Carnival’s original mardi gras ship was a little ship built in 1960 and was originally named RMS Empress of Canada and my grandma sailed on her in 1964. it was sold to carnival and became carnival’s first ship. they renamed her mardi gras, and later was sold to three other lines, and renamed lucky star, star of texas, olympic, apollo and finally apollon. she was scrapped in 2003.
When I am on a boat, I want to know that I am at sea, in every way. I have cruised many times, and I can say that I detest the glassed-in feeling of most ships, and also the fully-lighted shit. Make a space, on such a magnificent ship, where people can feel like they are actually where they are: Upon the ocean, especially at night.
You need to be on a much smaller boat if you want it to feel like you're on the ocean. The cruise ships are designed to feel like floating cities of things for guests to do while taking them from port to port. They have stabilizers to prevent guests from feeling the impact of the waves as much. They design the ship so that it's lighted from the outside as much as possible, but without the impact of the elements. None of this is designed to give you an authentic feeling of being on the ocean. The best for this would be smaller ships without the stabilizers and more designed for a sailing experience (rather than floating city).
Try a transatlantic ocean liner like Cunards QM2 or QE2 if you want a ship that has modern features but still holds a bit of the old class elements from transatlantic oceanliners during the Golden age of ocean transportation.

“Carnival stuck to ships they knew would work” this would’ve worked no other cruise ship has some of these features this ship would be a gold mine for carnival
biska131 this moment reminds me of that meme. “If you’re homeless, just buy a house. Duh” and so thanks to that thing I saw on the internet. Just get money and then they can build it
I'm wondering if Carnival was smart in their decision to just create simple ships. I'm guessing it makes sense because they're the mainstream cheap cruise line, and if they created a major luxury ship like the Pinnacle, especially nowadays, it probably wouldn't have been successful. Prices would skyrocket and Carnival would risk losing its place in the cruise line market.
I think they were smart to be conservative- if not intuitive at the least. The economy hadn't even seriously tanked yet at the time they priced the Pinnacle. By 2008- the industry would be speculating about the stability of Carnival with over a billion dollars spent on such a risky project, and ostracizing the company for not knowing better- which would have affected the launch of the ship. I seriously do hope to see a ship so spectacular launched at some point though. It seems like a floating, luxury hotel!
It's smart because of the fact that they own all these other cruise lines. They keep Carnival as kind of the Wal-Mart of cruise lines while letting their other lines specialize in different demographics. That said, they don't really have a line that Project Pinnacle would have really fit, and that's something that they're missing. They probably could use a line that competes against Royal Caribbean in sheer boldness of size and design. They could have redefined one of their lines (if not Carnival itself) as that type of line with Project Pinnacle, but instead they chose to maintain the status quo. At some point, that may come back to bite them. RCL is currently the fastest grown cruise company.
@@basscadet75 I'm a fan of both CCL and RCL, really wish Carnival went through with this, while Oasis class is great, they have flaws (very small buffet for capacity, no people mover system for size of ship, bad pool deck with way too small pools, too small solorum area, use of salt water instead of fresh in pools), would've been nice to see if carnival did these things better. RCL did fix the buffet size on the new Wonder of the Seas by moving it down to deck 15 although I haven't been on wonder yet so I can't personally attest to it being "fixed"
Raw Toast I went on the Allure of the Seas and I agree. They are great oceangoing vessels. You don't feel like your on a ship unless its in shallow water.
These ships are just too large. I even think that the Disney fantasy might be a tad to large. They just have too many people on board. You most likely will never get to do any of the most popular attractions on the boat because of the thousands on board. You want to be on vacation with your family not with 5000 other people you're rubbing elbows with
Adam Gonzales I think the Disney Fantasy is right on the edge of being too large. The only problems that ship ever has with passenger crowding is the family pool deck. I think it does a great job everywhere else though.
Bright Sun Films I completely agree. When I went everyone only had elbow room in hat pool. It's disappointing that with the increased scale of the ship they didn't enlarge the to accommodate.
I went on HAL last April on their Eurodam ship and I fell in love with the size of it. Completely different experience than the massive (not even the biggest) Independence of the Seas in terms of crowds. Never felt crowded on the Eurodam. It's HAL of course dedicated to the elderly, but as a teen bringing my best friends, it was actually a fantastic cruise. We loved it more than the Independence. The Eurodam's docked next to the Indy in Port Everglades and it's crazy seeing the size difference.
I could be wrong, but I think this might be the first time Jake got himself a primary source for a video. If so this was the moment BSF went from good to GREAT. Love the dedication and love this channel 💜
just realized 3/4 Disney cruises have a carnival cruise with the same name!?! edit- slightly confused with the replies. I was simply pointing out that some of the cruises have the same name. why are people arguing about which is superior??
