- The World's Biggest Airport - New Istanbul Airport is fully operational from 6th April 2019. All existing flight operations from current Ataturk Airport will be moved to the new Istanbul Airport.
Let's take a quick peek inside the new Istanbul Airport. The airport took just 42 months to build and represent over 10 billion Euros of investment. Once fully complete it will have capacity for 200 million passengers annually.

Join us for a first glimpse and tour of the brand new, lavish Istanbul airport, which has now replaced Istanbul Ataturk airport as the airport in Turkey for the processing of all commercial passenger flights, leaving the Istanbul Ataturk airport processing mainly only cargo flights.
The new Istanbul airport is situated on the European side of the city in the Arnavutkoy district of Istanbul and is the third international airport to be built in Istanbul. The first stage of the airport’s construction, which has now been completed, has seen the creation of the airport’s main terminal which is now officially the world’s largest airport building under a single roof, spread over a colossal area of a mind boggling 1.4 million square meters.
The airport is expected to handle and process 90 million passengers a year to start with in its current form but there are very ambitious plans to make the airport considerably larger - at the second stage of development, there are plans to add a third independent runway to the airport and the third stage will involve adding a second passenger terminal with a capacity for 60 million more passengers a year, bringing the airport’s capacity to 150 million people per annum and adding a fourth runway.
The final stage of development will involve bringing the number of runways to six and adding satellite terminals providing an extra 50 million passengers a year capacity, bringing the airport to its maximum and fully developed capacity of 200 million passengers a year.
Completion of the airport in its entirety is expected to be finished in 2027, at a cost of 10.2 billion euros. In the end, the airport will have four terminal buildings, interconnected with specially built railway access and will be spread over 3.2 million square meters, with a 6.5 million square meter apron consisting of aeroplane parking for 500 aircraft, VIP lounges, parking for 70,000 cars and even a state palace! It really is an extremely ambitious project and will provide a world-renowned airport for Turkish airlines and other airlines to travel to and from.
In this video, we meet Stephan Schwolgin and also Imbat Boyar, customer experience manager of the airport, for additional insights in to the world’s largest airport and see the 566 check in counters and 228 passport control points, all waiting for the flood of passengers to come. The airport is truly a colossus - it would take you eighteen minutes to walk from end to end of the main terminal building.

Congratulations Turkey from Australia. I have visited Turkey several times via Ataturk airport which was good also. Getting through passport control was often a challenge however with the new airport having so many extra windows hopefully this problem will no longer be a problem. As soon as this Covid-19 virus is beaten and we can travel safely once more, I will return. Istanbul is truly my favourite holiday destination.

Unemployment is a worldwide issue but i think that with the new airport a lot of people are working and it's a start for a country. In Germany the BER isnt even ready after 10+ years of construction. And Istanbul managed to build his new airport in 42 month
It was completed in 2011 after five years of construction but couldn't be opened due to failed smoke evacuation test. That uncovered massive corruption within city and state government agencies and incompetency, which required extensive renovation to the infrastructure inside the terminal. The earliest opening date is probably 2021. Or never...
Berlin Airport is really a scandal. It is so untypical for Germany that most Germans cannot comprehend how such a fiasco came about. So on that issue you are right Istanbul Airport is by comparison (even with or without the alleged scandals) a major accomplishment and it will no doubt be an amazing achievement. Whether or not they built it quicker than Berlin is really irrelevant just as irrelevant as a comment like "Berlin built an underground when people in Istanbul were still using donkeys as a means of transport"

I was there last week, rather liked it. Nicer than Dubai; I might start using Turkish Airlines for flights to Asia from London. Apart from the Qatar T4 business lounge at Heathrow I had the best meal in an airport I can remember (and was in a regular restaurant not a business lounge)

They have so many accomplishments in education, manufacturing, and much more. Hats off to the Turkish people. Turkish Airlines has been one of the best airlines in the world for the last 30 years. Turkey was a country that produced and sold aircraft 100 years ago. Education in Turkey has always been at the highest level. No country can reach this level in just 20 years. Turkey has always been a deep-rooted and strong country with a past. Turkey has become very bad in the last 10 years and the reason for this is that it has received nearly 20 million refugees. As the population increases, the quality decreases.

I will never have a transit at this airport. In 2012 I was traveling from Maldives to canada and we had a transit in this airport. When we have exited the plane my husband and my son had to go to the washroom I went to sit on a bench, the secret police officers came and started to interrogate me why I was sitting here, my destination my nationality and they even checked my passports after they guided us to exit to the waiting area for our destination. This is why I made my decision that I will never fly or have a transit in this airport or Turkey because your police are racist.
