ChesterCopperpot5 I couldn’t agree with you more sir. Been on the premium since it was red. Best 12 bucks I spend every month hands down.
Did you happen to record the band after them? (Drivin N Cryin).
Thank you for the video it's making my morning 🌄
That audience had no idea what they were witnessing. Biblical.
Bingo. Lights out.
I knew who Dave was because I had seen him perform solo at Trax before, but I did not realize he had a band. We were also also all tripping on shrooms...
@@leenew9175 Yeah, its funny Lee, I saw them behind a frat house with a hundred people or so, and actually I was at almost every Van ripers before 91
We DID! I still have my bootleg cassette tape from that day. The hair on my body stood up when I heard DMB that day.
Just thinking the same thing.
No one is looking at their phones and taking pics and vids...just purely enjoying the moment.
I left my banana phone plugged in at home that day
Omg I was THERE and I still have my BOOTLEG cassette tape from that day! Good times. Thank you for sharing!
Wow! That's awesome you got to see them so early on! Did you collect/still have a collection of tapes or just this show? I've actually been on a bit of a hunt trying to track down 91/92/93 shows that were passed around on cassette in the early years that didn't get digitized. If you still have a set and could ever snap a quick photo I'd love to check em for rarities. Thanks for the comment either way!!
@@Copperpot5 you are amazing for doing that! I just have the one cassette from that day. We were SO SPOILED because we got to see them EVERY SINGLE WEDNESDAY! Those were some EPIC times!
@@Copperpot5 I also have a DMB T-Shirt from a Brown’s Island concert in 1993 on which Dave wrote to “keep swallowing, but only the good stuff” (or something like that). 😂
I saw him at JMU about a month before. I didn’t make this show :(
I just remember thinking how tight this band was. The sound was amazing. Back in Tennessee, no one really knew this band at this point. I have been hooked ever since
Do you remember what the weather was like ?
Gosh. Leroi, shredding. It’s crazy how talented they ALL were at their individual discipline. To this day carter is considered one of the better drummers around. Steph was a prodigy when he joined and still slaps with the best and who ever heard of a 6’2 ish black dude that looks like an NFL wide receiver strait SLAAAAAAYING the fiddle/violin. Love this band. Their live shows are borderline religious experiences.
CORRECTION, Carter is The best drummer around period! I've always thought he had 8 arms. Turns out he only has 2!
Great comment :)
I've always said going to a DMB concert was a spiritual experience. So weird how some people get it and some dont
The fiddle player has always stunk.
Can’t get my mind around the fact that these songs will be played in front of 20k+ audiences for the next 30 years. Shows that there’s not always a correlation between a small audience and venue and the quality of the music.
No, it shows how insidious the mind laundering is
I graduated that year !! I didn’t know about DMB till 2001 when my wife and I saw him live in our hometown SA Tx the outside venue. Amphitheater which is no longer open and DMB never returned I miss the 90’s It’s 2024 and now I play most of his music on guitar Thank you Dave !! Hope to see you live one day
I was there! I knew who Dave was because I had seen him perform solo at Trax before, but I did not realize he had a band. We were also also all tripping on shrooms...
Sounds like an amazing time!
Are you the tripper in the purple poncho at 23:59
Heard! I snuck in that one carrying an empty bass guitar case! Ended up living as the crow flies about 600 yd away killed my first grouse in the parking lot by the lake which they filled in unfortunately. Of course like everyone else I was day hammered and they had the nitrous balloons and whatnot but I'm so glad that somebody put that on here because it's so cool being at that show and him saying this is by far the biggest venue like you I've seen them at tracks and at Miller's and across the street the old Monticello dairy. But a lot of people don't remember widespread panic was there new potato caboose there was a there was some good damn talent there that day!
This original poster died this year.
Happy trails Lee and see you over there

The experience of a DMB concert live is similar to what a spiritual experience would be like. Can't describe it. It's an amazing feeling and no drugs needed.
