So cool to see his kids in the background doing homework. It's good to see you doing your thing and allowing your kids to witness instead of sending them off to their room or something.
Suggestion. Use a piece of scotch tape on the bottom of your presser foot instead of WD40. It works well with vinyls and leathers. WD40 will get on your other fabrics.
You can also use just wax paper over your fabrics. It tears out of your fabric stitching easily and that way you don't have to deal with taping your foot.
Depding on your machine you can get a teflon foot.. The underside of the foot is coated with a thing theflon coating that allows the fabric just to slide through.
I didn't even realize that this tutorial was 22 minutes until after I watched it... I'm glad you made it detailed and went through with every step. Some tutorialists worry there video is too long, dunno why. More of a villain myself, but I found this just as useful :D
+Scott Bayles Hi Scott. I'm Rob Meakin, I'm from England. I love this tutorial, it's very helpful and brilliant. I have a question/request to ask you. As well as superheroes, I'm also a big Star Wars fan and I have been planning to make two Jedi costumes: Luke Skywalker's from "Episode 6 Return of the Jedi" and Anakin Skywalker's from the "The Clone Wars". I have managed to find some sites where I can buy them but they are quite expensive, so as Plan B I've been thinking about making them. Could you please make a tutorial on how I can make Luke Skywalker's boots and Anakin Skywalker's boots? Again I have found some results where I can buy the boots but they are rather costly. Thank you for your time, please reply as soon as you can. Kind regards Rob Meakin
Finally found some amazing boot tutorials, thanks for the awesome video! Even though I'm 3 years late, it doesn't matter! Also the intro and outro music just melted my heart. I love Skillet.
Been trying to find boots at Goodwill and no luck. So this is actually really smart way of giving life to old shoes. Also if you handy you and leave excess trim and cut the sole off and glue it to the bottom of the new material. But most shoes inside soles are glued down. Use a multipurpose blade to cut the sole off. Use wing tabs to the bottom and shoe cement.
THANK YOU!!!!!! Sewing has always been the most intimidating skill of cosplay for me, but all of your videos have been more helpful than anything else I've found on the internet. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
Thank you so much for taking time to post this tutorial! Best, easiest cosplay boot pattern. EVER. Seriously, my son is going to flip out when he sees the finished product. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Hi, Scott! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've been wrecking my head in finding boots for a costume, and honestly this will help me a lot in creating my own pair. It's absolutely amazing how you did this! I'm a petite young woman; size 6 in woman's shoes and size 4 in men's. Since you're accustomed to make small shoes for your son: what is the recommended or slight estimate decrease to have a smaller scaled pattern? Thank you!
This was very helpful! I was using another tutorial which was confusing. This simplified a lot! I made a pattern for my boots by sticking my foot in a garbage bag and then wrapping in duct take. You then can cut it out and it's a perfect customized pattern for yourself that you can lay on fabric.
two suggestions in gerneal.. - Zipper by the yard, cheaper and you can make any length zipper you need. - heat the vinyl slightly; hair dryer or heat gun. It will let you shape it a little easier.
So, I believe if you're trying to scale the pattern size down, take your boot/shoe size and multiply by ten. If at scale 100 it'll fit a size 10, so if I scale it down to 80, it should fit a size 8. (at least, I think that's how it'll work)
Have you ever tried doing this with spandex type material? I ask cause there are tons of superheroes who's costumes look like the boots are attached to the costume in one whole piece
Hi Scott. Great video! I was curious about the excess zipper left over at the back and bottom of the boot. How did you trim that and keep it together? Is there a stopper to keep the zipper from coming apart at the bottom as well? IT seems much loner than the boot in the video, but then at the end, its all nicely trimmed. Anyhow, thanks for the great video!
+Eric Scheck what i would do (i do sew already) is stitch across the zipper side to side along the bottom edge of the fabric. or even up a little (since you won't be unzipping the boot all the way to the heel bottom). sew back and forth (set your machine to satin stitch so it doesn't try to advance, with widest width possible) until it looks secure. Cut the zipper below the stitching. if you use matching thread it won't show.
For those of us with a wide calf. Could we add a wedge shape on each side of the zipper and then sew that on? That way the calf of the boot is wider? Thoughts?