2 more currently being built. But I wouldn't say Disney isn't dedicated to its cruise line. Their cruises are amazing. Top notch service, in my opinion. Can't say that about Carnival.
I've been on carnival and Disney and Disney is far superior the staff were extremely nice and helpful, the service was great, and it had so much to do. The carnival that I went on had tiny rooms, rude staff, and okay service compared to Disney.
You should do a canceled video on the Super conducting super collider which was going to be built out side of Dallas Texas in the 1980's and was going to be bigger than the Large Hadron Collider in Europe. Btw love the video
thisismysea well yeah but I don't think it as far out as infrastructure projects. Which would bore most people but I feel like science stuff would interest a lot.
That said, I found this channel through an interest in urban exploring and amusement parks but I've gotten super into the retail stories thanks to the awesome quality of the videos. So, I don't doubt Jake and co. could branch out in any direction and it'd be just as fascinating as everything else they do.
The bigger problem than ship construction was port improvements. The Oasis class ships can't just go to every port. Royal Caribbean spent a fortune improving the ports for those ships. It was a big investment. I'm glad they did it because I went for a cruise on the Harmony and it was fantastic!!!
Do a cancelled/abandoned episode on the Boeing YAL-1. It's military not commercial but still interesting. It was designed with a huge missile destroying laser.
To note, the Queen Mary 2 is an oceanliner, not a cruise ship. Most websites will separate oceanliners and cruise ships from one another. If putting both into the same category, it should be Passenger Ship.
Just as that -- A passenger ferry. It's still well behind the major cruise ships and oceanliners, at 2166 passengers and crew. But it's definitely a record holder.
Matthew Rosenblatt Largest boat I've ever been on, or am likely to be. I live in Ireland, and visit Britain by Sail&Rail most years. Never been on a cruise ship.
Ended up reaching out to Mr. Farcus after watching this interview last month and was pleasantly surprised to hear back. I can attest that he is an absolute gem of a man and a master of his craft. Whether you're a fan like myself of the elaborate and vividly colorful charm or find it a bit overwhelming like some do, there is no denying that it immediately engages a reaction. That connection of creation to sense and emotion is, at the very definition, art. When life gives you a boat you gotta rock it sometimes. Joe has a book out called Design on the High Seas which is a fantastic read about the person,, art and history all bound together with wit and wisdom.
This video has a very practical use for me as I drive for a car service in Cocoa Beach transporting people form Port Canaveral to hotels and such. Thanks so much.
OK but imagine a survival horror game set on a Pinnacle-class cruise ship, trying to evade some kind of Thing-like monsters that have taken over the vessel. Restoring power to the people-movers to access different areas of the ship, using the rear water slides to escape from a massive creepy fleshbeast, all while trying to determine just what the hell is going on. Like Dead Space, but more like Dead Concept.
I don't like Carnival as a corporation, although I don't think the vast majority of people working for it are malevolent or corrupt. Like any company, I just think it's so big that safety issues and other problems just slip through the cracks. I've heard of some shady companies that have had some pretty nasty things happen (Enron, DOSCO/SYSCO, Knowledge House, ect.) but Carnival just creeps me the hell out. I just recently watched the video uploaded by Bright Sun Films of the Costa Concordia and it seems that there've been quite a few incidents of some magnitude that this company has tainting its past. :\
Beautiful designed as it is, and the engineering marvel it would have been, I'm kind of glad it never got built. Normal cruise ships are kind of horrible for the environment, and something this large would have compounded this problem tenfold.
This ship was so awesome. I would totally go on one again. I was on the Carnival Miracle going from California to Mexico. The crew was fantastic and the food was great. Chinese, Mexican, Salad Bar, Italian, Pizza, And the best was the steak house.
+1 on the people mover system for Royal Caribbean lol. I went on Harmony of the Seas a couple months ago, and it easily took at least 20 minutes to walk from the back to the front at a normal pace. An absolutely HUGE ship, and also probably the best week of my life so far.
4exgold Disney Cruise is very expensive though... I booked a standard balcony room and it cost about 1,300 per person! This cruise is during fall too not summer! Lol
Disney hit the waters in 1998, and quickly rose to the top due to their intuitive and extraordinary guest service. A Disney cruise is considered a 'luxury' cruise at any price point and their vacation experiences do tend to be pricey most of the season.
In my opinion usually Carnival is preferred due to the price, but Carnival has a small amount of 'dream ships' which are quite amazing as they have the fun of a Royal Caribbean with less than 5000000000 people xD

I love your vids. The outro for this one was perfectly selected, caught me off-guard, good stuff.
