I’m not gonna cover my progress, but I’m gonna write down the habits I want to work out.
    - reduce screen time on my phone by at least an hour (4 hours at the time of writing)
    - at least 30 minutes to learn something new (long wanted to start editing videos, even bought a course, but more than a year has passed, but I have not learned anything, I think it's a great opportunity )
    - skin care

One interlude. It does not take a consistent 21 days to build a habit. A habit needs as long it might take. Consistency is the key. And abandoning our habit for a day does not destroy the streak, as we commonly assume. We are taking a new path. The more we take it the less overgrowth we will find.
We are all gonna make it.

The things you explained, specifically self image and 21 days to make a habit, are tied to the book "Atomic Habits" I recommend it for anyone who feels quite lost or hopeless about any kind of work.
In the book, just like you said, you shouldn't exactly focus on the immediate result, but rather consistency to yield more self discipline. And indeed it is easier to focus on building/faking a better version of yourself and build up on it: (for example of study) grind on showing up at the desk and opening a book each day, NOT powering through 30 pages in a day just to be burnt out for almost a week.

I dont remember what book I read about this concept in but I actually forgot about it after breaking my arm 3 months ago. I ended up in a rut, got depressed, failed uni, couldnt work out. I am getting into it again: Printing out a habit tracker and following the three main rules of habit forming: Make it easy, make it visible, make it enjoyable. Habit stacking: connect a habit you like to do with a habit you need to do. Make it easy: Read one page. And also: Never skip a day. The reason you want to make the entry point easy is because when you have a chain you wont want to break it. Never break the chain.

For all of those people waiting to know the results by other people, I think i have something for you. Well, I *unknowingly have been doing this thing for 2 years* because of competitive exams and goals. For *1.7 years* everything was *great* because I had *no expectations of good results* after me studying so much. And i didnt really bother to have a self image persona. But dang *having a positive self imagine is so important.* For the *last, i dont know - 5 to 6 months, I have not had as good input and output as I aimed for* because I created **unnecessary self doubt in myself**. Also i used to study kind of like 8 hours day because i really liked it and i still do...but then you *need to have clear goals. Like really clear. Or you can turn lazy for a day, then to a week, then to months.. and you won't even realise.* Literally have the steps clear and *dont be scared if you, i dont know, reach your goal. Love the process. Love yourself. What is your idea of a peaceful life where you can go for your goal simultaneously? Feel that. Live that. Im rooting for you and myself.❤*

Taking on some of the hardest tasks in my life ironically made me realize how easy things can be when you just stay consistent. You can really learn anything if you do it little by little everyday, you just need to be patient and all of a sudden even doing something as hard as learning a language doesn't seem impossible anymore. Just don't start by overworking because you've guilt-tripped yourself to belive you didn't try hard enough because that makes you burn out before you even started. 20 mins 7 days a week is more productive than 3 hours on one day and then doing nothing for the rest of the week if you want to learn something. ...and as soon as you get better at the thing you wanna do you'll automatically invest more time because it'll be more fun.

Now I'm in grade 10, and earlier this year I started to notice signs that I was burning myself out, my effort gradually decreased and I even failed a couple assignments ( thankfully the teacher noticed that that doesnt happen a lot so he talked with me and let me retake the assignment ). I've always just relied on pure effort, not thinking too much about the work, just make that split decision in your mind and just think "GO." Then you work, no questions asked, but it started to take a toll on me wo I'm finding better ways to work

Perhaps I missed that part in this video, but most advice to just put in some "grit" and keep grinding isn't applicable to most humans, especially when intellectual work is involved and, by definition, you can't really shut your mind off and still do it. You can't really keep doing it if you feel it's boring and/or futile and/or thankless. If your parents have been supportive so far, very good for you; if they haven't and they look disappointed because they're too well accustomed, oof, seek psychological counseling immediately, even by a non-professional (like that understanding professor you mentioned) if you can't afford one, lest you become an ineffective self-hating perfectionist for the rest of your life.
But basically, you should find a way to reward yourself or, better yet, have other people reward you, not in the medium-to-long term, but immediately after. This is why I asked about your parents: ideally, they're the easiest ones to coöpt. If your monkey brain doesn't want to press on without results, the easy way to go, as with anything in life, is not to work against it, but with it.
Another thing that can help, since you used to be a proficient student, is to attack the boring part. Challenge yourself. Make it harder. Try to solve the problems before studying the relevant part. Study more advanced subjects. You probably won't understand much, which is exactly the point. If your books aren't all that exciting or advanced, or if reading on paper isn't engrossing enough (backlit screens are a lot "stickier" for many people), use Wikipedia. But you get the idea.