Wow! The pattern is perfect, and these are so easy to make. I just finished a pair of boots for a school play and they look amazing. Thank you for sharing this.
Question on the zipper. What happens to the excess section of the zipper. In this video you have some of the zipper passed the faux leather. What do you do with that?
I want to make cosplay shoes that are pretty shiny, like those black rubber dress shoes - what material would I use for making them? Or should I use the vinyl then paint and/or lacquer over?
I did it!!! I used your template for an obi wan kenobi cosplay and i just added some inches to the length and it fitted perfect! thank you for this awesome video and for sharing the template
Thanks bro it helps me a lot!, I'm sick of finding boots at shops or online that will look exactly like what i'm finding, lucky I've found your channel.
Do you have a ratio of about what percentage it is to adjust per size up or down by chance? I’m having hard time figuring out the sizing for my kids. I need to do a size 5-6 teen and a size 13 youth size. Idk what I’m doing wrong. But your video is awesome and I think I can actually do this. Lol
your boot tutorial gives me idea for my tasm spiderman boots because i bought some asics dirt dog 4's and inak converting them to look like knock off versions of 3's
this is an awesome tutorial and I love that you give free templates. I will be using this for a star lord costume. nice to see a fellow Christian costumer
Sorry to ask 7 years late but i cant figure out the right size scale for a shoe size 4.5 and was wondering if someone could help me get the right size ?
Very well done tutorial! Definitely in the same ballpark I'm in. My only question would be for a female hero's boot? like Jean Grey's, or even batgirl's...
The same pattern will work for women's boots. You may need to make it a little smaller and, if you're using high heels, then you need to angle the foot a little downward.
What I do is simply cut the M shape out of another piece of vinyl, then stitch it onto the boots, creating a double layer. There's no need to hem the top if you do it this way.
Hey Scott, regarding sizing, making a hero suit for my son, he is a size 5 shoe also. Can u tell me how you down sized the pattern for your son's boots in the video?
Awesome. I will try that. By any chance what kind of glue would you recommend to glue foam sheet cut outs for more design look. (blk book w/ metallic red trim.)
If you're using marine vinyl for the boot, I would use super glue or to attach the foam. Make sure you scratch up the vinyl surface a little first using some sand paper.
Thank you so much! I'm sewing my own cosplays for an upcoming Con and this video has helped me tremendously. Not just with boots but my sewing in general. Again, thank you!
@@paulaneary7877 I mostly do searches for comic cons near my location and go from there. I pick and choose those that I know I can prepare for both financially and cosplay wise. I hope this helps!
Thanks to you I was able to make some amazing boots for my cosplay of Saitama, from One Punch Man. Althought I used a fabric more thin than yours, the boots worked pretty well despite not being so firm when not worn. Again, thanks for the video!!
Hey, I'm needing to make thigh high boots for a wonder woman cosplay I am doing and I was wondering if you would just extend the height of the pattern or is it more complex then that for it to stay flexible and moveable?
Very useful, as I've not been able to find a theatrically accurate version of Captain America's boots from the Avengers movie (2012) anywhere! Great info! Thanks!
I used a 14 inch zipper, but I'd use a 16 or even 18 inch and then cut out the pattern with an extra 2 inches. The best way to modify a pattern is to cut the pattern near the calf area (wider part) and lay it down with an inch gap, then add an inch to the top part.
Thanks for showing me this! I needed to know how to make kiss boots. I'm a big fan of kiss! My only question is: how do I install a zipper on the side?
I just cut it off with scissors. Once you glue it to the back of the shoe, the glue will prevent the zipper pull from sliding off and the end from fraying.
+ddoublevee You can use sneakers if you like. I prefer the dress shoes because they are smooth all over and the sole has a little lip to it. But you can use pretty much any shoe you want.
+mike berry That would be more difficult. You'd have to remove the seam allowance from this pattern then add them in where the new zipper was going to be. It'd be easier to find a pattern that's got the zipper in the right place.
HeyWhoStoleMyCookie Yes, absolutely. I've used faux suede, and lighter weight pleather. But my favorite is marine vinyl because it's sturdy and durable.
So cool to see his kids in the background doing homework. It's good to see you doing your thing and allowing your kids to witness instead of sending them off to their room or something.

