I dont care what anyone says the motor being shown here is probably one of the best motors ever made
The best, as far as I'm concerned.
Prettiest too
"Coolest", for sure. "Best", I would say not even close.
I mean yeah they make phenomenal power but they got some valve train issues and top end reliability problems but gnarly all the same
I absolutely agree
She idles like a 12 pack of beer cans in a dryer. Wonderful sound. 😎
mgmcd1 this is the greatest description I’ve ever heard. Lol
The most american way to describe it
Facts
@@jesusm7754 In Australia, it'd be a Six pack.
It’s hilarious how accurate that is 😂
my hats off to the person that designed that linkage setup, because that's a work of art all by itself.
This engine is so badass, the GM stock owning France family of Nascar saw it and the Mopar Hemi comming and knew they had to disqualify it for their racetrack. The Chevys couldn't keep up.
Was the 67 vette with the 427 ( Chevy lies extremely on stock power by around 150 ) the fastest car you could buy from the factory that decade.
There were some Chevy 427's running in NASCAR in 67. Looking at the back of Ford 427's and Mopar 426's.
@@bbdl7042 The Chevy 427 was not in the same class as the Ford 427 sohc. The 427 sohc was banned before it could even run at Nascar so Ford went back their 427 side oiler and still kicked butt in Nascar that year,The Sohc went drag racing instead.
Them hemi heads no joke
It was banned bc it was never put in production cars had nothing to do with stock smh.
There's just something extra special about the 427 SOHC lope that is absolutely musical (forgive me, I'm a guitarist). It's the best lope of any street engine I've ever heard. Now, hearing it wind up like a small block is a whole other thing. I'm strongly craving a 427 cammer!
What a rare piece of history, love the 427 SOHC, this thing's a beast.
I swear I've seen a complete 4 cylinder block that wasn't any bigger than ONE of these monster cylinder heads!!
Yeah, woulda been a lot cooler if Chrysler wasn’t a bunch of pussies
They're still available new on the aftermarket, so not so rare... just fork over money...
@Jack Russelle Lewis cheated?
Probably one of the most beautiful looking engines I've seen.
And the BOSS 429.
I have to agree! The Cammer and the 429 Boss are two of the most beautiful engines ever built! And to put down numbers like this,
on pump gas, we're talking beauty and the beast in the same package, and this is from a Mopar guy!
You know ford did this right if a mopar guy wants one lol
50 years later and still the greatest engine ever built
Lmao 😂 you're absolutely right!
LS has probably taken that title now.
@@josephrogers4086: LS's are for sissies! lol.
An LS in this state of tune with carbs ain’t making this kind of HP.
The beautiful shape of the engine when looking at it from the front is ART. Pure metal art of the highest order.
My favorite sounding engine of all time
Don't talk to me about an Italian red car V12 sound....this is what I call an engine ! Love the idle sound when firing up.!
All gearheads should love this!! I'm not a big Ford fan, Mopars are my thing, but the Cammer is
an amazing piece of engineering!!
She's a hunny alright!!
me toom I like the cross ram race hemi but the cammer is cool
@wedge4hire - As a fellow long time Mopar guy, I gotta agree. This is a fantastic engine with elephant hemi type power. Sorry there aren't more of them out there.
@@neilreid9005 As a dyed in the wool Chrysler fan, I have to agree. This is one unreal engine, and fascinates me.
I personally own couple of old Fords & Mopars , VW beetles and wouldn’t trade that experience for $1 million bucks and yes all were stick shift .. T - 45 Hurst shifter w/ ‘71 Mach 1 , Pistol Grip shifters in ‘71 Charger RT and ‘70 Roadrunner and that good ol straight stick
that rises between the front seats in my VW beetle ( that kept me from getting lucky) , had stock and hi perf air cooled VW engines .
You be surprised when an ‘68 or ‘71 Beetle has a good cutch in it - it hauls ass lickity split ...
I've always liked the 427 SOHC. They were ahead of their time. I have seen pictures where the intake ports are about the size of a soda can. Real big!
Good ole Ford Huge Intake Ports, Just like the 4V Cleveland Heads and the 429 Cobra Jets, and Super Cobra Jets.
@badass6.0powerstroke10 the ford 427 tunnel port heads where huge also, very good cylinder heads
It's amazing how engine performance has advanced over the years. 707 hp out of Hellcat that's available in damn near every Mopar model. I'd take this noisy, lumpy, inefficient, as far as gas is concerned, beast any day. The oohs and aahs at the sight of one of these is by far more intense. Most muscleheads have never even seen one of these other than in a magazine or a dream.