Great advice! I'd like to make an addition, more targeted towards procrastination, since the video assumes we at least start the thing, lol.
TL;DR: to help procrastination, promise to yourself that you'll work for 10 minutes, and do something else if you don't feel like continuing, and really keep that promise! It will help in the long run.
Sometimes the hardest part is starting what you have to do, because you are thinking of all that time it will take. So just make it a point to stay at least 10 minutes at it, because 10 minutes is nothing, right? If after those 10 minutes, you are really not feeling it, do something else. (If it's something urgent, you should do something else, but with a clear end goal, like reading one chapter of a book, or smth similar, then go at it again) But more often than not, once you get into it, especially if it's something that requires effort to get started (like going to the gym for example), you'll think that it'd be a waste to stop, so you keep doing it. At least that's how it works for me. (I still struggle to start sometimes, but this approach still makes me a lot more productive)
This approach works great for something like going at the gym. If after you get there, and spend 10-20 minutes, you still don't feel like doing it, just pack up and go home, cuz that's still better than not going at all.
It's gotta be a promise to yourself tho, because you won't trust in it if you force through even when you don't feel like continuing after the minimum time is up.

This video started with a matchstick burning. Now I do not know if this was intentional or not but motivation is just like a matchstick that is burning. It starts with a burst of flames and slowly and slowly dies, having no flames at all in the end. Motivation, if we talk about also starts like this burning matchstick and slowly dies away and if we hold long to it, we may even burn ourselves. Motivation is a trap.
Discipline and consistency is the key to success, and nothing else is. Take for example you started to run. Day 1 you ran 200m day2 you ran 300m day 3 you ran 400m but then suddenly on day 4 you do not feel like going and will start to create excuses, but only if you would have got out of your home and could have just "walked" (not even ran just walked) 200m then nothing would have stopped you to go out on day 5.
Everything requires discipline and consistency to begin and end with.
Motivation is a drug not a remedy.

For example, I met a person who started playing guitar at the same time as me, in August. It was so hard that I gave up a few weeks later. Then I met this friend again a few days ago, and he is able to play songs that I dream of learning today, he was able to endure in the long term and became everything I wanted to be, only because he trusted the process. If I had discipline, maybe I would have been like this friend ! Work hard pals ! ❤

If you want to do something that's hard to learn watching videos on youtube or distracting yourself on your phone is bad. That's not to say you have to cut these things out but it would benefit your focus if you allow yourself to get bored when you lose motivation. I was trying to learn a coding language a few months ago and when I would lose motivation i'd stare at the wall or meditate for a bit to inflict boredom upon myself. This for me made thinking about coding far less boring because it's the most entertaining thing i'm giving myself. Depending on motivation is a weak mindset it's better to be disciplined or strict with yourself.

This is actually a really good and accurate video. I had struggled for years trying to figure out how I can keep myself productive until just about a month ago I found out why.
I never had a reason to do what I wanted to do. There was no long-term-goal. Though when I had decided that I wanted to become a good fullstack-developer and mathematician (these are THE hobbys of mine) it all changed.
Right now I am working on getting into an exercise-routine of coincidentially also 20 minutes a day and it has been great so far (even though I have had my downs too).
Concluding, I can confirm your points and recommend everyone to try this out as well.

Thank you, and well said. Motivation is not reliable; it comes when it feels like. You are either doing the thing, or not. Just chip away. By the time you are near finished, you will have a new goal that you are tackling, and will forget the original "motivation".

This doesn't teach you anything, this just gives you motivation.
Let me tell you the trick to do something without motivation.
    Follow this 3 simple steps:
    1) First ask yourself if anybody else gonna do it, if yes be lazy, if no, ask yourself do I reaaallly need to? No? Procrastinate. Yes? If I'm not gonna do it nobody will do it, you are standing at your last feet.
*That's how you start your work.
    2) Make it fun to learn something. If you don't enjoy something make it fun. There are many ways to make down horrendous things fun but that needs another explanation.
*This is how you continue to work.
    3) You have lost all motivation to work. Think how much time you have left to do it. Divide the reminder of the time by 5 because after you have done this you are gonna do all the fun things you have planned( you dont have any, just make it up.) and blame every fking thing on earth that is binding you and this work together, grit your teeth, do it.
*This is how you don't stop at doing the work.
    4) Still not working out? Pause for 5 minutes. In that mean time, think of things what can make you do the work you are gonna do in 5 minutes(It will never take 5 minutes). Have you realized that it cannot be done in 5 minutes? No? Zone out and continue to do the work. Yes? Go back to step 3.
*This is how you take a quick rest for the brain and come back to work(In reality you never stopped working)
    In summary:
You don't need motivation if you brainwash yourself into working.