The fidelity of this live show is amazing. This sounds very close to a studio recording. What a great band. The first time I heard DMB I was hooked. This guy is seriously loaded with talent (along with his bandmates).
The sound guys are the unrecognized heros of these ‘90s live show recordings
Best musicians, best fans, best origin story, best ongoing continuing unfettered brilliance. Dave, he is only the most unique and down to earth talented and determined artist ever. My sons name is Carter. My daughters name is Charlotte (hmmmmm.....wonder why?). I was hooked in 1995 when I was sitting in LA traffic and Ants Marching came on the radio. I was immediately in a trance and in musical love, until I realized all the honking was at me because I had literally forgotten I was driving and was air drumming and dancing like a crazy person. Tried to shout out my window, but didn’t want to miss the DJ say who the band was. He didn’t, I raced home, made about 5 phone calls about a song called “Ants Marching” and found out it was DMB. Have been a die hard fan since. The soundtrack of my life, and lucky enough to meet a girl who felt same way. Of course, “You and Me” was our first dance at our wedding, and she walked down the aisle to “Dreamgirl”. Thank you so much ChesterCopperpot. My life was changed forever when I discovered Dave and the guys. Amen. Keep doin it guys, you just get better and better. So much to say about how much I love them. Ok, back to listening to this amazing concert. Just thought I’d share.
It blows me away how much this music means to you! Beautiful story
These beautiful people of 1992 enjoying a beautiful day with beautiful music, my heart grieves for simpler times
this blows my mind that this even exists. Amazing. thank you as always for your efforts Chester. 🔥 since the jump.
It blows my mind that we have access to bands early years like this. I used to call and hope the radio would just play a song I liked so I could hear it
Dancing crowd gets bigger in every song. That's destiny unfolded.
Yeah, I was there selling beer for the Nelson County Education Foundation. 30 years ago. In 2019 I got to thank Dave for his foundation, Bama Works, ongoing support of so many local charities and causes. The band has been so generous in giving back. Bless them all and all those early fans wearing dem ugly sweaters!
Fuck. I miss Leroi 😭. This vid is literally liquid gold
Awesome how the crowd realized they were in the presence of a great band beginning.
boyds tripping billies solo was as epic 30 years ago as it is today. Legend.
So weird to actually see myself in this video. That was a good day! I still have the ticket stub. Blues Traveler was the headliner. Other bands were Indecision, Dave Matthews, and Wolves in the kitchen.
Awesome you were there!! Did you attend UVA? Any chance you taped or collected tapes back in those days? Always looking for rarities (audio)....
@@Copperpot5 I went to college in DC, but my good friends went to UVA so we drove down there a lot and went to a couple of Van Riper's fests. I didn't tape, sadly. Went to a ton of Dead shows during college- including the Hampton Warlocks shows... those were fun!
Where exactly was this stage located at the lake?
@@richtysarczyk8702 you could see it from the actual venue they moved it around a lot because that was the first year they started having a beer garden so instead of like buying beer going back to the front of the stage where you you know your crew was that all changed and because of insurance they drained that lake so drunk people wouldn't get up in it because it happened before and other the vets so they actually drained it then they actually filled it in but I always wondered this guy that's right when it begins I snuck in because I lived around the area and I just I knew the guys from tracks and Millers in Charlottesville downtown,
So if you watch the first opening song of the first set watch Carter look to his left and he takes this black bag and moves it from his left side to his right side because I was acting for I was really dayhammered and everybody had mushrooms that day and I took that guitar case and a battery for some reason and acted like I was doing something like I was part of the crew and Carter said Steve what the f*** are you doing I said I'll trade this battery with what you got in that black bag he goes up and he went over like that and then he start looking at his you know getting his s*** together and right before he starts playing you watch him look to the left he goes you crazy as s*** you are crazy as hell and he laughed and then he just started in it it was awesome and I forgot about indecision being there I thought I'd watch a different one but anyway if you want to finish this book Stephen King's The stand going on here this guy if you watch him at the beginning it's just a cup like four girls dancing and my boy man in the blue I mean purple you can see and he turns totally is back to the band and he was like oh f*** and I heard him say that stuff with him later on whatever you do man I've got to get back to school and he went to Hampton Sydney and so we got this damn case of beer unfolded it and I didn't have a pen of course and this girl cuz I have lipstick and we just laid him up the closest at the edge of when you leave van drivers which is 250 and I put Hampton on there and I forgot to write Sydney so he probably was like I don't know oh no I shouldn't have left him like that we just propped it up to him he would he was not responsive he just laid there I mean he wasn't like narcan thing like that he was just way drunk mushroomed out man 3-day b**** all right anyway bye I'm sure you got there I didn't see him on any milk cartons
I was in my early 20s, brings back so many memories of an easier time.