707 out of Hellcat?Pro stock 351 Clevelands were making 750 hp na back in the late seventies and early eighties on the dragstrip.Bob Glidden ,Gapp and Roush Etc.As for hp ,i suggest you look at turbo six cylinder ford engines here in Australia. It will shock you.
Most gear heads under 50 never heard of or seen one!
@@petergiannaros9037 Ford 427 SOHC can be built to have over 1000 hp. Stock, they were rated at 650+ hp. Realistically, it was near 850 hp.

wow! theses engines still amaze me....seems like pretty high tech stuff for when they were produced. I'm not the biggest Ford guy but I'd still give my left nut to have one! lol
Hemi killer !!!...oh and how those MOPAR guys hated it !.
i agree, being a ford/dodge person, but,,i can buy a hemi now,..best thing chev ever put out was the later LS series.there actually a proper built engine.FINALLY..takes a while to wake up i suppose..
I am a Mopar guy and gotta tell ya...you can't hate something that never existed. Can't consider a half dozen or so hand built outside the factory to be production for anything so basically these are just aftermarket engines that nobody wanted . And while these mythical monsters did make some HP...I read they were engineering night mares as far as the valve gear and the 20 foot long timing chains went and were said to have not been able handle a 500 mile NASCAR race. The way I see it , if these cammer things were so great, then Ford engines would be powering ALL top fuel cars for the last 50 years. We all know where that went...can you say HEMI???
@@bultacowally The chain was 6', not 20'! Pete Jackson, I think his name was, built a gear drive to replace the chain. Ford developed this engine for NASCAR racing, to compete with the hemi. NASCAR knew these engines were going to be too fast for safety on their tracks. So they banned both engines. After that Ford quit on the engine, even though the likes of Dyno Don, Don Prudrohme & others were racing the engines in NHRA. The guys that were using it in T/F ended up switching to other engines. While in use, they were very competitive! Too bad Ford quit on this remarkable engine. With Pete developing that gear drive, who knows how dependable it would've been? Things might've changed...a lot in NHRA!
> oh and how those MOPAR guys hated it !.
I'm a MOPAR guy, and I love it. It's a brilliant design intended to do one thing, make effortless power. It would have made NASCAR the competition it was meant to be.
No matter which brand you prefer, if you’re a gear head and like horsepower this is definitely an icon. Too bad that there weren’t that many of these engines produced.
They say less than 500 ever made.
Rare beast.
427 SOHC Cammer 40 years ahead of its time..
Who would’ve thought a 657 hp stock big block would be underrated by so much!
This engine doesn't sound like a pump gas engine. It sound like a pro stocker. Nasty! I love it!
Horsepower is impressive, but the torque is awesome.
Awesome! One of the BEST engines Ford ever made!
Man, this engine looks and sounds beautiful.
The king of crate motors -circa 1964-1966! Awesome
1966 - current
I would argue 67-73. That’s when the golden years of this motor were. After that, the Hemi’s aftermarket caught up. If they had made an aftermarket block for this, it would be 67-current.
I'm a Chevy guy but those are some of the most beatful engines ever built . Enjoyed your video . Beautiful sound too . I own an engine machine shop here in Alabama . We get to do some really cool engines , one of my recent builds was a 427 Super Cobra Jet .
that sound, its like angels singing in harmony.
Impressive! Great numbers without forced induction!
I had an eargasm! Several of them. Replaying a legendary internal combustion lullaby over & over & ...
Ear porn for hot rodders. Nothing like an early firing pattern ford to just make you smile.
Gotta love that ear porn, I could listen to that for hours
This and the boss 9 motor are two of the most beautiful motors ever designed.
TWO TRUE !!
Loved seeing the Cammer in the 55 Chev called Payback...haha !!
Internally they certainly were.
I saw that car at Detroit Autorama
I respectfully disagree Chico, I believe the most beautiful motors ever designed were between the 426 Hemi and the 454 big block.
wonderful sounding thing could listen to that all night long surprising hp for pump gas clever build
without doubt the most beautiful motor ever made just plain awesome
Absolutely totally beastly sounding!!!!!! I love the sound of a rolling loping cam, music to my ears, and then to watch it lay down those numbers, gearhead porn!!!!!
