Beach Bomber Fishing I’ve been living here in Galveston for the last 20 years. Every summer I hear about deaths out there pls ppl think twice this video should be shared widely this summer is just kicking off we can help change those numbers!
It’s a scary place at night. You never feel alone there. Always feels like someone is walking up behind you. It’s sad that so many people have lost their lives there. I couldn’t believe how many people were wading when trout were running a couple months ago.
TheJohnberger I was there a night ago and the fog was extremely thick and I couldn’t help but feel like people were around me it was such a eerie feeling
Hospital chaplain in Lake Jackson. Have had to attend to several folks involved in drownings/attempted rescues. This is a great video alerting the public. I hope folks pay attention. The ocean doesn't care if it eats you. You are right to call this place dangerous.
My dad and I went night fishing there when I was around the same age and we were in water a little over our ankles and we were having a hard time because the current was so strong. That was in 1984 and it looks more dangerous now. There is a lot less beach where we were then. We were on the bay side.
I've caught tons of flounder at the pass, best spots are the pilings that support the bridge. It was in the 60's when the bridge was built there, there was a gentleman that lived there that everyone called Rooster (he kept chickens), I think his real name was Collins but not sure any more. That was a good place to get stuck on the beach, you could always go get Rooster and he would take his tractor and pull you out, he would never take money for it that's the way people were back then. I pulled a man out of the water there one time, he lived, I pulled a woman out in the mid 70's, she was life-flighted to Galveston where she later died. If you have to fight the sand braking from under your feet the best thing is get down on all four and crawl as fast as you can, come up for air and keep crawling, forget about your fishing gear it's going to drown.
Thank you for using some of your time to warn others of this very dangerous place. My Uncle James drowned out there when I was a baby. The current took him under and he never resurfaced, so I was told. So, thank you for sharing your knowledge and warning others.
Awesome video, it’s very informative and you do a great job narrating it. I saved three peoples lives whose boat over turned in the delta. It took the coast guard, the sheriffs department, the fire department, a rescue team and the DPS from 5pm till 3am to find all three people.
that was my fishing spot 2016-2019. I flipped my kayak in shark alley and lost my Hobie chair during the yard sale. I was lucky to be rescued. great spot. PB redfish, trout, and flounder. It’s ever changing. Very deadly. I think your analysis is spot on and you have great footage. Keep up the good work.
Been fishing the San Luis pass on my boat for 10 years. In the middle the depth is 20ft I’ve never seen it deeper than 25ft. A lot of the pass is 15ft-20
I fish there alot recently. Police say stay out of the water or a fine, but I see people every weekend done there in the water and even small children swimming where its posted no swimming or wading. I fish the surf area along the beach and let me tell you... when wading out to cast big baits there are swift currents under the water especially where the first waves break. You may think that water is only knee deep but the first gut is 5ft deep at even low tide and deep holes are everywhere. Its dangerous. Cause once you hit by a big wave and knocked sideways you can be carried into currents faster than you can stand back up especially if your trying to hang on to a 15ft surf rod. Never wear waders. its a death trap.
I got sucked out into a rip current as a kid. I felt the sand rushing out from my feet and the water kept picking me up. Reading your comment made my anxiety shoot through the roof. Be careful!
I just started fishing in Galveston a lot lately and the pass is one of the first places I went to with a buddy, we got in the water to cast and let me tell you that current was strong as fuck and sand is always moving from under your feet. We stayed for about 30-45 minutes before deciding the current was just to crazy and decided to go fish the north jetti and crystal Beach instead. We did pull in a decent shark when we retrieved our lines, could barely feel him fighting because of the current. We’ve been catching big reds over on the crystal Beach side though!
The pass is getting smaller yet! When I was a kid, the pass was as wide as the bridge. The water went all the way to the toll booth. I have seen it get smaller and smaller over the years. There is never a reason to get wet there. You can catch plenty of fish casting from the sand. I have been in ankle deep water in the surf about a mile from the pass and had a hard time standing! I knew someone who used to fish the pier there and he told me he saw an entire family drown - One was trying to save the other. That is a very very dangerous place! Thanks for sharing this important video! Keep up the good work!
