  • Some of the worst inner-city industrial neighborhoods can produce the best black and white images whether you're using film, like I am in this video, or a Ricoh GR III, or any other digital camera. Regardless the camera, the subjects are all the same. The results depend on the gear you're using, and more importantly, your own eye!
Framing the shot is the key to quality photographs. Everyone will frame slightly different, and there is no correct way, only better angles, based on personal opinion.
In this video, I drive through some industrial areas on the near southside of Indianapolis and came across some excellent photo opportunities, some I expected, but like the car on the cover, some were certainly unexpected.
I use AristaEDU 400 black and white 35mm film in my Minolta SRT101 with a Minolta MD 28-85mm f/3.5 lens. I really enjoy this lens as it gives me a lot of reach when needed, but I can pull back for tight spaces and still get fairly sharp images.
The Minolta SRT101 is also a favorite of mine. It fits in with my Four Horsemen - The SRT101, along with my Pentax K1000, Canon AE-1 and Nikon FM10. All four are my go-to in-rotation cameras that keep manual photography fun for me. No autofocus here! Just manual settings, a basic light meter in each camera (because I'm too lazy to carry around a light meter or read one when I can look through the camera and get a fairly good reading), and manual film advance. That's true photography for me, and harkens back to my old career as a sports and news photographer/editor in the daily newspaper industry.

Thanks Adrian! I probably would have shot a lot digital also but thats what i like about film, the challenge of nailing it with just a shot or two. Its honestly such a rush and feel of accomplishment to limit yourself yet get the result you were after. Nothing against digital of course, I own and use several!

    Canon AE-1

    Olympus OM-1n
    Olympus OM-2SP
    Love shooting in b/w also!
    Enjoy!

Nothing like shooting film! Digital is fine but film is art!

You still have your Ricoh GR or did you sell?? Love your videos man! Great tag along vibe. Great job subscribed.

Yes, I still have it, but it's been on the backburner for a while. After 60+ videos, not much more I can say about it, and unlike most photographers, most of my motivation is making videos, so I feel like I've worked it about as much as I can lol but I can't bring myself to sell it because I'm sure after a break for a while I'll get back to it eventually.

Autofocus is certainly the best way to go. I'm going through a more analog phase, but finding autofocus is more of my friend than I thought! lol

How is that srt101 build quality ? Been shooting pentax mx and might give Minolta a shot

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Год назад

The SRT101 is built like a tank. If you don't like bulky, heavy film cameras it wouldn't be the best choice, but I kind of like the dinosaurs like that lol

"Rough"? What do you mean by "rough"?

lol meaning people get mugged, robbed, shot in these areas quite frequently now that there is a lax in bail laws. I typically go to these areas on sunday mornings/afternoons when it's at it's most calm. You don't want to be caught out of your car in most of these areas late afternoon/evening.
