@1992lance I would say about 7.5 inches max since the hide hole is 8 inches wide. You could probably cut it larger if you needed but 7 inches is the largest unless you combine two of these units together which it is made to do.
@sensinarie We respectfully disagree and the wood is not treated with chemicals - we are talking about a Zoo Med product. We also would be curious as to what reference or study you might be citing that concludes that tortoises need something out of clear material. We have many customers that have had great success in these enclosures although most do take them out on a daily basis to interact with them.
A baby one yes, but as soon as past 6 inches you're going to need to either add the second unit or definitely go much bigger. Eventually you'll need very large space for a spur thigh. Call us, we have many other tortoise options that are smaller species.
I heard that part of the reason why aquariums aren't good for tortoises (aside from it being too small and seethrough walls) is the high walls aren't good for airflow. Is this an actual problem?
@4quall Agreed, this could work for Red Foot Tortoises up until they are about 5 to 6 inches but then it would be time to move them into something else. This is perfect for small species tortoises including Hermanns, Star, Russians, Greek and Box Turtles.

This is a solid wood material made from a "Hard wood" species tree (renewable resource). We're not positive on the variety of tree as Zoo Med doesn't state that.

Well unfortunately, I don't live in America. I live in Saudi Arabia, so personally, bins are waaay more accessible.

What happens if the tortoise urinates on it? Do i need to paint the wood with a non- toxic water sealer so the wood wont rot?

Hello, I recently rescued a Russian Tortoise. The current owners were unable to care for him anymore, and decided to give him away. I'm so happy I got him, he is shy and nervous because I just got him home, so I'm trying to give him some space, with that in mind, they put him in a glass aquarium, which I could tell from the second I got him would not be adequate for him. He is about 7 years old, so he is full grown, but the aquarium is much to small for him plus he is always running at the glass. I have a few question's that I would like answered about this product.
1. Is this waterproof? I mean if he pee's, poop, tips his bowl of water over etc. Will it leak?
2. Is it possible to put one piece of pexiglass in one side of the walls? I know the glass isn't good for him, but he calms down when he see's me, weird I know for a reptile, but he likes to be fed by hand etc, so I figured as long as the whole enclosure isn't like that he would be fine plus he would have a much more adequate hiding area.
3. Can you just set the lights on top of the wire? I have had many reptiles and I've gone through my rooky mistakes, one of them being you can't set your lights down on all screen/wire lids.

No, this is not appropriate for Bearded Dragons... we have much better ones in our habitats and cages section.

I have one of these for my tortoises for a few years now but my disabled grandma keeps wetting it every time she waters her garden and the wood became really weak after a while because of that and i constantly tell her not to wet it but she still does anyway and my grandmother would use it as a table for some of her plants even though i constantly tell her not to and my tortoises have gotten bigger since then so i will be ordering two. but what kind of coating can i use to protect the wood from water damage that's not toxic to the tortoises?
Miyuki Co HI, you can probably just use one of those odourless waterproofing paints. Davies has them. you can wash it with liquid soap and sponge after it dries to make sure to remove some "toxic" stuff if there is. tortoise wont lick the paint anyways. cheers.

Are there such things as counterfeit tortoise houses? My tortoise house has some sloppy drill holes, the wood has a lot of splinters in it, in the zoo med video it doesn't have the same screws and house had the screw holes line up with blank wood so you had to drill it in your self. Either that vid was false advertisement or I got scammed. also the box was in bad condition and wasn't completely together. It was taped up every where. I'm unimpressed and will most likely return it.

Hi. I finished putting the house together. I was wondering should I put a layer of newspaper or something on the bottom before I add the substrate. Because when the tortoise pee or poop will it cause the wood to rot, soften, or cause mildew to grow, etc.
You can but generally people just put the bedding because the newspaper is going to leak through anyway.