Any chance you collected tapes back in the day?
I was hooked from the beginning
I remember trading all these shows on message boards back in the late 90s early 2000s. It’s crazy to see you still uploading videos decades later.
Ha! Me too, sending blank tapes all over the country…and getting them back!
Its crazy to hear how these songs developed over the years
not really except the fact that dave didnt remember alot of lyrics or hadnt written them all
man, they've always been great and he's always been Dave.
Amazing footage and audio for 1992. The best part is seeing all the beautiful ladies gettin down in the front row. Makes me miss the 90's and just going to live concerts period. This 2020 and its Coronavirus quarantine rules can go to hell. I'm so glad I got to go see Dave in the 1990's.
well... we "had our whole life ahead of us" then.. and they have been the soundtrack of my whole Life. DMB 4 RRHOF 2022!
Dave rockin that beret!
Thanks for posting this absolute gem!!!!
Saw them last night in PA. 6/23/23. Amazing show!!!!!
Sound Is Incredible! Especially around/after the 4:30 part of the video, you really hear it.
Many people at the festival were well aware of who Dave Matthews was, as he was a local star by then, as well as the musicians in his band.
Afton, is basically in Charlottesville’s backyard, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing and what a treasure, and a awesome view into the early career of the Dave Matthews Band.
This puts a smile on my face that is stuck !!!
Can't believe they've been doing these shows since before I was born in May '92
Im really happy to come by the video. Its astonishing. I was 12 when this happened, and lived in Arizona. I was given a bootleg to listen to by a friend of a friend in 1993, listened to it and my friends made fun of me for liking it because it had a violin and a sax. So after listening for a week i made a copy and gave it back. Lost the copy within a few months and then watched as they hit it big. I thought fir years I was early to hear them, yet I wasnt even close! Jealous of the memories of these people in attendance.
Thanks for posting this! Sure took me back! This is when DMB was truly great. I saw them live for the first time on NYE 1994 in Hampton, VA at a Marriott hotel ballroom with about 200 people, and it was the best show I’ve ever been to. I love every song from those early albumns, Remember 2 Things, Under the Table and Beyond These Crowded Streets. Every time I hear one of those songs, it takes me back to my college days! Thanks again for the stroll down memory lane.
"The cannabis smelled for miles and the granola was plentiful" idk 🤭😁😁
This guy is amazing grounded and a flat out superstar what’s the problem Wake up rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame get this guy in
Why would he deserve a Rock and roll Hall of Fame for a thirty people in the audience early 90s band..they don't give them out to just any old band and some poverty stricken festival in the middle of the woods outside Charlottsville, VA aka the District of Podunk Sticksville
@@coletanner5193 Have you ever been to a Dave Matthews concert you idiot he sells out 20,000+ one of the best performers yes And yes he loves playing personal venues small venues also he’s great and yes he deserves the Hall of Fame get your facts straight idiot

I was there! Never missed a Van Riper's. And DMB every Tuesday night at Trax!
Amazing! I have a few UVA friends who were able to catch them back in the day. Is there any chance you collected audio tapes of shows? Longshot, but I'm a big DMB media collector - I'm still trying to track down some lost 91/92/93 show recordings. Thx for the comment either way!
