    There is a "bubble wrap insulation" here in the UK it's called Alreflex 2L2, it's a housing insulation but it is very light so I have a piece of it just over 6 foot long and 30 inches wide, it rolls up extremely small (much smaller than my Thermarest foam mat) and weighs practically nothing but it is incredibly well insulating and is great for underneath my air mattress, one added bonus is that surprisingly (to look at it) it is incredibly fire resistant as well.

    You can even go into winter with 3 season gear by layering sleeping bags as well. As long as you're not constricted and not compressing the insulation, you can stay nice and toasty 😊 and if you bring the dog and can fit the dog in the sleeping bag with you, even better! 👍 😁

    I use my Zenbivy systems for all year round.The way I do this is I have a 10 degree extra large ultralight quilt for the shoulder months. I have a synthetic light bed 40 degree quilt. I have the quilt liner that they sell. I also have a fleece liner that I got from Amazon for 20 bucks. In the summer months, I use the synthetic quilt convertible with the rest of the Zen bivy sheet system. In the shoulder months, I use my ultra lite 10° down quilt. In the winter months, I use the sleep system with the ultra lite 10° down on the sheet system and on the inside I have my synthetic convertible quilt set up like a blanket under my down quilt. With the quilt liner between the down and the synthetic. That allows for me to have a comfort value of -5 Fahrenheit and the limit value of -25. If I choose to have the fleece for a potential of anything below -5. Or on the very hot summers the fleece works well as a blanket. I live in the Rocky mountains of Wyoming.

    On the liner added to sleep system note I found similar warmth increase but swapping for my bivvy bag I use in summer when sans tent. In shoulder season and winter it adds extra redundancy for if tent fails and helps keep wind off that gets through my tent when conditions are moderate wind (usually durston xmid 2 solid). Especially handy in UK hills I spend most time as conditions usually very wet but warmer than alpine at close to but not quite freezing which I find sucks more than dry much colder alpine which I enjoy. Saved me in 7 hour storm was caught in earlier this week and I use it as a sleep system and secondary items dry bag inside my packs with smaller one for emergency dry clothes.

    The closed cell foam pad makes a decent seat if you sit cross legged on it with it still bundled up. If you keep your knees at about the same height as your hips, it won't make your back sore, assuming your posture is good. I sit on an office chair a lot which does the same thing. I prefer it at the bottom of my pack. It's out of the way the way you do it, though. I take foam with a cheap r2 air mattress to go on top.

    I'm curious about your experience with cold conditions and that Zenbivy pad. Ive used the Therarest Xtherm for cold season use in the past. I bought the Zenbivy UL pad this year, but haven't used it in temps below ~35F yet, so I'm not sure how it will perform in fall-winter. It is, however, much more comfortable than the Xtherm, so I'm hoping I can use it in the cold.
    I live in Washington State, and would be using it at mid-high elevation in the Cascades, expecting temps around High teens to twenties, but possibly as low as single digits, and sleeping on deep snow. Our snowpack tends to be dense and wet, which makes it pull heat more than a dryer snowpack. I doubt the pad is warm enough for deep winter use, but I wonder how late in the year I can get away with it.

      @eric_hanson  2 месяца назад +1

      I have used the Zenbivy UL mattress down to 19F paired with the 10F UL quilt. That was about as cold as I'd take the combo. But I think if you had a sleeping bag the mattress could go down a little colder. You do need to inflate it AAAALLLL the way to get it to it's full R value I think. For really cold trips I'm definitely taking the Nemo Tensor Extreme.

      depends on the location. It's still a good idea to keep food away from your tent but if bears are hibernating you're mostly concerned with rodents.