If only this were made by Disney and had a high school built into it. Then it would be perfect!
Silver Skel Yes
Otaking Mikohani they could just like the Suite of Zach and Cody
Ewww a school on a cruise ship
Stek TV Do you seriously not get the joke
Disney are pedophiles that destroy movies.
I've been on the Oasis of the Seas.
And, well, HOLY SHIT IS IT BIG.
Raw Toast I went on the Allure of the Seas and I agree. They are great oceangoing vessels. You don't feel like your on a ship unless its in shallow water.
why swallow water?
lol shallow
Raw Toast A fellow toast is spotted
Cant blame, carnival owns it.
These ships are just too large. I even think that the Disney fantasy might be a tad to large. They just have too many people on board. You most likely will never get to do any of the most popular attractions on the boat because of the thousands on board. You want to be on vacation with your family not with 5000 other people you're rubbing elbows with
Adam Gonzales after being on an oasis class ship, I fully agree. Anything bigger than freedom/maybe quantum class is too big for me.
+Ajax No.
Carnival: Cancel it
Royal Caribbean: we'll call it our oasis class
I could be wrong, but I think this might be the first time Jake got himself a primary source for a video. If so this was the moment BSF went from good to GREAT. Love the dedication and love this channel 💜
It looks like apartments on a ship. lol
just realized 3/4 Disney cruises have a carnival cruise with the same name!?!
edit- slightly confused with the replies. I was simply pointing out that some of the cruises have the same name. why are people arguing about which is superior??
AvaB815 Disney isn't completely dedicated to it's cruise line, actual cruise line companies have a ton of ships on the sea, Disney only has 4
2 more currently being built. But I wouldn't say Disney isn't dedicated to its cruise line. Their cruises are amazing. Top notch service, in my opinion. Can't say that about Carnival.
mswhittaker231 i agree I've been on 2 disney cruises and the food, service, and activities are absolutely exceptional unlike carnivals cheap ships
I've been on carnival and Disney and Disney is far superior the staff were extremely nice and helpful, the service was great, and it had so much to do. The carnival that I went on had tiny rooms, rude staff, and okay service compared to Disney.
MatthewJA94 Disney has superior free buffets and dinners on their cruise line and better service and entertainment
You should do a canceled video on the Super conducting super collider which was going to be built out side of Dallas Texas in the 1980's and was going to be bigger than the Large Hadron Collider in Europe. Btw love the video
Or the Texas Triangle High speed rail project.
wolfbyte3171 that would be good however it never got as far as the collider. They built the tunnels and everything and then scrapped it.
That seems pretty different than the entertainment and retail kinds of topics usually covered on this channel.
thisismysea well yeah but I don't think it as far out as infrastructure projects.
I love how these people that were leaders or heads of what you’re talking about are willing to speak about it. That’s cool great work!
Imagine being trapped in the monorail as the ship sank or lost power 💀 (as u can tell I’ve somehow got onto a sinking ship thread and is paranoid)
That's what happened with the _Costa Concordia._
Several people in the elevator when power went.
Ship sank slowly too.
What a hell a way to die...
@@kjj26k damn, bloody Schettino
You actually made it to the trending board. Big ups mate.
WHAT A FANTASTIC VIDEO
Sympathy of the Seas? Hehe--it's Symphony! 9:26
I never knew this existed! Thanks for teaching me something new 😁❤️
Thanks for specifying the outro song, not only you run an awesome channel, you're also a good person in general
You would have need to spent a month on this thing just to probably see half of it
How in the world do you only have 200k subs u deserve 1Million my god
RamenNinja More than double now at 453K
Wow. Imagine if Carnival had built this ship. Thanks for posting this video
0:20 I genuinely never realized I was in this video until today lmao
The bigger problem than ship construction was port improvements. The Oasis class ships can't just go to every port. Royal Caribbean spent a fortune improving the ports for those ships. It was a big investment. I'm glad they did it because I went for a cruise on the Harmony and it was fantastic!!!
Do a cancelled/abandoned episode on the Boeing YAL-1. It's military not commercial but still interesting. It was designed with a huge missile destroying laser.
Now the pinnacle has been reborn in the new XL class of carnival ships like “Mardi Gras”
The funnel and the Sharpe of the ship yes
I realised how poor I am.
CarlosFoxyBonnie Pines45 *me as well*
*me aswell*
you're a very good filmmaker. i wish your videos were around when i was in highschool
Splendid video dude. Lots of work you put into this. Thank you.
To note, the Queen Mary 2 is an oceanliner, not a cruise ship. Most websites will separate oceanliners and cruise ships from one another. If putting both into the same category, it should be Passenger Ship.