Yup. Theres no hiding that lopey idle, like a hot babe undressing slowly you just know THIS IS GONNA BE MIND BLOWING AND THE 427 NEVER DISAPPOINTED.
The Original 427. Killing chevies and layin down beats on mopar!
Chevy introduced a 427 in 63 as well, Two different ones, the Z11 427 and the mystery motor 427 both of which were very successful. The Z11 heads were very similar to the heads used on all later BBC's. So good that they heavily influenced the design of the Cleveland heads use on the small block Boss engines.
@osp80 they made a hell of a lot more then 20,
@@deviljoint9866 they were disqualified from NASCAR due to not being released as an option in production vehicles
@@gearyharlan7729no they were banned because of the overhead cams, the hemi was also banned a yr or so later in 65,the rule for 500 factory cars came later if im not mistaken.
@osp80 If you knew what you were actually talking about it would be good.Ford made a lot more of these engines than you describe,
the great Chevy destroyer. NASCAR wouldn't even let them run it
It really did. The 427 was bad to the bone. The Mopar aerodynamics was allowed, but not the cammer. :(
Habitual Linestepper ford didnt run it because they did want to sell them
The aerodynamic Plymouth Superbird, Dodge Daytona Charger, Ford King Cobra, and Mercury Talladega were restricted to 305 cubic inch engines for 1971. All were discontinued after 1970 and the teams went back to standard sedan bodies and 426-427 engines.
Habitual Linestepper nascar said very nice get it out of here and dont bring it back
Ford had built this engine and Mopar had developed a SOHC HEMI. The super birds were averaging over 200mph so NASCAR banned both engines and went to small blocks
Beautiful piece of Ford Engineering..! I drove a 1967 White Euro head lights Galaxie that had a cammer and a top loader. It had a 4;56 rear end.. Could pull the front tires off the ground just with a quick tap of the pedal..
Did you install the cammer? Not from the factory.
Nope.. somebody built it and it wound up in a long gone consignment auto dealership Nostalgia Motors in Campbell California. this place Was owned by Ferrari of Los Gatos owner Brian Burnett
Andrew B wow I know it had power but it's impressive that u were able to hook up so well to lift the front end.
My dads 62 Ford 406 Galaxie Sunliner pulls the wheels off the ground also Chrysler, Chevrolet, and NASCAR didn't like that 1 either got banned also.
It's not the HP that will kill today's muscle it is the torq and these old SOHC'S had plenty of it and look out when ya get the tunnel port head's bolted on.
Just ask the guys running funny cars in late 60s these motors set more records NHRA then any ,great vid.
Just awsome thunder ! I was lucky enough to grow up by motown muscle met alot of cool people and got to feel some major torq of these monsters. me my self born on the day 428 SCJ was released am a true FE man got 390 w/428 scj grind cam and heads in F250 1976 pickup when its uncorked and light ta light takes the new stuff they
just scratch there heads!LOL
Where do you get your information?? Ford killed the "Tunnel-Port" program (which was for the FE & NOT the SOHC) because those heads produced less Hp & torque than the 'high-riser' FE heads.
Jersey ,I fully understand difference in SOHC and tunnel port even though two different monsters they are both FE engine ,the great part of the tunnel port was the round port with push-rod dividing it an with 2 4brl intake they worked great ,yes the SOHC worked better via higher horse and torq. as for high risers worked good to ,these heads are all different RPM range different flow rate ,they are all great and depending on what Ford was using it for which form of racing ,the HP TORQUE range very so much as only one was on standard production line that being the high riser headed FE ,and even some of those had a little mods for diff apps. ,,I have seen high rise heads with cast ## SPEC ,,stands for special cast ,,In short I love the torque of all the FE's P.S. didnt mean tunnel port was better than SOHC just it was standard looking FE .
TIM WEAVER k
TIM WEAVER Jersey about the 427 SOHC or the medium/high risers 427, the only difference in SOHC 427 is the top end, Hemispherical heads w overhead cam, the bottom ends are identical, all FE blocks from 330/332 all the way to 428 all the same block only different bore and stroke. The 406, 410 and 427 medium/high risers were all built to race lemans, these blocks inparticular had reinforced webbing on the block, reinforced main caps, reinforced webbing on rods as well as specialized rod cap bolts. These FE engines were bulletproof, I have been an FE fanatic since my early teens, I learned a lot about the racing wars in the 60s between Ford, GM and Mopar..