    Super interesting to see your gear. I just returned from the same type of 4-5 day trip into the Wind River Range. I also took my Shadowlight 60L, generally reserved for my bigger load outs. I did add my black diamond micro spikes just in case the trail got icy or slick. I tried a Tarptent Rainbow Li 1P and an extra DCF 8X10 tarp for extra cover during thunderstorms. I stuck with the Zen Bivy 10F UL quilt and Nemo Tensor XC pad. My clothing system and layers were similar to yours and I stayed really warm. I feel as though I may have outgrown the OV Shadowlight and would really love to get something a bit more water proof or resistant. My 40 and 55 L packs just don't hold the bulkier winter sleep system and clothing, so I'm on the hunt for a lightweight winter pack.....HMG 70L? or ?? Anyway, great video. I look forward to seeing the actual trip vid.

      hmmm. It's probable you need to give a wash. Old gear does require some maintenance to keep them performing like new! If you do wash it make sure you use specific soap for sleeping bags, use a washing machine without the center post, and dry it on LOW heat with a couple tennis balls to bounce around and break up the down clumps.

    A 15 degree bag, a liner, and two pads? How cold do you expect it to get in the fall? I use only my 35 deg. bag and my Nemo insulated tensor (or just one foam pad if in the hammock) in the fall, and am worried I'll be too warm. I switch to my 20 deg bag and a SOL bivy sack in the winter (2 foam pads in the hammock). And 3 layers for legs? Just thin cargo pants for me, with a rain pants if it gets really cold/windy. Long johns (well. polyester pajama pants) just for sleeping. And yeah, I'm in Washington. Are you a cold sleeper? Do you have circulation problems? Edit: Oh. 14K foot in Co. Never mind. lol

I'm working on a product that will assure things like your water filter, phone, charge brick, etc. do not freeze should temps in the tent fall below freezing w/out having to jam them into your mummy sleeping bag (hate that). Would love the opportunity to chat with you on whether you think this is a viable product that folks would find valuable during the winter months. Not sure the best way to contact you... Am building the prototype right now and expect to have a functional product by the end of the year.

    Can somebody please explain to me why they are buying Nemo tents? They are more expensive than their DCF counterparts from other brands and they are even more heavy. What is the deal? Wire people into these products

    • @boredandagitated
      @boredandagitated 2 месяца назад +1

      They make some of the lightest traditional tents, freestanding and semi-freestanding. DCF trekking pole tents will be lighter, but a freestanding tent has some perks when you anticipate a location that’ll be hard to stake or very small tent sites.
      Some folks like that Nemo uses a fly fabric that doesn’t stretch compared to the sil nylon of big Agnes and other big name traditional brands.

    • @Andy-x3i8y
      @Andy-x3i8y 2 месяца назад

      @@boredandagitated but there are a number of freestanding DCF tents that are lighter than anything. Nemo has to offer.

    • @kaimflyn
      @kaimflyn 2 месяца назад

      Seconding the freestanding tent comment. There are some people who just simply don't want or don't like non-freestanding tents or DCF material. And most non-freestanding tents I see don't allow for stargazing without the fly on the same way a freestanding tent will. There is also the aspect that Nemo makes double wall tents, which is a priority for some backpackers. Not to mention Nemo has a pretty great warranty and strong claims for their commitment to lowering their environmental impact as a company. I also feel like Nemo tents have the edge with the amount of internal storage pockets you get for the weight.
      All in all, it comes down to preference. Personally I wouldn't consider a DCF tent unless I committed to something like a thru hike or moved to an area with very wet conditions. And I own a gently used Nemo Dagger tent and love it to pieces.

    17:05 - regarding the 1000 fill power hoodie. I'm disappointed that the industry doesn't have a consistent way or rating down jackets and hoodies. You can have 1000 fill power but if there isn't enough down, then it might just be a 40F jacket instead of the 0F jacket you're looking for. And you really don't know until you acquire it and even test it out.

    • @eric_hanson
      @eric_hanson  2 месяца назад

      This is very true. It's really hard to tell how warm a jacket is and fill power doesn't tell you all that much. This jacket for example was not as warm as I expected it to be!
