progress, and the whole point of my channel. I also didn't want to fuss over the equipment setup as that is realm of video logs I wish not to explore. The piece today was captured on my very old mobile phone, but it's a point in time I'd like to remember (and share).
    Thanks for watching :)
