After a thief stole my bike, I was able to track him down and share his location with the police. All possible thanks to the AirTag underneath my seat. There's been a lot of bad press about AirTags lately, but I think this video demonstrates how AirTags can also do good for the community!

Loved to hear the German Police act so efficently - their conversation afterwards was stern yet respectful. He was told what he did wrong, like a father pointing out mistakes to his child. The man stole your bike, he should be punished by helping himself solve his life's problems causing him to make that wrong decision in the first place.

They get physical very quick. That's very dump
Like you scream once Police and then tackle the guy and break his bones, wth? You have a car and he's on a bike, you're gonna catch him either way. He just didn't notice that he was spoken to. I live in Germany and this is not a single case. They are very physical and therefore not professional at all

What a story! At the beginning I was surprised no one took the unlocked bike for weeks! But when I think about the statistic, that hundreds of bike are stolen in Düsseldorf each day, I guess the better explanation would be that real professional/semi-professional bike thefts would consider that bike not steal-worthy, and even a bait to lure them to bite. So I think that's why it can survive so long.

As an American the most shocking part of this is that police actually showed up to help. If you call the cops in the US and tell then someone stole your bike you can basically assume they're never showing up, regardless of how much evidence you have.
In fact in the US the operator would probably say police are on the way and then they'd be a no-show.

Just in case you're not feeling paranoid enough, have you considered that the thief coming up to you asking for a cigarette might not have been a coincidence? It's very possible he was outside the store when you pulled up on your bike and saw you get off & go in without locking it, then ran up took it right there. Then, later that night when he was out drinking with his mates he might have seen you on the far corner and wondered if you were the guy he saw get off the bike he stole, and if you might be stalking him somehow. So he goes up to you for a closer look, to see how you react or something, but apparently decides you're not the same guy for some reason (like a combination of you keeping cool & not getting freaked out, him being drunk and I'm also going to speculate perhaps not the brightest guy to begin with).

Thanks for sharing your story! Hope more thiefs get a lesson.
I just dont know why people steel things from others...
Imagine how fantastic the world would be if we have not to lock our things anywhere. :)
I live in a small village in germany, and here its not a problem to not lock anything.
My bike just stands the whole year without locking infront of my door. ^^
But I still got my bike stolen 3 times. All 3 times was in the next big City and all 3 times I locked my bike....

  • @VoidHalo

As annoying and sometimes even upsetting as having something stolen can be, you may take solace in the fact that with the sort of flippant attitude with being a thief, it's only a matter of time before they get caught. Between the risk of making a mistake, or just getting too cocky it's only a matter of time for these people. And the reasons why they steal usually stem from having a pretty miserable life.
There was this guy in high school who stole my gameboy color and all of my games for it. Because that woulda been worth TONS in 1999. And I still resent the act to this day, for many more reasons than just the monetary value. But either way, I decided to look him up a few years ago and found out he got addicted to fentanyl and was arrested on some drugs charges that made the papers. I guess when the cops were chasing him, he ran up a tree, then snorted all of his fentanyl and fell out, then the cops arrested him while he was on the ground.
So you've just gotta trust that karma, luck, justice, God, or whatever you wanna call it will come full circle and these people will eventually get a fate much worse than anything you could ever do to them. Whether you take solace in that or not though, that's probably going to be different for everyone. I personally don't take pleasure in somebody suffering THAT bad. I just hope he was able to get better in jail and turn his life around. I think that would give me more pleasure than anything.

Hey! You have to be informed that we do have a felony in Germany called "Anstiftung" (§ 26 StGB).
It means, even if you only try to incite someone to commit a felony, you are committing a felony yourself!