Also, you say "Sympathy of the Seas", it's Symphony.
Matthew Rosenblatt How would you classify the Ulysses? I believe it's the world's largest passenger ferry.
You should do a video on Camp Snoopy.
oh, did they take that out? That was my childhood man, lol
TheJrbdog They still have it at Cedar Point.
Smasher 1303 I had no idea Camp Snoopy was owned by Cedar Fair. I thought it was a one-off thing at the MOA ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Is that the camp where Snoop Dogg invites people to smoke weed with him for like a week?
Sorry just had to.
TheJrbdog Yeah, a lot of things are like that with Cedar Fair. I think they also have one at Knott's Berry Farm.
The New MSC Seaside looks so much like The Pinnacle. Especially the back of the ship.
Yo Jake awesome video. Love your narration. Simply splendid!
I just got off the triumph. Her last sail. She will be docked forever and remodeled, and renamed to *Sunrise*.
Bootlicker
Do They Actually Have A Ship Called Ecstasy? 0:39
Aero yes!!!!! That’s the ship I was on a year ago
Aero yep!!
yeah ive been on ecstasy
@@ashleyjohansson230 Same
Ecstasy is just drugs nickname.
I think this will come around later on in the future
Wow! That would of been a awesome ship. Great job on getting the interview on this.
This video has a very practical use for me as I drive for a car service in Cocoa Beach transporting people form Port Canaveral to hotels and such. Thanks so much.
Royal Caribbean should buy this idea from Carnival and build it themselves
The rear reminds me of the Freedom Ship.
This is still my favorite episode :)
Yo this guy designed the first cruise ship I've ever been on.. The Carnival Miracle
These videos are so awesome! Thanks for making them. I haven’t left my couch in hours 😂
Now we have a thing called Symphony Of The Seas
i thought i was on the subscription list but i was wrong. JAKE YOUR TRENDING!
+Nakai AYYYY
Bright Sun Films AND FOR YOU TO REPLY! WHAT!!!
Is it hard to get ahold of these people in the interviews??
XBOYS Yes.
Bright Sun Films yay I love when my hero ignores me 🙄. Hahaha 😂. Have fun in Detroit mate.
Bright Sun Films now that this video is trending I feel like a god
Great video, Jake, very well put together! :)
9:28
Sympathy of the seas. Interesting.
Why does everyone keep saying sympathy😂😂😂😂😂 Sympthony
Never felt so sad for ships in my life
Titanic?
I don't like Carnival as a corporation, although I don't think the vast majority of people working for it are malevolent or corrupt. Like any company, I just think it's so big that safety issues and other problems just slip through the cracks. I've heard of some shady companies that have had some pretty nasty things happen (Enron, DOSCO/SYSCO, Knowledge House, ect.) but Carnival just creeps me the hell out. I just recently watched the video uploaded by Bright Sun Films of the Costa Concordia and it seems that there've been quite a few incidents of some magnitude that this company has tainting its past. :\
RC Icon of the Seas blows this project away in today’s world.
That slide at the end of the boat scares me so much. Imagine going too fast or something goes wrong and whoosh, you’re in the cold, ocean water.😦
I actually just saw this video after disembarking from the carnival vista, no joke
No One its a nice ship, if you do go there try farenheight 555, best steak house ive been to
I went to carnival breeze
I went on carnival magic and carnival valor and next year I’m going to go on carnival vista
They missed out big, pinnacle would've been a high demand ship to be on.
Beautiful designed as it is, and the engineering marvel it would have been, I'm kind of glad it never got built. Normal cruise ships are kind of horrible for the environment, and something this large would have compounded this problem tenfold.
Pretentious af
Sunny Lavellan I was mostly concerned whether it would have been able to go through the Panama Canal or not lol
Guess how your computer from china got here. And everything else you own.
I enjoy Royal Caribbean more though
Cameron Bartie same
Carnival = walmart in a nutshell in terms of cruises...
Cameron Bartie just becauase y'all are rich dose not mean carnivals are bad they are the fun cruiseships and they are really fun 😤😠😒
Lori Rodriguez They Never Said That Carnival Was a bad cruiseline
Enjoy paying 7.95 for room service.
Royal Caribbean is upmarket cruises and Carnival is more on the budget end i'm guessing?
4exgold yes, but Disney is the best cruise line. They're above Royal Caribbean.
R.J. i didnt even know Disney did cruises
In my opinion usually Carnival is preferred due to the price, but Carnival has a small amount of 'dream ships' which are quite amazing as they have the fun of a Royal Caribbean with less than 5000000000 people xD
where..... is the guy with the briefcase on a people mover at sea tryna go???
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.
