People think they want to be relatable until they realize they need to be humble enough to be truly authentic about it. Kjersti is the real thing and she’s absolutely beautiful for it! The world needs more people like this. She also inspires me to want to strive to be more like that. She’s also the kind of woman I hope my young adult daughter will look up to and want to emulate. What she’s doing takes a lot more strength than most people would realize let alone have within them. She’s earned the respect and recognition she’s gotten! I wish her, and her man (who also seems to be a very inspirational person) very much success and happiness!

I’m 32 & infertile. My heart broke with yours watching _that_ interview. But, it brought me to your channel. Now my heart laughs, cringes, gets passionate, & reflects alongside yours.
There’s such a down to earth, intimate quality to your videos. It’s as though we’re sitting with the sister we never had, applying face-masks & listening as she reads her teenage diaries out aloud.
You’ve made a career & life from interviewing others- that’s your talent. But your interviews with yourself? That’s your gift, and legacy.
I just watched your SATC video, & I can see its influence in your videos & style.
You have allowed us to join you as you go back through your catalogue of ‘columns’ i.e interviews, like an old diary. You take us with you to visit Kjersti at that time in her life…all told from the growth and wisdom of present day Kjersti.
Everyone bangs on about being authentic & transparent…you just _are_ , effortlessly.
At 32 I feel lost, like I have no idea what I’m doing. I feel I’m just bumbling through life, clueless, like an old blind dog bouncing off the walls.
Each video of yours is a reminder to me that _none_ of us know what we’re doing- some of us are just better at hiding it than others.
I’m reminded that we can only do our best, with what we have at the time.
What a beautiful gift you have offered to us.
From the couch, with facemasks & snorting laughter, with love, awkwardness…and gratitude ❤️

Ryan Gosling likes to tell stories. His own humor is unique because it’s Canadian style. Self deprecating. Ironic. Quick witted. They tend to put things back on the other person in a subtle humorous way. You as the receiver end feeling off kilter, unsure if they are serious or not. He was likely giving you a hard time because it’s cultural not personal. I see it in Ryan Reynolds, Will Arnett.

I love your authentic grace and openness! You should give yourself more credit. Regarding the "Awkwardness" of the interview, it reminds me of something I've heard repeatedly because I am a huge SNL fan. So, the SNL to incredible acting pipeline is very real, and I have heard that it's because that if an actor starts out in comedy early or really invests in comedic acting, that they can do ANYTHING. While many either dramatic or action actors don't necessarily translate well to other genres. Ryan Gosling I know has really indulged in comedy and being around other comedic actors (Beavis and Butthead on the red carpet was genius) and I think that really helps fuel him but also adds humility.
The SNL aspect comes in because of the live show, so the actors who have anxiety and that back and forth with the audience seem to really improve after appearances and working within that format. Bill Hader (one of my favorites) and Ryan Reynolds are both outspoken about having severe anxiety, but add that it gives them an edge, and that reminds me of Ryan Gosling's demeanor - he doesn't "feel" like an A list cinema actor, in interviews he comes off like a nervous ex SNL actor who doesn't necessarily know how he got there, but is making the best of it. It's a combination of humility and humanity that's incredibly relatable and that's awesome.
Anyway, just sharing my thoughts about "awkward" but brilliant comedic actors.
PS I would LOVE to see you interview Fred Armison and Natasha Lyonne. I think y'all would have a blast! Thanks for sharing your interviews, they are delightful in a tumultuous world.

It's been so interesting watching your interviews because it shows how difficult it is for an interviewer, such as yourself, to ask an interesting question that hasn't been asked over and over again. I have seen a lot of your interviews before your Blake lively moment , the problem I see, is you get personal with them, like you want them to open up and talk about personal matters, some have responded well , I saw Ben Barnes give you back a great attitude, but is cringe and awkward watching a stranger to ask those type of things to actors who sit to talk about their project, is like :.. "so this movie is romantic , are you a romantic in real life. ? Tell me all about you " they don't know you and they might not want to discuss personal stuff.

Actors understand that working in big Hollywood films means giving up some of their personal life for the fame and money. Fame isn’t for everyone, but actors can choose if they want that life. They’re paid well because they’re famous and have to handle the attention. My job is to deliver what the audience wants, and it’s the actors’ job to help sell the movie. It’s a trade-off: they promote the film, and we get interesting stories. Most actors like talking about various topics, and I try to get them to share what they’re comfortable with. If they don’t want to answer, that’s okay.

You can also chose to be respectful of the actors as an interviewer. Yes, mostly, when someone becomes famous, unfortunately a lot of their personal life is broadcasted. But that doesn't make it ok and you shouldn't advocate it either.
It's the difference between having a "it is what it is" mentality versus a "everyone else is intrusive of your personal life, but we can be better" mentality.
It doesn't matter how famous someone is. They still deserve a certain level of privacy and respect.