Wow, the water used to be to the tollbooth lol? I remember looking at some old depth charts from 1853, pass looked very different. Do you happen to know Dr. Richard Watson?
I go allot during the summer, I stay on the Galveston side and will usually wade out to only my knees or mid thigh. Even that shallow there is times you can feel the sand moving from under your feet, I’ve seen people out there in water up to there chest and practically swimming in it which always makes me think what are they doing. Stay safe everyone and great video
After research from USCG, GPS nautical charts and other readings the pass is about 40 feet deep give or take a few feet for tidal changes. Hope this helps. Great video and analysis. And yes very dangerous area. There have been about 10 drownings from 2001-2013 in that area.
Very informative video. Here in Corpus about a week ago another person passed away swimming by Bob Hall Pier, the water can be very dangerous and no one should take it lightly.
I remember the KOA around the corner on the West side of the bridge. It went belly up after Alicia hit in 83, never recovered. But there was always a place to launch your boat for fishing around the area. Haven't been fishing in years, so I don't know if that boat launch is gone or not
I just fished there in a $350 sit on top pelican kayak. Caught a bunch of croaker. It looked exactly like this, I even fished the "drop" right by the bridge. I was yakking through the bridge and the current drifted me through it and I would repeat. A pilot whale breached right next to me and I shit myself almost. I realize now how dumb I am.
Great footage and explaining. Ive been going to the Pass the past 30yrs and always been known for its riptibes. Only seems to be getting worse a and the land changes over time. Sad how many out of towners come down to this spot and have ended up drowning etc. You definately have to respect this area a lot more than the reguar beach due to the riptides and structural change over time.
Dude I fished the bay side back toward houses and was still super surprised and concerned how bad the current is that far away. We were wading and started to hit deep guts with major sweeping current. Pretty crazy, great video.
That's why I dont wade back there, especially by follets island. I'll bank fish the Galveston bay side of the pass and back into west bay. I never actually get in the water. Glad you didnt get into a deadly bind man!
5 years ago we were fishing the surfside of the pass in a 13ft whaler we were anchored up on the sand bar casting into the channel during mid tide so not to much current very good water conditions almost clear and we saw a hammer head shark swim under the boat and no doubt he was at least 2 feet longer. The channel is about 20-25 deepest spot we’ve found.
Good stuff brother hope this gets out there and everyone spreads the word of how dangerous this place is. Once again good video and thanks for sharing this important topic in the Texas coast 🤙👍

Back in the 70s when my dad was a teen, he was walking along the beach at SLP probably about calf-deep. He said he suddenly just disappeared under the water like walking into a manhole. The same thing happened to me there (once in 83' - I learned). I was standing in belly deep water and the bottom just disappeared from underneath me. It was an outgoing tide and I got a little to far out, which wasn't very far, but an example of how the sand literally shifts with the tide, and it can pull you out just like the sand. Looks different today in 2022. The Galveston side has a huge fishing beach when the tides are down. Another danger added is a lot of people drive on and it is beginning to change. Sandbars come and go but the Galveston side beach looks so inviting!
Great video, hopefully someday to fish the pass. Tried to get depths on my Navionics hell they had depths of 2’ guts where you can see a solid bar? That’s pretty bad when they don’t even know!
I went out here today and threw some big spoons. The wind was 20+kt, the current was crazy strong, and the tide rushed in faster than Ive ever seen anywhere. Beautiful, strange, and dangerous af place bro.. I stay outta that water.
