The real Henry Ashworth (Anthony Way) got a lot of publicity out of this and he did appear on many TV shows unlike what is depicted in the movie. Like all Boy Sopranos, he lost his treble voice around 1997-8. I saw him on some TV show. He mentioned that the casting team did not want him... they were looking for an actor who could sing. But could not find one. He said that they finally settled for a singer who could do a bit of acting. I would say his acting was excellent.
I've really enjoyed watching this series again. Although Ashworth's mother dumping her son on Grandpa and going off to a hot love nest on the other side of the country with the organist seemed a bit unfair on the boy.
Real drama. A story that grabs one's interest from the start and is "good to the last drop".

Read the novel. Joanna Trollope is a fine writer.