Ironically, before I found this video I came up with kinda the same thing and already tried this approach for myself. But my approach was to try make more new simple habits.
Since I was a child I wanted to learn to play piano, but I couldn’t manage to get enough motivation for that. Even paying for private lessons didn’t help, ‘cause I just didn’t practice on my own.
But recently something changed. This all has started with just simple Duolingo music release and I decided to just try and keep my learning streak as far as I can. That must have been like a prove for myself that I’m eager to study further. After approximately 15 days of my Duolingo streak I bought piano, downloaded habit tracker app and started everyday practicing of just 10-15 minutes per day. Then I decided to try this approach on reading. And now I already have piano streak of 2 months and 20 min reading streak of two weeks.
And that’s not only about the piano or reading, it could be applied for anything…

I'm gonna try that challenge too. Just posting a few smallish goals here and will update when 21 days are up.
    - Practice a language; I've been learning Spanish but have gotten lazy keeping up with it
    - Cut out sugar (as much as possible); I have a bit of a sweet tooth at the moment that I could really do without
    - Do at least 5 (or 10 if I'm feeling good) pushups a day; I have a weak arm/back, and I want to strengthen it by doing *something* for it.
    Be back soon!
UPDATE: It's been more than 21 days (mainly because I forgot), but I have some progress updates.
    - Practicing Spanish has had a lower priority because of time and other life things that came up this month, but I've learned to practice in other ways. My job has some Spanish speaking regulars, so my focus was to try and make small talk with them, and it's been going well!
    - Cutting sugar out has been the toughest on this list, especially at the beginning, both mentally and situationally. Many American foods have added sugars to them, and I didn't realize how much I thought I *needed* them until after I started cutting them out. Thankfully, I found alternatives to sugar (like fruits and simply getting enough sleep) that help with the cravings, but I did end up having "skip" days, but it didn't really impede the progress. Thankfully it's been a lot easier now!
    - The 5-10 pushups I ended up changing about a week in. I work a job that requires a lot of movement, and my back is getting the workout it needs from that. Instead, I've been focusing on aerobic exercises and stretching to balance out the physical exertion I'm doing at work!
Overall, I'm proud of what I've been able to do! I feel as though if I just focused on one goal each month, I would be able to do better since all my eggs would be in one basket, and not several. Still, I'm not going to stop there just because 21 days are up! There's a lot more I want to do, and if these were just smaller goals, imagine what I can do for bigger ones?
I hope that whoever tries this challenge gets the results that they desire from this too! It's a very rewarding experience, and even if you don't achieve your goals right away, keep at it! It does take a bit of time to see results! And besides, you still learn a lot from it! So good luck to everyone who is! May your days go well!

What's with the sugar? I mean, not just you, but in general. Straight up sugared water is what out brain works on and exercising willpower burns sugar (and therefore is not unlimited.) Straight up sugared water also works quite well against ADD precisely for this reason. Why so many people, especially those working intellectual jobs, seem to hold sugar in such contempt is beyond me.

    • @SirMisterMonsieur
      @SirMisterMonsieur 11 месяцев назад

@@fogbankThat's understandable! There is importance in natural sugar! I'd just been having it in excess, and my body couldn't process fast enough, which led to weight gain/belly fat. Though when I started cutting out processed/added sugar and replaced it with natural sugars (like fructose and grain sugars), my weight actually started going down again and I felt a lot more energized to boot!
Though I do understand the importance! Thanks for letting me know about the details!

nice video bro. im depressed and have no motivation and some of your advice is similar to what ive been learning in therapy like thinking about long term goals/results as a series of small steps or small day to day behaviors. lately my therapist and i have also been talking about my self image and recently i learned that i gotta think flexibly and believe that i can become a person that can achieve things even with no motivation. and in wanting to change ive observed that theres many people out there that do just that like people who hate their jobs but they might still be happy because they dont define themselves by their career but perhaps by some other passion. its so painful though to force yourself to work without motivation. so much that it makes me wanna die. but i guess i gotta believe that despite all that i can still get through it.

I just want to add on that this also accurate for any skill you want to learn.
Taking drawing as an example, if you want to get better but think you have no time to do so, just draw for 10 minutes, maybe 5 minutes everyday. Repetition and practice WILL make you better.
Even if you think you don't have that 5 Minutes, draw on the train, while waiting for the water to boil, when you would just doomscroll on instagram.
I'm a stranger on the internet so I'm obviously right.
    You can do it.