Went out there last month. On the freeport side we saw 30 ft deep. Water was only a couple feet in the middle and we had to get out and push the boat. Really sketchy around the bridge.
wow that new sandbar is insane. really hope people stay out of the water. looks like the drive out is pretty smooth compared to how it sometimes is though. Always love to fish San Luis pass, on a calm day when the current doesn't swing my bait right back down the shore lol
Back around 1981, a black friend of mine came into work with a beauty of a trout and put it in the freezer. I asked him where he got it and he said he was wading the surf at San Luis Pass using mirror lures. I asked him to take me and within a week I had my fishing vest and African Safari hat to hold my lures and we were going fishing. The time was very early in the morning in May and it was squally with rain cells roaming around. My buddy was 6' and I am only 5'8" and we had to get to the third sandbar which luckily I was able to fish by jumping a little when the bigger waves came in. There were a lot of guys lined up out there and everybody was catching nice size trout. My buddy had an Ambassador 5000 and I saw him get a little backlash and he turned his back to the waves to take care of it. I was concentrating on fishing but I heard a noise and looked around to see my buddy's hat floating and he was in a panic with the fishing pole in his mouth. I took a step towards him and he pulled the pole out of his mouth and screamed "No, don't move - there is an undertow". Well just as he said that my feet both got pulled out from underneath me and away I go. We were wearing fishing vests but no waders and so we were not panicking, just floating on our backs, feet in front of us and we just tried moving closer to shore. We finally got to the bank maybe 50 yards from the bridge and we had started out about 1000 yards from the bridge. We got out of the water and my buddy had lost the inside of his reel and his glasses. We stayed a little while hoping maybe something would wash up but nothing ever did. We started walking back towards the car just about the time an ambulance was crossing the bridge coming from the Freeport side. As we got closer, people were gathering closer to the water and we walked up to someone and asked what was going on. The guy said "There was a black guy and a white guy out there fishing and the undertow took them away". My buddy and I looked at one another and said "We can't say it was us, there may have been another black and white guy fishing that had the same problem". So, we got in our car and sped away....
Excellent video bro. I will say, it looks like you are accessing SLP from the Galveston side. It's much less of a sketch drive getting there from the Follet's Island side.
Great video! I’ve anchored up about 70 yards off of the point of the RV camp and it was 30 feet deep there. I noticed there are some under water humps towards the bridge just on the edge of the channel ranging from 10 to 15 feet deep. I have no idea how deep the actual channel does get.
Thank you so much for your explanation , details on everything , I'm glad I saw this video , well I was thinking of going with my family and kids In a week from now , it's been more than 25 yrs i went to san Luis pass , and it's completely changed I'm so surprised seeing this video , thank you for sharing 👌👌 , I'm sure we all go to Galveston but different place....🐟
Some spots are very shallow on the backside it's hard to get to the pass from the bay on a boat unless you have a trail marked lol right under the bridge in the center I believe was like 8-10ft around the bridge
Such a cool video... I fish here when I come down and have seen all the different shorelines since the 90's... there are definitely tides and shifting shoreline
I haven’t taken my boat to the pass in awhile because it is very shallow on the bay side. If I remember correctly, it’s about 8-12 feet deep under the bridge. Further out on the ocean side it’s like 6 feet deep between sandbars.
Be careful, the sand has been very soft. The county filled in some deep holes, but the sand was still soft. It might have hardened up after the storms though, not sure.
Great video, almost a "public alert" warning of sorts. Square waves are at 90 degrees to each other, not 45 degrees, and your video showed them very clearly. Wow! No place to wade that is for sure. More signs, more warnings needed I think. Thanks!!!
Oops, error, thanks for the correction! Duh, square angles 90°. Unfortunately theres a small percentage of the population that dont read the signs. I made this video to reach out to people and warn them. Thanks for watching!
Dont know if 16-18ft is deep but thats what my depth finder at the center of the pass, on the surfside side coming from the gulf that side is shallow 2-5ft and it extends out a good way into the (galveston beach) gulf then theres a drop 10-15ft. So both sides of this bar theres deep drops along with the tides incoming out going colliding. You get a washasmachine!! On heavy load setting! Ive been out there in waist deep on kayak and small bay boat and it can get sketchy.
