Oh Andy! A friend has gifted me a 221 Featherweight...& a week later my sister acquired one as well. We are so excited to open them up and see what kind of shape they are in. Mine has been stored for 10-15 years so I know its going to need some cleaning and lubrication but its a one owner & was much loved by its owner. Happy New Year to us down here in Texas!

@@user-ke3yv7lc4l What a bargain! I appreciate that you want to rescue these machines. Once you start you will be fine. I have found it's hard to hurt a vintage Singer machine if you take your time.
      May I offer some suggestions?
Over the years I have found that the Service Manuals (when available) are wonderful tools to have on hand for understanding adjustments and factory settings.
For your 221 featherweight you have a great resource at "The Featherweight Shop" here: singer-featherweight.com/
If you look in their "School House" section you can find free manuals, including the Service Manual. They have tutorials for different parts and systems on the machine. A family-owned business with a sparkling worldwide reputation.
My Playlist for the 221 can be found here: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKIA1OPw0k6QOSTE-wAUZ4kp
For your Rocketeers, you can download a FREE copy of the Service Manual for the 500A & 503A models. An incredible 46-page PDF full of diagrams and instructions for lubrication, use, adjusting, and parts replacement, with clear factory setting spacing, timing, height clearance, etc. sewingdude.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/singer-500-service-manual.pdf
Here are some of my Playlists that may help you with your Rocketeers:
      a short list of 500A videos: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKIk6-t-zdVJKQVVAE6TjrE-
A Playlist for Model 401A, the machine the 500A is based on, with many of the same parts & systems: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO
      A Playlist for model 503A Rocketeer: ruclips.net/p/PLsCOZgzzaiKJZaZn2zl3LsnV2d7UhrqvX
I try hard to make my videos clear enough that folks can use them to work on their machines, but you can't beat a document from the original manufacturer that explains so much.
Finally, you can download FREE PDF copies of most of the Singer Instruction Manuals from SInger Support. www.singer.com/support Just enter the model number in the big search box and a new page will open with any available manuals for download. I have an Instruction Manual available for every machine I work on. It can be helpful to understand how the machine is SUPPOSED to work, and all the settings when something is not working the way you want.
You really have a strong support group by your side between instruction and service manuals, my videos (and many others) on RUclips. Tap into your excitement and put your nervousness to the side. You'll have such fun and find working on the machines, and the results of your work, to be very rewarding.

Have you ever cleaned the inside of a machine that has a cloth timing belt? Any thoughts on how to do it?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  3 года назад +1

Are you talking about the cloth/fiber belt with metal cleats woven into it? No, I've never worked on a machine like that. I'd still use the Krud Kutter I think, after testing a drop on the belt. The instructions for the Krud Kutter Cleaner and Degreaser include the mixing rate for carpet, upholstery, and laundry presoak. A 10% solution. Here is the webpage for more info
www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/krud-kutter/cleaners-and-stain-removers/original-krud-kutter I've never used it but they make a sports stain remover laundry pre-treat also. I don't know if it is a different formula or just marketing but here is that webpage www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/krud-kutter/household-cleaners/sports-laundry-pre-treat?ls=305473&lc=
I'm assuming you want to clean the insides of the machine while leaving the belt in place
If you were taking the belt out, I would either replace it with a new one (after all that work) or still clean with the KK or even laundry detergent. Remember, I've never done this, but that's my thoughts about it. Make a video if you do it! Probably 1,000 people with the same question, right? Good luck.
