  • An honest review of one of our new pieces of kit, the Thanos Pro II from DigitalFoto. We've been using this piece of kit with the Crane 3s from Zhiyun on a number of commercial shoots and a day of test shooting for an upcoming film we are developing and are blown away by the quality of the kit.

    I really liked your honest review and I am very close to pulling the trigger on a Thanos ii. I especially liked how honest you were about how there is no instant gratification involved and at best there will be somewhat of a learning curve. Should I go forth with the purchase your video will have been a big part of my decision and I will definitely make you you get the appropriate credit.

      Hey Bobby - We've been using the Thanos Pro II for at least 18 months now and it's been a real game changer for our productions. I'd certainly say it's taken quite a while to get used to how it balances - especially with heavier cameras. Thank you for leaving such a positive comment! If you could click the link in the description of the video that will take you straight through to purchasing the Thanos (and as stated, will give us a bit of a kickback). If you've got any questions about the Thanos, just let us know!

    Thanks for the review. I'm impressed with your shots given your experience and can see the potential with some more time at the wheel. Cheers.

    Great review. I'm in exactly the same situation. Heavy load with gimbal, made my arms beg for mercy after 5 minutes. A Tilta brief case attachment made underslung far nicer but ultimately didn't resolve the chest height issue.
    The few days I've spent setting the Thanos Pro ii up I can say the best advice thus far is hips hips hips!
    Getting that waistband super tight so it doesn't slip down, which means the shoulder traps take some of the weight, which you don't really want. I immediately notice when that happens because my back starts complaining but alao the sled is less stable/predictable.

    Just got my TPII. It's not clear whether it needs to be balanced both horizontally and vertically. I can get it perfect horizontally but if the aim is to have the gimbal turn back to the centre horizontally this then puts it out vertically. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    hey thanks for the vid! btw how does the push in push out footage look? I am mainly planning to use it as a crane/dolly replacement (given these 2 are so hard to set up)

    Please tell me, what mode were you using on the crane 3s?

    Your test shots turned out really well! It seems to do a great job of nullifying most of the annoying motion characteristics of regular gimbal handling. It does have its own motion profile, but it's way better than gong handheld.
    There's nothing more annoying than being taken out of a scene because the camera movement is distracting. The test shots were mostly effective in this regard (couple shots, not so much), but overall good job.

      Thank you! Having done more and more with this I'm getting more comfortable with it. It's still a fine art which can always be built upon

    I can definitely balance Thanos ProII horizontally, but only with the djji ronin rs2 batery grip on with a Sony A7III and a Tilta Gage. Which could come to confirm that there should be an extender of about 15cm above the collar to be able to use it with the Tilta base with Lemo 2 pin power input and V lock batteries.

      @fishbulb-films  3 года назад +1

      Hey Roberto, is that because without the battery grip and cage, the rs2 and A7 aren't heavy enough?

    Did you try Tilta float? Sry did not watch all of this yet. Advice on picking one over the other?

    What mode do you feel is best/most useful with the thanos? POV? PF? I’d imagine PF. Whenever I try to get a low shot then lift up for like a medium shot with the shaft of the gimbal vertically upward, it vibrates a lot in PF mode. POV mode doesn’t vibrate but then you have to worry about the roll

    • @fishbulb-films
      @fishbulb-films  3 года назад

      We've found that PF is generally the most useful although it does introduce some vibration if the centre of gravity isn't quite right. If you can hold and guide the trinipod as close to the yoke as possible, it tends to behave more if there's any vibrations, as well as keeping it tight into your body rather than letting the arm pull it away from you. Hope this helps!

    Do you make an horziontal balance, and after a vertical balance?

    • @fishbulb-films
      @fishbulb-films  3 года назад

      Horizontal first, and then vertical yes. Sometimes it's necessary to do a horizontal balance again once the vertical is set

    Do you think this one is better buy then a tilta float? Thnx!

      Hi Oskar, we've not used Tilta's system I'm afraid (but we do like their kit!). At a glance, the Thanos Pro II can take a slightly heavier maximum payload and the yoke on the Tilta system is much smaller (which may suggest less range in movement). If you go for the Tilta, be sure to share your findings!

      Hello - Dan in the video is 5ft6" and it's a little too big for him (although he can still use it comfortably, he'd just prefer it a bit tighter). Jordan at Fishbulb is 6ft5" and it comfortably fits him with room to spare. Hope this helps!

    Do not buy the thanos pro 2, there is no way to balance the arm because there is nothing to adjust in the part where the arm connect to the vest and therefore you will never be able to have the entire system balanced. You are suppose to release the arm and it shouldnt go forwards or backwards, or left or right, but this is only possible with vest and arms that has adjusment knobs in the part the arm connects to the vest, the thanos pro 2 doesnt have it. So you will never be able to balance it. This guy must probably accepted the 20% money return that digital foto offers you if you do a video showing this equipment in a positive way even if it doesnt work. I refused that and asked them for a refund and returned and they didnt want it, I actually beg them and Lydia didnt give a damn. Dont buy this thing from then, all they want and do , is to make a sell, you are warned.