I’ve done some floundering around the pass , bay side .....that place is dangerous and at night ..wow . When in doubt avoid it lots of better / safer places to fish
That little bay that formed on the Galveston side is likely a good spot to put a yak in, but whoo boy you better have your life jacket on. Just looks like a lot of current flowing around that point.
My sister and brother-in-law watched his grandfather and father get swept away and both drowned like 5 years ago right there at the Pass. They were fishing in maybe waist-deep water from what I understand. It was really messed up.
You don’t need a 4x4 to get through soft sand I went through it with no problem in a 2000 Chevy Tahoe 2wd/rwd with the right speed, you will make it fine
@@BeachBomberFishing indeed. I was there. When it got dark I left. The next morning tide had taken it where it sat. I tried to pull it up but it was filled with sand.

Great question, I have no idea tbh.
Those pylons are driven probably 30-40 feet down
There are bridges in areas with much stronger tides and much deeper water such as the Golden Gate.
Concrete sets even when underwater. And like was mentioned, piles were driven very deep below the surface.
If they had built a fishing pier along side the bridge they could have paid for the bridge.

What a story! I'm glad you both made it safely to shore! 😊
This is a GREAT video!!!
Thanks man! I want to map out the whole area.
Such a cool video... I fish here when I come down and have seen all the different shorelines since the 90's... there are definitely tides and shifting shoreline
I love San Luis pass,I been visiting that place for almost 20 years
I haven’t taken my boat to the pass in awhile because it is very shallow on the bay side. If I remember correctly, it’s about 8-12 feet deep under the bridge. Further out on the ocean side it’s like 6 feet deep between sandbars.
i got stuck a couple of weeks ago in a 4WD and the turn off before the bridge.
Damn that sucks man! Theres another way in that seems pretty smooth. It's on the right side of the bridge by the bay.
Has anyone been this year? I'm going that way this weekend and was thinking about having a go at it.
@@BeachBomberFishing So correct. Way too many drownings there. Too easy to get in bad trouble.
We live a few miles from there and love walking the beach but never get in the water.
It's a beautiful place
Dont know if 16-18ft is deep but thats what my depth finder at the center of the pass, on the surfside side coming from the gulf that side is shallow 2-5ft and it extends out a good way into the (galveston beach) gulf then theres a drop 10-15ft. So both sides of this bar theres deep drops along with the tides incoming out going colliding. You get a washasmachine!! On heavy load setting! Ive been out there in waist deep on kayak and small bay boat and it can get sketchy.
yea....your right guy, its a deadly pass.... I've seen quite a few folks who got stuck in the water and had to be rescued...
I stalled my Jeep in like 4 feet of water in San Luis lol I went fishing was out there all day on my way back the route through the dunes was flooded.
Bad ass video bro!
Thanks man!
I went over the San Luis pass in March 2020. It still looked like the 2018 pictures in the video.
Really? Man, I need to do another fly over.
@@BeachBomberFishing Harvey probably made it a mess. But in time in can settle back down. Plus not sure if they did any dredging.
I’ve done some floundering around the pass , bay side .....that place is dangerous and at night ..wow . When in doubt avoid it lots of better / safer places to fish
My dad is going to have his boat out there at the RV park on the Freeport side of San Luis Pass. I will see if he can get a depth reading for you
That would be sick!!
I have a screen shoot for you
Steven Scheck how deep was it?
@@berniemac8413 he said around 18ft
Steven Scheck ah, interesting. I thought it would be deeper.
That little bay that formed on the Galveston side is likely a good spot to put a yak in, but whoo boy you better have your life jacket on. Just looks like a lot of current flowing around that point.
Love this video! I’m going to go check this place out.
Thanks for the info, Great advice.
My sister and brother-in-law watched his grandfather and father get swept away and both drowned like 5 years ago right there at the Pass. They were fishing in maybe waist-deep water from what I understand. It was really messed up.
