Having sold my Lightwave S10 due to condensation issues on the TMB I thought I'd replace it with a lightweight double skin solo tent. I went for the Wechsel Exogen 1 ( on sale at Ultralight Outdoor Gear ) but first impressions are that it feels a bit flimsy. I'm not convinced yet it's up to 3+ season mountain backpacking use? Do you have one? How have you found it's performance in wind ? I'd love to know before I decide whether to keep or return it .

I bought the Exogen 2 - 2 man version of this this summer under 2kg. Great quality, love it. On the Exogen 2 the pole diameter is 9.3mm. With the footprint, it's easy to set up outer first. Keeps me dry and really well ventilated. Its a great amount space for one person and 2 porches. One for my panniers/rucksack and one for cooking etc. £380 for tent and Footprint for this quality seems like a good buy.

You don't sound particularly thrilled with this tent. The fact you are asking at the end "should I try it out or send it back" should tell you all you need to know.
Tent doesn't look fragile, it's going to flex in the very high wind, but it looks sturdy enough to me. But I'm guessing it also needs seam sealing as they provided it in the pack.
Tent looks decent enough to me, as much as I love in tents that's pitch inner first feel more spacious inside, the whole inner pitch first in the driving rain never really appeals - and those tie out point on the outer just seem a bit old fashion.
Have you still got your X-mid? Can't you just use that in the Autumn?

On first look, a lightweight and fairly roomy tent, and I appreciate why you decided to replace the Lightwave S10 after your rather wet TDMB trip, but inner pitch first - in the weather we've had this summer all over Europe? Not sure that's a good call. Although you can throw the fly over quickly, by the time you fiddle with all those ties and get it pegged down the inner will be soaked. And if you don't do up the ties that will surely adversely affect stability. Also, if you face the (narrower) foot end into wind (as you suggested in the vid), that would leave the wind (and rain) blowing straight into the vestibule. Sorry, this one's definitely not for me 😟 but I will await your decision (or field test) with interest.

Sometimes I think to myself "Del, with all the tents you have and ££ you've spent, just buy the AKTO with second pole, then it's a one and done for 4 seasons......end of". You ever thought that A? You don't sound convinced with that Weschel.

@@mountain_del1863 My two Aktos both succumbed to UV, obviously after plenty of use but I’ve been left with the feeling that Hilleberg tents are less durable than folks think. Maybe the brown or red would last longer. Both my Aktos were green.

@@thedaftestnameicouldthinko8233 interesting, I had one decades ago that was wrecked by my own youthful neglect and rough housing I have heard a few folks on forums lately saying there has been a dip in quality in the last few years but I can't vouch for that. I'm a light wave addict (have 6 now) however I'm not sure that Carol McDermott/light wave/crux are even still in business. Website looks very neglected and can't seem to source new ones any more. IMHO they are the best tents ever made.

I suspect this tent would be pushing it to stand up to being a true three season tent, let alone three/four season. In my opinion, hub pole systems are not reliable under stress. This tent has too much unsupported fabric that will catch winds. Inner pitch first is not popular in the UK due to our very changeable weather but at the end of the day, inner pitch tents are a personal preference rather than a design flaw tbh. I have to say, this tent wouldn't be on my shortlist for a lightweight robust three season tent for UK use (something I am now in the market for). A tents that has caught my eye the latest trekkertent "soar" DCF, especially now it has an updated pole attachment system that is the same as hilleberg soulo and stikia (pole sleeve & clips). It is also available in a more affordable silnylon although I'm not sure if that one is polesleeves only. Pretents lightrock 1 also looks a contender for my shortlist.

Personally, i wouldn't give this Exogen a second thought simply because its an inner pitch 1st, At that price point, If i had to go inner 1st it would be the MSR Hubba NX having seen how flimsy it looks when pitched. In defence of the Lightwave Sigma, i have never tried the S10 but used the S15 plenty of times now and more recently, the S20 has become my favourite tent, period. Both these two tents have much more internal space , especially head room over the S10 as you will know. I have only ever experienced condensation build up on the inside of the pole sleeves and literally a few runs that have been easily dealt with by wiping over with an absorbent cloth and i have never had any issues with sleeping bag getting wet etc.The Extex material has always performed very well for me , even when its been constant rain. Having owned dozens of top branded tents and decades of experience in many different countries i fully understand that its a case of horses for courses but for UK Autumn and Winter the Lightwave Sigmas are by far the best choice of tents for me personally. If i had to be picky i would say the Sigmas would benefit by having a double ziip but thats it .Space wise, weight, packed volume and price there is nothing else that slightly appeals to me. I still own the Hillyberg Unna but i prefer the S20 although the 10mm poles on the Unna will give it the edge in stronger winds. This might sound a bit personal but did you drink alcohol the nights you experienced the condensation build up ??? The reason i ask is that it has been 7 years since i last drank any alcohol and i used to notice that when i did drink alcohol i used to sweat a lot during the night which no longer happens and i am quite certain that this makes a significant difference when sleeping inside a tent . Have you ever noticed the difference if you dont drink alcohol in the condensation levels to when you do ???

Still far too expensive for me, and looks a little on the flimsy side, but worst of all it only has 1 zip of the outer fly! That’s my biggest bugbear with tents…worse even than it being an inner pitch first shelter for me that is!
Wouldn’t even consider this one personally.

Don't know if you've considered this one, but if I was looking for a versatile, 1 person/3 season with the ability to handle some weather, I'd probably go Nemo Dragonfly. Roomy with good feature's, larger vestibule. It's 985 grams, but still a bit lighter than the Hilleberg Enan and F10 Helium.

My Wechsel Exogen 2 is one of the most disappointing tents I’ve ever bought. It thrashes in the wind and, when I open the fly, condensation falls on to the floor of the inner. The fly fabric is very slippery and does nothing to stabilise the pole. The stupid ribbons for fastening the pole to the fly are also slippery. This makes them difficult to tie and they loosen off in a wind, giving the pole more room to move. The tent thrashed so much in a wind which the neighbouring Duomid failed to notice that I went to sleep in the car. The tent was undamaged next morning but there is no way I would have got any sleep in it. However, first time out, I found myself camping on a deer-cropped lawn which turned out to be growing on top of a huge rock slab. The pegs only went in a couple of inches but that did not matter because the tent is fully free-standing. It’s definitely a fair weather tent with this one and only advantage.
All of the most disappointing tents I’ve owned had longitudinal poles - a Golite, a Sierra Designs Mach 1, which had 3 poles and still couldn’t handle wind, and the Exogen. I’ll be sticking to pyramids and tents with transverse poles, such as the Enan, in future.
Anybody want to buy a cheap Exogen 2?

I looked on Wechsel's website to see what season they rate the Exogen 1 to be. They don't list their tents by season. The Exogen 1 is in the 'Zero-G Line' series. Which seems to be light weight and gram counting. It's not in their series 'Unlimited Line' their version of 4 season or expedition. I guess that means 3 season or perhaps even 3 minus given it's syl-nylon and inner pitch first. Doesn't inner pitch pretty much mean a trade off of wind stability for weight? Come to think of it, is there any inner pitch first tent that's "3+ season"? It's interesting to see the Exogen so thanks for that and as ever, speculative comments on RUclips multiply exponentially in inverse proportion to their relevance 😀but don't buy the next tent! All the best from NZ branch!
