I think this movie would've done a lot better if they gave Astro Boy the same conviction as Aang from Avatar. Astro is suppose to be made of pure positive energy, imagine him begging not to fight but having to anyway. Imagine him taking a few punches cause he's trying to reason with the other robots, slowing breaking down. He not only gets arena and his friends on his side, but us as the audience too. Then when we finally get to Zog, you can buy that he didn't want to fight him and accept his own fate. A little dark I know, but that's what some kid's shows and movies need to stand out from the crowd.

It would be more interesting if Astro could unleash his incredible potential and literally force everyone in the arena to stop the slaughter, awakening their hidden minds with his own suffering from their weapons. This would make him truly chosen for them, because he managed to abandon the evil will of evil masters, stop obeying the program and choose a different path, defeat the invincible - the program itself and the directive. After all, robots have no will to resist, they were created with tools with intelligence. He had no choice but to destroy them and they had no choice but to attack until a miracle happened.

It could just be a very dense robot, where the two secondary robots become mostly hollow. Realistically if the extra legs and weapons are taking up most of the inside, and the rest of the robots parts are just sliding apart to expand, it could work. Its just not really a practical design, and is more showy than it is capable of fighting. It would also explain why the small gunner robot got completely destroyed in a single hit, the metal is probably quite thin, and there is no internal structure inside to resist it.

I wasn't introduced to Astro Boy from this movie, but god damn if it didn't intensify my love for this series ten fold. The movie has its issues, sure. But just because something isn't perfect, doesn't mean it's bad.
Astro Boy is one of those Great Animated Films. It has Great Characters and a New Origin Story for Astro Boy. It is based on the Japanese Franchise with the same name. It's ashamed that the 2009 Animated Film didn't do well at the box office.
The forcefield isn't always active, it turns on when someone crosses the threshold. So before fights start they tune the forcefield to the fighters in the arena. Or at least that's the most reasonable theory I can think of.
Astro is war machine. He can just easily threaten him or gave him lesson with his power. He can stealthily shot him in the leg or all limbs and that's it. Astro followed his will to fight is just as same as him