@@Copperpot5 I used to have some back in the day, but they're long since gone. I have the Live Trax #37 from the Trax show in November '92, but anyone can get that.
I remember that day like it was yesterday. That was my first DMB show by default. I was there to see Guster. It was am awesome festival. I have not missed a DMB show since that day
This is the coolest ugly sweater party I have ever seen.
Lol you're right. How I didn't notice haha
carter and dave were a match made in heaven carter was made for dave’s kind of writing he knows exaclty when to emphasize certain beats and all the stops he creates in between dave’s crazy arrangements. he was perfect for this band
All video was amazing. Starting with the small soundcheck. Truly amazing to see our Loved dmb on their early years.!!!!
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
What I wouldn't pay to go back in time to this concert knowing what I know now.
Absolutely!
It's so nice seeing people letting loose and showing out with zero intentions of uploading it to social media.
so weird to hear them playing these massive DMB staples and people just standing there lol
27:34 Carter hits that roll so effortlessly! Such an unbelievable drummer!!
1:02:26 And this one as well!
He's a gift to music, a Demi-god on drums.
Then there's the rest of the band, great in their own way too.
Such a shame they crumbled the way they did.
What was I doing in 1992?
I was about 15 y/o, oblivious of this amazing band.
I can’t remember when or how I became a fan, but I’m so glad I got to see them I’m my generation.
What would you pay to go back in time - attending this with the appreciation we currently have for this amazing band. I’d be front and center, waiting for the setlist! 😂
DM has cheekbones!! Also...pre cell phones...everyone just enjoying the experience as it happens. Thanks for posting.
16:16 it was so great to see him face the moment he felt comfortable on stage. He’s talked about his stage anxiety. I’d never seen it. I was like oh no what happened to the band, I didn’t see but I see them now. His anxiety is coming out of his quirky words. Two step was rough. But I feel like I saw the shift in him and as soon as he relaxed the rest of the band did to. This was fantastic. His shows are over done and dry we all sing. I realized it when I was listening with my daughter in the car. At the end I said why’d they cut the applause short? She said there’s no applause. That’s when I realized I hear the live versions whether they play or not. The concerts are only interesting for his covers. Hes doing let’s dance, and its amazing
Great to see this. Funny....at first the crowd is like what is this music....by midway in....up and dancing...hahah! That's Dave!
I saw them in 1994 at the TLA in Philly, friend had an extra ticket and I had no idea who they were. But became a fan after that.- Only regret perhaps is I was right up against the stage, no camera..never thought to bring on at any concert back then And at the time.. there were certainly no camera / video phones! But this is incredible.
Just imagine the lucky ones who were at this - tiny venue, [looks like a ] small park atmosphere, small crowd..pretty damn intimate.
Many perhaps not knowing who this guy, the band is like myself . Sure not knowing that they would end up playing big venues in 3 years, massive stadiums in front of 60, 70K people by the end of the decade. And STILL selling out big shows in 2018.
I knew it was Chester Copperpot when I saw the yellow text at the beginning.
These guys were born to play together. Wonder if they would consider Van Ripers in the future 😁Thank you so much for this awesome video!!!!
this is fantastic to see. Thank you for posting this. Amazing to see these early days.
This is freaking gold.
Everybody gave Boyd when it came to that hat he was wearing that day. By the way stephon looks so healthy back then.
But when they said something about the hat to me and what I thought cuz everybody had an opinion I said I think it's just too cheap to get a damn haircut and man everybody rolled even Boyd! he just sold that damn joint he had over in Virginia
Stafan
the audio on this is incredible... thanks so much for posting.. LOVING it!!!!!!
ducker030 I was just thinking the same. They were definitely plugged in.
The headlining band watching Dave open for them.... "We're fucked."
Amazing video!! Anyone notice something missing? No phones! Everyone is just focused on the show and enjoying it without worry.
chestercopperpot, thanks for sharing so many video clips of this amazing band over the years. this was about 3 years before I ever heard or saw this band. now 27 years later, I still can't get enough of their music on a daily basis and live in concert. Videos like this are very special, thank you.
