      There's a lot of nonsense being spouted about bikes being underpowered. It's dick waving and I treat it as such. These bikes are not underpowered. They are just fine for the market at which they are being pitched.

      @@markellott5620 it is fine, but when you are struggling to get up to motorway speeds you suddenly feel very vulnerable on the roads, and if you are screaming the engine just to do 60mph, that's when the riding becomes less enjoyable. Yes this is marketed at the city, but a bike that only works well in one location isn't great

    • @markellott5620
      @markellott5620 2 года назад +34

      @@dannywhite132 plenty of machines are marketed for a specific niche. If you want to tramp up the motorway, this isn't the bike for you.
      To claim that it isn't suitable for UK roads is patently false as evidenced by the amount you see on UK roads.
      As for 'screaming the engine' to get up to sixty... These Enfield singles get up to sixty and will cruise comfortably without screaming. If you want to get up to that speed briskly, you just don't short shift. I use a Scram on dual carriageways on a daily basis for work and have no difficulty moving with the traffic (and keeping up with students on bigger, more powerful machines) and haven't had to 'scream' it yet, nor have I felt remotely vulnerable. Okay, so I have all of another 4 bhp... Maybe that makes a difference.

      I am a new rider. i didnt even try a 350cc engine in my lifetime before. i only tried 150cc and 100cc engines that too for a few days and bought hunter 350 straight away. i was afraid that it will be too heavy because it's 180kg and thought 350cc engine will be too powerful for a beginner. First i thought of classic 350 but it needs experience to control it in traffic conditions and classic 350 needs lot of maintenance. it's not a robust bike. i don't know about scram but it's expensive. so i went for hunter rebel red and been driving it for few days and it feels great. it has the best sound of all royal Enfield bikes bikes running on bs6.. it's easy to control in traffic and feels wonderful. only downside is seat size. Having a pillion is a slight discomfort and also they fall off from the bike if we give quick acceleration and if they don't grab anything for support that's why i put a backrest on

I would reconsider you range as the fuel pump needs to be in 2 litres of fuel to keep working the fuel light on the meteor when you theoretically have another 120 miles of fuel in it. This bike is a good addition to the lineup Royal Enfields have largely shed their build quality issues and the j series engine is though low powered is perfect for this sort of bike .

      Okay, you've answered a question that was puzzling me. The Scram's warning light comes on when I've still got about four litres in the tank. That would explain why.
      Now that it's run in, acceleration is brisk and the brakes, likewise, have bedded in nicely now.
      As a training bike, it is ideal - useful for plodding about on CBT road rides and keeps up with the Z650s and MT07s on DAS courses, while keeping my running costs down.

      @@markellott5620 Yes the tank on the meteor is 15 litres I have never put more than 11 litres in it even after 230 miles with the warning light coming on at 200. I haven’t ridden a scram but it does look pretty perfect for both instructing and commuting. Have you had anything go wrong or had to change the chain or tyres ?

    • @markellott5620
      @markellott5620 2 года назад

      @@johnludmon510 Same size tank as the Scram and same range. The tyres are surprisingly good. Replacing them will be interesting due to the sizes and I want dual purpose tyres as I take this on off road. We will see. I've adjusted the chain, but it's still early days, so not needed to replace it. So far, it has done the job marvellously. Fit and finish is what I would expect from a modern motorcycle.

Growing up we had very few choices other than straight piping it which ultimately isn’t what you want.

    Btw, RE is targeting an user base in India which is very big... The segment which rides 150cc-250cc commuters to go to work in the busy streets of the cities in India.. and with the pricing so low I think they will do a great job in the long run... In India Continental GT or the Intercepter GT can't be a commuter... And Classic 350 is often more expensive than brands like TVS, HERO etc have to offer.

    Thanks for answering my primary question right up front - can this handle the highway? And it's a resound no! I'm a new rider and I have a 250 and it's top speed is just over 60 MPH. The problem is I live in a sprawling city in the U.S. midwest where it's just practically necessary to be able to ride on the highway at 70 MPH with enough power remaining to accelerate 10 MPH - 15 MPH, even if it's just for five to ten miles. I don't need a leader bike or a crotch rocket, but if it can't reach 80 MPH - 85 MPH then it's really restrictive. I have my eye on the Interceptor 650 as it looks like it can do the job.

    not sure why Enfield has limited the power output of the 349cc single and the 411cc single cylinder engine..
    The 411cc has a bore/stroke ratio of 0.91 and a modest 24.3hp output..
    TEC parts in the UK designed and new camshaft for that engine and with a few other mods (less restrictive airflow) the bike gained an extra 20% power and had a power output of 29hp.. .. Which made it better for European highways..
    I see that Hitchcock have a new performance camshaft for the J series engine (349cc) but not in stock before march and there is no mention of what gains to be expected but even a modest 15% should be welcoming giving it 23.2hp instead of 20.2hp.. If torque would be increased by 15% it would be a stronger pulling bike with 31Nm instead of the stock 27Nm,,
    The even longer stroked 348cc Honda air-cooled single makes 30Nm at a low 3000 rpm.. How come the Enfield only make 27Nm at 4000 rpm.. ????

  •  2 года назад +1

    In reality, there are many more competitors to the likes of Brixton or Mash (Chinese small displacement motorcycles)... I think this bring some "familiar brand safety" to that segment...