If anyone is interested in the pattern for the Robin boots, let me know. It's just a simple modification to the regular boot template.

You saved the day. I thought I was stuck with a thin 4 way stretch to accomplish this. The marine vinyl will be much more convincing!

One of the best tutorials I have ever watched. Trust me, I have watched quite a few.
The best, and cheapest cosplay boots I have ever seen.
This is amazing! Why hasn't this got more views? :o
You're videos are great! Can we get one on making gauntlet/gloves?
If you want fewer visible seams on your boots you can use contact cement to tack down the seam allowance instead of stitching it down.

any recommendations on shoe sizing for girls? im not sure what a men's size is equivalent to in women's size
Thank god I found your channel! This helps so much for my power ranger boots. Might I ask for a tutorial on pleather gloves?
Yes, actually. I plan on adding a glove/gauntlet tutorial soon.
+Scott Bayles Sweet.
Hiya, can this method of boot making be used for women's shoes? I'm doing a Cosplay where I have to have knee high boots and I have HUGE feet.
The same pattern will work for women's boots. But if you're using high heels, then you need to angle the foot a little downward.
I think this is well worth watching. Its needed every year
So, I believe if you're trying to scale the pattern size down, take your boot/shoe size and multiply by ten. If at scale 100 it'll fit a size 10, so if I scale it down to 80, it should fit a size 8. (at least, I think that's how it'll work)

This is really awesome - will be using this for a Homelander cosplay for Comic Con in London this year - cheers!
What a cool and thorough tutorial. Love your videos.
I only have an old singer machine from the 50s that can only do a straight stitch. Can I see zippers with that or I need another machine?
Hi Scott. Great video! I was curious about the excess zipper left over at the back and bottom of the boot. How did you trim that and keep it together? In your expert opinion do you think contact cement would work for the glue? Thanks!
For those of us with a wide calf. Could we add a wedge shape on each side of the zipper and then sew that on? That way the calf of the boot is wider? Thoughts?
Think this would work for The Great Saiyaman DBZ costume? working on the version with Gohan as the super hero and he has white boots with gold on em
thanks alot for this. this saved lot of money from buying pair of boots for my next cosplay
Wow! The pattern is perfect, and these are so easy to make. I just finished a pair of boots for a school play and they look amazing. Thank you for sharing this.
you never explained what to do with the bottom excess zipper. do you sew over it and cut the excess?
If I were to make Affleck Batman Boots. How would I make the line across the boot?
How would you go about making boots for a girl that's more of a skin tight look ?? I would love to see how you approach that.
Question on the zipper. What happens to the excess section of the zipper. In this video you have some of the zipper passed the faux leather. What do you do with that?
very fun; concise. How would you modify this ot line with fleece? or use fur on the outside?
What about 1966 batman boots?
Can you use a regular shoe?
What happens to the bottom end of the zipper, it looked like it was hanging past the bottom of the boot top?
I wish I had the skills and dedication to make stuff like this. Looks great.
I want to make cosplay shoes that are pretty shiny, like those black rubber dress shoes - what material would I use for making them? Or should I use the vinyl then paint and/or lacquer over?

So did you trim the excess zipper at the bottom of the zipper? I didn't see or hear if you had said that already. Thanks!
Thanks bro it helps me a lot!, I'm sick of finding boots at shops or online that will look exactly like what i'm finding, lucky I've found your channel.
Hello. Can the original shoe be use over and over again?
That was amazing! So detailed and so easy to put together! Made them in less than a day and they were ready to go the next!

How do you get the soles red for making Superman boots? I've never seen that style of shoe in pure red.
I spray paint the soles with Plasti-Dip.
Thank you :-)
When I clicked on this video, I did not expect to hear Skillet music. Love their songs :)
Could you tell the scale in for the size 6 ??of the boot pattern
Sorry to ask 7 years late but i cant figure out the right size scale for a shoe size 4.5 and was wondering if someone could help me get the right size ?
I have misplaced the power cord and foot pedal for the sewing machine. Can I use the E6000 to glue it together?
Really easy looking - will be definitely giving this a go for my girls boots......thanks for the tutorial.....
Where do you put the excess zipper on the bottom of the boot
Very well done tutorial! Definitely in the same ballpark I'm in. My only question would be for a female hero's boot? like Jean Grey's, or even batgirl's...
The same pattern will work for women's boots. You may need to make it a little smaller and, if you're using high heels, then you need to angle the foot a little downward.
Finally, I'm able to make some boots for Scott Summers!
One last thing, regarding Superman boots, any tips for the v at the top of the boot?
What I do is simply cut the M shape out of another piece of vinyl, then stitch it onto the boots, creating a double layer. There's no need to hem the top if you do it this way.
Hey Scott, regarding sizing, making a hero suit for my son, he is a size 5 shoe also. Can u tell me how you down sized the pattern for your son's boots in the video?
This is just an estimate, but I would say print it at 75%, then see how the paper pattern looks compared to the shoe before cutting the fabric.

