I'm going on a three day backpacking trip in the mountains of Colorado. This will be my first cold weather / fall backpacking trip of the year. I'm using only 3 season backpacking gear and using creative methods to extend the viability of my normal summer gear into cold weather situations.

The edit during the Buff neck gaiter talk made me chuckle. I'm so excited is finally fall! I'm not a heat person, so hiking/backpacking in the fall is ideal for me
ha! Thank you. You're season is here!
You can even go into winter with 3 season gear by layering sleeping bags as well. As long as you're not constricted and not compressing the insulation, you can stay nice and toasty 😊 and if you bring the dog and can fit the dog in the sleeping bag with you, even better! 👍 😁
I have definitely done the sleeping bag + quilt combo and have gotten much more comfortable sleep on really cold trips that way. Definitely helpful to have a cuddle buddy too!
Miranda’s shot resting reminded me of y’all’s trip and how much LMNT helps her as well with hiking. ❤❤ great video 👍🏽
Can’t wait to see your video about this hike. To me, 3-10 day hiking trips are actual backpacking. You literally have to bring everything you need. Being in New England, the Whites in the fall are amazing, but weather is always a concern. Great video and good luck on your hike.
Thanks! Fall backpacking is pretty glorious but it can turn on you!
“How did Eric Hanson got so cool” Well done Eric, smooth 😂
haha good eye!
I’m with you on this, definately prefer cold over hot humid hiking.
Each season has it's perks!
I love Justin's dark chocolate peanut butter cups. They put all the regular ones to shame.
Indeed. I mean, are the other guys even trying?!
Blackout coffee has a new instant that is the best I have ever tried.
OOOH nice! I will check that out.
-Coffee fiend
The reactor liner is great. I also combine a big agnes farrington with my 10 degree zenbivvy to increase the comfort rating when it gets colder. The farrington is also a great summer bag when you only want a light cover.
Nice! Adding quilts and bags together is a great way to avoid buying a true winter sleeping bag.
It's getting close to hot tent season out here in Ontario. woo hoo!
I was waiting for Miranda's double thumbs up at 9:17!
Take care on your trip, there's a cold front going thru. Colorado Rockies are getting their first snow of the season.
ha! you know your stuff! I should've gone double thumbs!
Hot water bottles wrapped into aluminium foil. Great way to add warmth as long as you're near a water source.
I haven't tried aluminum foil. That's cool.
The closed cell foam pad makes a decent seat if you sit cross legged on it with it still bundled up. If you keep your knees at about the same height as your hips, it won't make your back sore, assuming your posture is good. I sit on an office chair a lot which does the same thing. I prefer it at the bottom of my pack. It's out of the way the way you do it, though. I take foam with a cheap r2 air mattress to go on top.
I'd much rather have packed the pad on the bottom but the OV Shadowlight doesn't have straps on the bottom. But yeah, it's a good seat too!
Chef's kiss for the search suggestions in the sponsorin part of the video. I have been wondering how you got so cool.
apparently it's a very popular search prompt.
Looking forward to watching your upcoming Colorado trip. Perhaps you will get to build a snowman...lol
Want to say thank you for your gear video. It really helped me make the decision to buy the sea to summit thermolite Extreme fleece sleeping bag liner. I believe it will work nicely with my 15 degree down sleeping bag.
Have fun and stay safe.
Thank you! I'm not sure if there's snowman level snow yet! Good call on the liner, enjoy!
Your Epic Trails shows on PBS are pretty good.👍
I’ve been using a quilt 0° with a synthetic quilt over the top and a bivy bag. Has served me VERY well but now I might buy the polar ranger or a western mountaineering bag
I'm not familiar with the Polar Ranger but Western Mountaineering are very well respected bags.
Wanna come up to Alberta this year and really test some winter gear with me 😌
There is a chance I'll be up that way!
I’m very interested to see how the pack works out for you. That said, I’m waiting for the day when SOMEONE comes up with a pack that has a designated compartment for a bear canister! I think I could design one!!! Just about everyone carries one these days, and a lot of places require them, so what’s wrong with this picture? A designated compartment just above the hip belt?
almost nobody outside of the USA uses bear canisters
I took some 3/4" d rings and some gorilla tape and attached them to my bear canister. I have a tie off point now
Already done. Nunatak makes the Bear Ears.
The Shadowlight 60 and 45 have been solid packs for me, although I don't have tons of experience with them. And you might have to make a pack that scratches that itch!
