In this episode, I find out how difficult the Salmon Ladder is from the TV show Ninja Warrior. The Salmon Ladder is a 2nd stage obstacle and has become a staple on the show. It's success rate averages around 60-70%. There are many variations but usually the goal is anywhere between 4 and 7 rungs. I set my milestone at 7 rungs. The movement is similar to muscle ups and pull up but requires a significantly stronger grip.
Thanks to www.primalgym.co.uk for allowing me to try this out and film. Go check them out if you are in the area (Edinburgh).
Special thanks to Calum Connelly on this one for his expertise and showing me the ropes.

Most people can't. He is short and muscular. Both being necessary to do this. If a tall person wants to do this they need to get either unreasonably swoll or have really strong arms and thin body.
@Pixel Pixel There’s a difference between a pull up and the salmon ladder though innit. Also say you’re relatively tall, say 6 foot 2 and weigh like 70kg, (154lbs), if you don’t exercise at all then you would probably struggle to do one yanno.
@Pixel Pixel I'm 185 cm and 92kg I can easily do ten pull-ups. This salmon ladder bullshit is impossible for me though. I could do pull-ups even when I was 112 kg. Salmon ladder and pull-ups require totally different amounts of strength in relation to bodyweight.

Backflip
I love his channel but I disagree with his statement that his towel training sessions didn't help. Even though he only showed us a few clips of his second attempt at the gym, I noticed he failed, not because of a lack of grip strength, but because he kept on getting the bar on two different surfaces. Even when it was uneven, he was able to hold on, when previously he wasn't able to hold on when it was straight.
Not to mention only two sessions will make no noticeable difference.
@@DaddyHackAthletics it might if you're untrained in a particular area, especially with muscle fiber recruitment. all I know is that I'm going to start doing commando pullups with the towel. seems like a good idea
Berenger Christy Honestly the less trained you are, the bigger difference two sessions will make, as the initial gains you make with a certain set of muscles will be their biggest leap; even so, though, 2 sessions will not give anyone a leap in performance.
@@DaddyHackAthletics you just contradicted yourself in one comment. well done. but you can make improvements between training sessions: that's kind of the whole point. I know I consistently do
NSFL Network wait do you share an account or something? Like Berenger said, you completely contradicted yourself.
for anyone interested here is my training program:
ONCE a week I did about 40 mins pull up training. First with the towel. When I got tired I moved to regular pull ups and I finished with dead hangs for as long as I could. I'm not sure if this is the best way to train but I certainly noticed the difference and it's pretty easy to train just 40 mins a week.
Now on to the rest of the Ninja Warrior course...

Following up on my recent comment on your Devil's steps video, economy of motion is once again super important. The reason so many people have trouble with this obstacle is because even though many of the people who run the course have the strength to do an obstacle like this, they spend way too much of their already depleting energy on large yet inefficient movements to try to get the bar up the ladder. I don't know whether you did this intuitively or if one of the trainers at the facility taught you this but your technique was rock solid for having just started learning. You weren't doing any large swinging or wasting any time between rungs. Very cool stuff Mike, can't wait to see you attempt more ninja obstacles in the future.

Try to become ambidextrous, writing, throwing, etc.
@memnok magee Wait a minute
@memnok magee weird flex but ok
Yes!!!
I am ambidextrous and it’s a great skill
It’s not truly becoming ambidextrous though. You are just practicing and becoming more precise with your less dominant hand. You have to be born ambidextrous. In a situation requiring a lot of skill or precision you will go back to using your dominant hand. Perhaps you might be able to train a very young child as they have a lot of plasticity. In order for an adult to become truly “ambidextrous” you might really have to give up your dominant hand so your brain restructures or undergoes neurogenesis or something. I know what you’re saying is not for him to become truly ambidextrous but to just like write really well with his left hand, but anybody can train themselves to do that. I studied this in AP Psych but I kinda forgot a lot. A fun fact though, even infants have a preferred hand for grabbing stuff

This is great. I love this video.
Here's some tips on the salmon ladder:
1. You could use a cross grip (where one hand is facing towards you and one away) to make the bar not spin as much which is more efficient and conserves grip.
2. You could incorpeorate clap pullups into your workout to not only increase power, but the overall technique and endurance.
3. This one isn't a tip but I think your next goal should be going down or skipping a rung.
I hope this helps if you are going to train more with it. I have been watching you for a while now. You have really encouraged me to learn more and I hope you take my advice.
Turtle Person mixed grip isn’t the best for salmon ladder as you have to pull back and throw the bar up it’s not efficient
@@thief5191 What do you mean? Have you ever even done the salmon ladder? The cross grip might take a little bit more technique but it is a very efficient way to traverse the salmon ladder. It helps a lot because it does not rotate to the weak part of your grip so it works most efficiently on a bigger bars (the ones you can't wrap your whole hand around).
Yes I have done it before and personally the way you use momentum and throw your body weight the mixed grip off balances your body weight and when you place to bar to the one above it causes the problem where you have one side make it and the other one falling depending on your dominant hand and which hand you place as the back hand
@@thief5191 I would say that would only happen if you are inexperienced. I did say it requires more technique than they usual way but it is more efficient.
