    So cool! Just a beginner, recently tried an RS Quest in 15-17 kts of wind (were just wiped out once :-)), all I want now is being able to move her like you did in this video!

    Difficult to tell at that filming distance, but although the boat was a fair bit off from upright and you had too kicker on, I wouldn't have expected that mast to break when it did. It didn't look like you were ht by a squall. Nice sailing (for the most part). Brought back some great memories.

    Great sailing! I’m quite the novice, but from what I understand it can be seen quite clearly here how death rolls happen (at 2:10). The sail is too far out, so the boat wants to bear away, hence the windward heel. Instinctively, the helm wants to correct the bearing so he pushes the tiller away, but this seals the boat’s fate as while she wants to bear away with a windward heel, the tiller is completely to the lee. The boat can’t travel like this and the setup kind of pushes the boat into the water.
    To recover you can give the tiller a quick pump *towards yourself*, put body weight on the lee side, sheet in, but never push the tiller away as this will only make it worse. Typically easier said than done :D

    • @georgeyeoman497
      @georgeyeoman497  2 года назад

      Unfortunately I think on the death roll is was more simple than that....I just dropped the main part way though the gybe so it couldn't catch our body weight! (Sorry for the slow reply)

    • @georgeyeoman497
      @georgeyeoman497  Год назад

      I tie an old tiller extension from the toe strap attachment point, then tie it to the tiller by the pintels using a piece of elastic so it didn't affect the steering. Quite basic but worked well.

  • @simonl7784

    • @georgeyeoman497
      @georgeyeoman497  3 года назад +1

      I think there were a couple of things that went together. Still had a bit of kicker on, went in to the back of a wave and the kite flaps during the hoist probably had the mast bouncing around, but basically it was very windy!

    The roll to windward crash started the mast failure.

    why did that mast break?

    • @georgeyeoman497
      @georgeyeoman497  6 лет назад

      StuffThatBurns - not entirely sure, 200 masts are very bendy and deck stepped so no support from chocks etc. Most likely a weak spot around the spreaders + stopping into the back of a wave = rig loading up and going over the front.