Have you done a boot with a pointed toe, like the Iron Sheik of WWF fame
I have. You can use the same pattern, you just need to extend the toe a little bit.
How do you thim the zippers at the bottom?
That was awesome. I've wanted a pair of Wonder Woman boots since I was 10.
i am interested in the robin boots patterns
Thanks to you I was able to make some amazing boots for my cosplay of Saitama, from One Punch Man. Althought I used a fabric more thin than yours, the boots worked pretty well despite not being so firm when not worn. Again, thanks for the video!!
Hey, I'm needing to make thigh high boots for a wonder woman cosplay I am doing and I was wondering if you would just extend the height of the pattern or is it more complex then that for it to stay flexible and moveable?
Yes, you can just extend the pattern up the leg.
+Scott Bayles (Creative Costuming) awesome, thanks for the quick reply :)
Would love to know the batman boots and suit
Very useful, as I've not been able to find a theatrically accurate version of Captain America's boots from the Avengers movie (2012) anywhere! Great info! Thanks!
Where in the internet Can i buy shoes like This???
Scott did you ever Know or Meet Lenny Robinson, The REAL BATMAN, he Dressed like Keaton, but his Bat Mobile was West's.
can you do a knee high boot cover?
Add elastic depending on the material if its not pleather
I would just extend the pattern and zipper length. Maybe lower the back behind the knee for flexibility. 😉
I used a 14 inch zipper, but I'd use a 16 or even 18 inch and then cut out the pattern with an extra 2 inches. The best way to modify a pattern is to cut the pattern near the calf area (wider part) and lay it down with an inch gap, then add an inch to the top part.

Awesome. Thank you for taking the time to share this process and finished product. You are a gift! Many blessings.
Hi, can you make a tutorial of how to make gloves. -Thank you.
+MissMystica I'd love to! I'll add it to my list.
How do you solve the problem of the excess length of the zipper at the bottom?
I just cut it off with scissors. Once you glue it to the back of the shoe, the glue will prevent the zipper pull from sliding off and the end from fraying.
Ok man thanks. I'm a rookie in the cosplay arena. I'm taking a year to build my body and build a batman costume.
Bro I need to protect car wash worker leg with waterproof any idea
Why was I not doing this before. This is great
Hi, May I ask, do I need to use that kind of shoe? can I use a different alternate like sneakers? Thanks!
+ddoublevee You can use sneakers if you like. I prefer the dress shoes because they are smooth all over and the sole has a little lip to it. But you can use pretty much any shoe you want.
Scott Bayles Great, Thanks so much!
I think you would want to use sand paper to rough it up.
What if you want to make a boot which dosen't have a seem up the middle ?
+mike berry That would be more difficult. You'd have to remove the seam allowance from this pattern then add them in where the new zipper was going to be. It'd be easier to find a pattern that's got the zipper in the right place.
Okay I'm back again, could you use any other material, such as faux leather, the type you use on upholstery?
HeyWhoStoleMyCookie Yes, absolutely. I've used faux suede, and lighter weight pleather. But my favorite is marine vinyl because it's sturdy and durable.
I've been searching for hours for a tutorial like this ...
Thank you , you really helped me a lot! :D
Excellent tutorial. Impressed with your level of finish too!!
How to cut the zipper in the end ?
Great Idea Mr. Scott Bayles and also I was also thinking about making Power Ranger boots so I don't have to spend money on stormtrooper boots.
Christian cosplayers! MY FAMILY!!
what do you do with the access zipper at the bottom of the boot?
+Cameron Anderson You can just trim it off with a pair of scissors. The glue should stop the zipper from going passed the bottom.
hi love your videos, im wandering to increase the size , by how much percent per extra half size or size, eg: 11 - 11.5 or 11 - 12
It depends on the shoe, but I would say about 5% per size.
thanks i'll up date you on my progress :)
I made these and used Silicone spray. It didn't leave the vinyl greasy and moved smoothly.
Have you got the pattern for those robin shoes?
is the size 10-11 from the Uk US or america?
i have to make Todoroki boots EU size 37.5 .-.
this is very helpful, what size of needle and thread did u use? thnx!
I use a standard needle and dual duty xp thread.
oh i see, thank you! very helpful :)
Superb instructions. Thank you so much for the step by step visuals.