The 427 cammer was banned from nascar but Ford did still win moore reaces than the Chryslers by running their old sideoiler
***** not correct; Ford won manufactors championship in 63-64-65-66-67-68-69 and drivers championship in 60-63-64-65-68-69
64fairlane357 Manufacturers championship doesn't mean shit...You can win that without winning a race.
In 67 Chrysler won 36 of the 49 races that year, yet Ford somehow won the manufacturers championship???
Petty won the 64 drivers championship,
Petty & Dave Pearson both won 16 races in 1968,yet Pearson won the Championship,
Bobby Isaac won 17 races in 69,Dave Pearson only won 11...yet Pearson again won the drivers Championship????
68bobba2 Ford won more races in NASCAR between 1960 and 1970. it's in the books.
@bobba68 Also have to remember, NASCAR hated Ford for some reason, they were always on their ass about something. Ford did have one car that at around 180, became air born, lack of aerodynamics. Chrysler did do the first tunnel testing. Ford was about to make a come back with its King Cobra Super Snake Torino.
@@MrDriftonin -Nascar had it in for Chrysler(after it withdrew its factory teams),for the 65 season...It almost went broke.
Not sure if Nascar hated Ford,but...At the end of the 64 season Bill France banned the Chrysler 426,Yet was prepared to allow the Cammer to run(only with an unrealistic weight penalty...IE, ballast).
The problems Ford car you speak of had, sounds a lot like Chrysler's 68 Charger...Poor aerodynamics which created lift,at high speed.
Best engine ever made. THE G.O.A.T
I absolutely love the sound of these engines and they're also beautiful to look at!
I'm usually a GM fan but this is head and shoulders my favorite engine of all time nothing compares imwo
Still one of the most powerful N/A engines today. This in the GT40 would haul Lambo ass any day!

That kind of HP with simple carburetors.... wow
This is what I ran in the modifieds way back when. Single carb however. Then they were banned. Too brutal.
Love the sound of a BBF, an FE has that nasty sound when running a big cam
Sounds like a beast. I hear Chrysler was so scared of this engine they had NASCAR ban it. Sounds like a straight up race engine. I would love to have one in a 69 Boss Mustang.
James Sawchuk
GM really banded it, like they did Chrysler in 69-70 as the story goes. However, chassis and engines were changing so the real thing that killed it was Ford. $$$ to MFG and Family affairs cost Ford so they pulled out of domestic racing with the exception of Nascar. Too bad Nascar isn't really stock cars. I would be curious how things play out now. The Current Coyote is all Ford Cammer mated with DOHC Cosworth.
Would be interesting, indeed.
Michael Quinn where do you get cosworth and coyote/modular mixed up?
***** Hey Nick, no I mean Ford used the history of what they learned from this motor and Cosworth DFV double four valve and the Modular variants of the recent past. Combine all that and you have the Coyote motor. Best small v8 built in mass production.
I like the flat crank in the GT350. 530 NATURALLY ASPIRATED horse power.
This reminds me of hearing the V-8's they used to fire up the engines on the SR-71s.
The "Blackbirds"flew out of Kadena Air Base where I was stationed and the way we knew they were going to fly that day was when you heard those V-8s running at full throttle like that.
You could hear them clear across the base.
I don't think there was even a V-6 on the island at the time.Everyone just drove 4 cyl. cars and trucks.
Those V-8s had a distinct sound in that environment, that's for sure.
Those V8s were Buick 401 nail heads and they had no mufflers!
If FMC had released this eng in numbers, it would have changed history.
That's why it was Banned , there was no answer for the 427 Ford from chevy , dodge or chrysler so they threw a fit and whined like little bitches.
If somebody developed an aftermarket block, it would have changed history.
Never forget that RUMBLING SOUND , Copper head road , how true!
Nice way to test the build. I liked watching the guys in their garage while straddling my bike. Then maybe getting a ride to see how the car performs around the block.
That’s so close to being the perfect engine!!!!!!
plus its a damn nice motor to look at
Beautiful engine. Sounds amazing
I'm a Chrysler Hemi man, But boy do I love the Fords as well! Love the Chrysler Hemi plug wires!! Nice mill guys!!!!!!
740 bwhp naturally aspirated? That is music to my ears. Most motors need a big fat supercharger to make that power
Cactus Jack & the boys build a helluva NASCAR engine with their FR9! All aluminum and can be built to 454cid.