Haven’t been fishing St Luis pass this year just bc it’s gotten really sketchy lately
It's sketchy af down there man. It's gotten harder to fish due to seaweed.
You don’t need a 4x4 to get through soft sand I went through it with no problem in a 2000 Chevy Tahoe 2wd/rwd with the right speed, you will make it fine
I understand, I used to get back there in a Chevy cobalt. I have to give the safest tips possible on video though.
I see in your flyby that darn tent someone left 2 weekends ago is still laying there in the surf filled with water and sand.
Is that what that was? I didnt even see it. Smh, people are so trashy!
@@BeachBomberFishing indeed. I was there. When it got dark I left. The next morning tide had taken it where it sat. I tried to pull it up but it was filled with sand.
That’s a great video bro 👍🏼
This place looks absolutely terrifying!!
Square waves are dangerous!! You'll still have those people that think they're invincible..
You bout to blow wit dis one bro ☝🏽💯 #Gcounty
Give me a hand and share bro please! Thanks man!
Very good fishing back in the day when the pier was up. I saw alot amazing fish caught off that pier. Alot of stories of what I caught and what I have seen other people caught you wouldn't believe it if I told you. Shout out to "Cotton"
Hey you have any new updates or videos on SLP? Haven’t been in over 2 years. And watching this video never seen it like that, even when high tide comes in. Def has changed at a rapid pace.
Great Video! Did you ever get the depth info?
I finally did
@@BeachBomberFishing How deep is the drop off?
Love the video. Keep warning them. It has changed every year. Always remember my first visit. Now I launch my yak and send it!!!!!
Is it good to fish the riptide?
Bolivar was on fire with bull reds today
Quick question? Is the San Luis Pass subdivision a safe beach?
Nothing in that area is safe, I wouldn't swim in that water within a mile radius.
the avg weight of a car built after 1990 is not 2000 lbs, it is 3600+. HUGE difference.
Good video either way.
Awesome video! What's the song used in the background?
Going by what I've learned from watching this video...…...we must eat the babies.
🤣💀
Nice view I love it
Yo what about shirts? Would really like to get a “ anti social fishing club” shirt. Lmk
Christopher Lopez... Need some shirts to go with my stickers bro
Working on them right now bro!
Yes shirts! They will help give an extra 15 yards in my cast 🙌🏽
Antonio Lopez shirts AND stickers. They stack. Get an extra 30 yards on the cast.
Retire the word "homeboy" and your life will be better. Try using friend instead. You won't regret it and your "homeboys" won't even notice.
Your curiosity about the pass is awesome.
I have been wade fishing SLP since 1992 & it changes every year. Learn the wave patterns & KEEP YOUR CHILDREN OF THE WATER EVEN JUST A FOOT DEEP. The square wave pattern pen on the flat behind bird island on stron current day’s. N that we day’s fish the flat...
Appreciate it brother! 🤘
Try the deeper sonar no boat necessary great for bank fishing
That's a great idea, but very expensive.
I miss the fishing pier. I hear there are no plans to replace it.
The Navionics App has depths and sonar charts.
Not of the whole pass.
Lol almost died when I flipped in the gut paddling a bait out in Spring 2018
Damn dude. How'd that go down how did it feel turtling in that bastard??
We spend most days fishing there and pulling people out of the sand. Also they filled in the big hole now.
My friends and I were just there over the weekend, awesome spot and was shoulder high in water
Have u been to surfside jetty lately if so what have u caught bc I’m going tm and not sure what I’m hoping for but I see calm waters 😂
Expect some jacks and mackerel.
Beach Bomber Fishing what do u use for jacks? I want a fight
Big silver spoons
they say there are 1000s of boat/ship wrecks in the pass.
No shit, I had no idea. I'm gonna have to research that.
That's so insanely dangerous!
So.. What did you catch? If the area is crazy. Imagine what lies beneath it, must have crazy fishes.
What drone are you using.