He went on a college tour about a year later. I saw him at Sewanee possibly twice in 1993.
Holy shite. This is a real gem of a video.
This is amazing. Thank you
Early 90s style FTW. lol
Two years later on this date we lose Kurt. Thanks for all this great dmb and all you do, kind Sir! :)
I always pass up open bands, open plays etc. Who knows where they'll be in the future. Like this. I'm going to stop and just hang for a bit because if they do, it will be a memory to remember. 1992, I was 11.
Thank you for this!
My dream playlist by my favorite band. Awesome video!
Was super fortunate to see DMB a year later for $5.00 from the rooftop of our frat house. Still awesome to see today, but this brings back incredible memories
Boyd with the dance moves and stefan on the left and keyboard dude on the right - wow !
chris clifford the keyboard dude is Butch Taylor I believe.
Keyboardist is Peter Griesar. Butch didn't join the band until ... i think 1998?
Stefan is not in his correct position! Thanks for this. Awesome to see!
Van Ripers is an amazing thing to look back on..
i just wish I could give more than 1 thumbs up
The best show ever! Thank you!
good video, thanks for sharing!
Can’t help but keep coming back to this set
It’s amazing to me that when the music industry tells us all what is great, it’s then that we come out in droves to observe and dance and love our bands. But until then, it’s a party with two people dancing. Not a negative comment, just an observation. This is one of my favorite songs by DMB…but I wonder if I love it because I heard it after they were one of the most popular bands in America. Had I of heard it prior, who knows. I’d like to think it would have made the same impression. The industry certainly allows some of the best kept secrets to be unveiled to the masses.
very good point
I love how by the end, everyone is up dancing around
You can’t help it when you’re participating in a religious experience
Carters kit has grown since then!
Rotti-X
And Dave can afford high end guitars now.
Pure magic! Thank you

@@Copperpot5 No, we just heard about it and decided to go.
I lived just around the corner from Van Riper's. This was the day before my 10th birthday and I distinctly remember all the cars pouring in that day and the music. Was feeling nostalgic so I drove by Van Riper's on Saturday. It's a long shot but I really hope Boyd makes an appearance at the Virginia shows.
Where is Van Ripers? It's not on any map.
35:36 We all know he messed up the lyrics, timing and measures, yet still kept his cool and Carter kept in it to make sure everyone came in at the right time. That's how you keep composure and not sweat it. Especially back the, no one would have known the miss steps.
My FAVORITE version of Lover Lay Down is from this show
There's alot of great things about this, Song That Jane Likes is so gorgeous.
48:00 is the best though, Boyd breaks out the dance moves
Heavenly
Let's not forget New Potato Caboose, Indecision, AAE, etc..
Many great bands played at Van Ripers
Wow!
What a treasure.
The women that got up there and started dancing are among the first to feel the distinct energy this band brings.
Like maybe its me being bias but if I had seen these dudes perform you could tell there was something different about stage presence, musical talent and lyrical talent that would make me think they could be big. They were just different
A rock band with a sax and violin. There was nothing like that mainstream at the time. It did exist in Nashville, St Louis, New Orleans and a few other cities but there was no national stage for more strings and winds except the typical 5 piece rock band - singer, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass, and sometimes keyboard.
awesome....
Oh Boyd! 😂😂😂
I'm going to miss that cat this summer... 😩
I can't lie, I'm holding out hope that he shows up late July in Tampa! #fingerscrossed
He can't hold on to his bow, perhaps arthritis😭
Wasn’t he fighting this back in the 2016 summer tour. I thought I saw somewhere that he was in a lot of pain during that tour
I was hoping he'd show up at the Hollywood Bowl.
Y’all do know he was fired from the band right? He won’t be appearing lol
This is too much. No pun intended. So young. I remember them playing in Tuscaloosa around this time but I never saw them there. I wish I had. I associated them with frat dudes. Not all but some.