Only used in the WESTERN Unites States. No one on the east coast uses them. @toon6476
Oh dang! I had no idea Appalachian Gear Company went out of business. I was going to get a gaiter and another hat this fall.
I'm definitely sad about it! I liked them.
@@eric_hansonI never got to buy one of their ponchos! I was gonna be Clint Eastwood on the trail
you should check if the patch of your water bag has harmful chemicals. i think it's for tent or jacket only
Super interesting to see your gear. I just returned from the same type of 4-5 day trip into the Wind River Range. I also took my Shadowlight 60L, generally reserved for my bigger load outs. I did add my black diamond micro spikes just in case the trail got icy or slick. I tried a Tarptent Rainbow Li 1P and an extra DCF 8X10 tarp for extra cover during thunderstorms. I stuck with the Zen Bivy 10F UL quilt and Nemo Tensor XC pad. My clothing system and layers were similar to yours and I stayed really warm. I feel as though I may have outgrown the OV Shadowlight and would really love to get something a bit more water proof or resistant. My 40 and 55 L packs just don't hold the bulkier winter sleep system and clothing, so I'm on the hunt for a lightweight winter pack.....HMG 70L? or ?? Anyway, great video. I look forward to seeing the actual trip vid.
Expensive gear trip but that’s what you have to have to be comfortable.
Appalachian gear company gone? NOOOOO. Man their Alpaca hoodie was my favorite piece of gear hands down!
I love those hoodies. I'm gonna pour one out for them.
I've watched you carry an assortment of ultralight backbacks of different brands. Which ones would you say were actually comfortable to carry?
You should make a top 5 camp chair video, btw o was VERY upset when i went to order another appalachian gear hoodie i have a hoodie, a summer ss shirt, bed liner and a hat all favorite wish the company would have reached out for help dont know where to look for alpaca pieces now
NU 25 never fails
This is awesome! Thank you for the vid. Not gonna lie I’m a little scared of cold temp camping since I’m so new. This is helpful. May still give it some seasons before I give it a shot tho
Have you tested the REI Flash 55 pack?
Glad to hear this is helpful! If you're thinking about doing some cold camping, start with something mild and manageable and just keep practicing. It's amazing how just a few experiences can get you feeling quite competent. And nope, I haven't used the REI Flash. Seems like a solid option though.
I can’t find my ursack man😫I looked everywhere
Try swift instant coffee. Best in the biz in my opinion, actual single origins available and made in PA.
Will do! Always on the lookout for good coffee!
👍🐿👍 awesome insight brother.
Bring oil for energy. I have a small bottle and squirt a few spoons of oil with hot water inside my meals.
Oil is energy dense!
There is another company that does make an alpaca hoodie
Great video on cold weather camping. I'm working on a product that will assure things like your water filter, phone, charge brick, etc. do not freeze should temps in the tent fall below freezing w/out having to jam them into your mummy sleeping bag (hate that). Would love the opportunity to chat with you on whether you think this is a viable product that folks would find valuable during the winter months. Not sure the best way to contact you... Am building the prototype right now and expect to have a functional product by the end of the year.
Wait did you just go to Sprouts in Denver today?
Do you keep your food near your tent in winter or do you still hand food away from camp? Thanks
What temperature range are you expecting?
Not bringing any gaiters?
I definitely do for winter camping. And yes, they make a huge difference. But I wasn't anticipating snow on the ground quite yet. But even with no snow they'll make you warmer!
@@eric_hanson 14000 ft up and no snow? Awesome! Have fun on your trip, hope you’ll share some views 😁
What scale do you have?
What happens when I fall in a river? That's what I pack for.
Can somebody please explain to me why they are buying Nemo tents? They are more expensive than their DCF counterparts from other brands and they are even more heavy. What is the deal? Wire people into these products
They make some of the lightest traditional tents, freestanding and semi-freestanding. DCF trekking pole tents will be lighter, but a freestanding tent has some perks when you anticipate a location that’ll be hard to stake or very small tent sites.
Some folks like that Nemo uses a fly fabric that doesn’t stretch compared to the sil nylon of big Agnes and other big name traditional brands.
@@boredandagitated but there are a number of freestanding DCF tents that are lighter than anything. Nemo has to offer.
17:05 - regarding the 1000 fill power hoodie. I'm disappointed that the industry doesn't have a consistent way or rating down jackets and hoodies. You can have 1000 fill power but if there isn't enough down, then it might just be a 40F jacket instead of the 0F jacket you're looking for. And you really don't know until you acquire it and even test it out.