And at home, you can build a 460cid small-block Ford based on Ford Racing's "Boss 351W" block. 460 cubic inches that looks like a normal, itty-bitty little ol' 351W . . . SURPRISE, y'all ! ! !
Yea, maybe? But the generic motors will always dominate the big three, or four due to three simple things? Ford fanatics can't see these, fore the oval spins them in a circle that will always let them down...

Cammers seem to be the only dual quad engine that I never hear the usual "Put a single 4bbl on it and it will make more power."
Dang, that's a sweet sound! Love that idle. Come to think about it, the engine looks like the one in Jay Leno's Garage episode that featured the 67 ford Fairlane, it was built for an anonymous owner. Could this be the same engine?

This engine is a true Hemi killer
the 427 sideoiler beats a stock hemi and mod for mod boss 429
+Fire&Ice909 Apparently the Cammer also suffered from bottom end oiling problems,as well....the sideoiler block couldn't keep the oil up to it at 8,000 revs...I read that in an article about Connie Kalitta
France ALSO banned the Hemi because he didn't want Nascar turning into a pissing contest between Ford & Chrysler(who incidently had a DOHC Hemi on the drawing board)...So if the Cammer was allowed to race, the DOHC Hemi would have stomped on it.
When France banned the Hemi,Chrysler withdrew it's factory teams...and as a result,Nascar almost went broke...Something France never forgave Chrysler for.
Chrysler came out with the Street Hemi in 66,thus allowing the engine to be used in Nascar again.
NOT because France had Petty's dick in his mouth?...Don't know where you got bullshit from.
Try looking up your Nascar history.Dumbass..It almost went broke without Chrysler involved...Not just Petty alone.
Is Dodge in Nascar today?...who gives a shit?
Petty wasn't the most popular driver back in 65 when Chrysler boycotted Nascar...He didn't become the "King"until 2 years later.
Looks like someone needs to learn about Nascar...and it isn't me.
It wasn't JUST Petty...It was the Chrysler factory entries in general...you need to get your facts straight

Putting that thing on the dyno running pump gas and putting out over 740 horsepower is absolutely mind bending!!

Absolutely phenomenal!!
No wonder why the hemis were afraid of this engine.. the hemmies had nothing on this engine. Great job!!
That almost sounds like a NASCAR engine sweat man.
It was a NASCAR engine, and a top fuel dragster engine and a LeMans Prototype engine in the Ford GT-40 MK-II/IV.
It ended up causing the engine size ban at Le Mans and it was straight out banned in NASCAR because of its pure dominance in races.
The 427 Cammer was never used in the Ford GT Mk II or IV. The engine used was a regular wedge head 427. Also, the Ford GT MkII and IV are not GT40's, a nomenclature reserved for the small block (289 c.i.) engined cars...

wow imagine this thing with a blower or turbo or twin turbos??? insane
Turbos are for kids..
The Hemi head design was first done by Zora Arkus Duntov back in the thirties when Zora worked for Ford! Remember the old "Ardun" heads for the flathesd V8? the Ardun name was the first letters in Arkus Dutov.
Ford sued Chrysler over the hemi design in the fifties and won the suit! Chrysler wound up paying off the judgement by relinquishing their "Autolite" division to Ford!
Duntov went on to design the small block Chevrolet for GM after he parted ways with FOMOCO. Ford sued because there were too many design elements in the small block, and the Y block Ford. Ford wan that suit too! GM paid off by giving Ford the rights and all the tooling for an engine they designed to fit into the Nova Platform which had a front sump oil pan and distributor set up.
That my friends is how Chevrolet designed the Windsor Block Ford, and the Small Block Chevrolet was designed by a Ford Engineer!
And Ford designed the Hemi!
***** I thought it was a Belgium Co. called Pipe? in 1905. I not a big Hemi historian, but from what I have read, that was the first.
NOT TRUE, Mr Browning - Herr Diesel's first diesel engine used a hemispherical combustion chamber and also a hemispherical-headed piston as a compression-ignition engine. The "hemispherical" piston & combustion-chamber was chosen by Dr Diesel because it is the most efficient, providing the largest surface area for the pressure from the combustion event to push upon.
No they didn't design the hemi head at all:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemispherical_combustion_chamber#History
Although Hemi Heads appeared in racing cars before the Duntov heads he is probably the first one to make them for the aftermarket for a U.S. production engine, the flat-head Ford.
ronald brignoni but Chrysler took the hemi design from their radials and the sbc is nothing similar to the y block
Good GOD what a beast!!