I remember a cringe moment with a guy that was a big lead singer of a band that was popular in Seattle in the early 2000s and I had given him vocal and performance training. He was only a couple years older than me, and it was hard not to crush on him, but I tried to remain professional then he invited me out to see the band play and I showed up, and thought he was singing a song straight to me and the lyrics sounded like they were about me (in my head apparently) and when he got off stage to sit down, he didn’t even acknowledge or recognize me. the next time I saw him in a professional setting he didn’t realize I had even come out to see them play and told me about a girl who thought his songs were about her 😂 I was so embarrassed and it helped me to realize that sometimes our romantic fantasies are simply in our head and it helped bring me back down to earth lol that his job was to make the ladies want him and think he wanted us back 😅

I didn't think the interview with Gosling was awkward, but more that the questions you asked him were not questions he was used to getting. i'm interested, for some reason, in just natural dialogue. I love the candid moments where they don't have lines, i LOVE the interactions between two people- ESPEcially awkward/obscure ones. Like the parts you cut/people generally cut.
I get so bored with most questions about their movie- I think MOST times the art can speak for itself.
and so on and so on

Junket interviews used to be more flirtatious. I remember Ben Affleck used to have a recurring gag with this one French-Canadian interviewer that is a bit uncomfortable to watch in retrospect. Anne Hathaway had one involving a proposal from an interviewer as well.

I think Kjersti kept trying to keep romance as the focus of the conversation. Her first question made an assumption about how his career was going. Which he completely disagreed with, and tried to go in a different direction with his answer. With each answer, he kept trying to steer the conversation away from romance because he didn't want to be type cast. But Kjersti wasnt prepared to follow the flow of conversation. She kept trying to keep it going the way she wanted, and he wasnt playing along. He didn't want the "my career has been mostly romantic leads" image. She didnt catch onto that. She was focused on sticking to her original plan. Which is why the interview "cringed". These types of conversations happen to everyone. Love that she didnt let it stop or change her career.❤

Your comments at the end of this video are so so insightful. Believe it or not, but this is helpful for reserachers doing qualitative work. I myself took a similar, more conversational approach with my research participants, in my PhD, and this really changed the dynamic of our interaction. As you said, it really is about the interaction, not necessarily the individuals. I also love your reflective approach, showing the good and the bad... I think this is the best side of social media and the internet in general, when we get to be a healing/learning community. All the best from Brazil! 🥰

"Let them talk" is a great pro tip for any interview. You also need to learn when to stick to your plan (next question) and when to skip some prepared questions, let the people speak their minds, adapt, and follow them with ad hoc questions. Here you actually did that, but it backfired because it was a bit awkward from the start.
It's not easy to ask a personal question (even if it relates to the movie or their character) in a way to not make them feel bad if they don't want to answer or don't know how... It's like a dance, a bit of push and pull, sensing each other. Some are more rigid, others are more playful by nature, so it's good to study each person beforehand (not just their background and interesting stuff, but also how they behave in the interviews). For example, I've heard from one radio journalist who did many interviews about one particular actor who is known to be very grumpy until he had his coffee. This guy learned the hard way because his first interview went horribly wrong, but the next time he met this actor it went great. So it's not just about feeling simpatico or not, there's a lot of things going on behind the scenes you can't know about and some people can keep them apart and others bring that to the interview (workplace). That shows the level of experience and professionalism on their part.
As a side note, I've been publishing my articles from 15 years of freelancing in a blog, so I can relate. It's interesting to relive some moments and see how you have grown and on the other side share your past with the audience who (in your case) is interested in archive footage of certain celebrities and see how they have changed. Ryan in particular was typecast at the start of his career and now we can see how incredibly versatile he is. Also in the interviews, he's usually playful and charming, but also quite sarcastic (soulmates comment is a good example), which can get confusing if you are not aware or paying close attention. He seems like a great guy who is not afraid to laugh at himself.
I personally don't think this was a bad interview. It's a gem because we got to know his style better after that and we can see he was always thoughtful, no matter the questions he got. But I do agree it's not usable for mainstream media because it does not have good highlights and it's not shallow enough for quick bites they are looking for from the entertainment reporters.

  • @mel-kaom4637

I don’t think the interview was a failure. You looked very young, beautiful, and confident when you interviewed him. He almost seemed a little shy to be answering these personal questions about how romantic he is or could be (because you hit the nail on the head). He did not want to be pigeon holed as a romantic movie leading man. Looking back now we can see him in Barbie, La la Land, The Fall Guy , The Notebook as the Romantic movie Leading man. So your instincts to ask the question was right but for him to answer that question could have hurt his chances of doing other projects that weren’t romantic movies.
