  • Leather Moccasins, made to fit, are the MOST comfortable casual footwear on planet Earth. Follow my journey into the satisfying world of Leatherwork.
    Making leather moccasins has become a passion.
    Leatherwork began as a new hobby for me a little over 3 years ago, mainly making gifts for family and friends. After a few bags, purses, belts and holsters, I developed a strong desire to make my own leather moccasins.
    My inspiration came from a pair of leather Moc's I had ordered from the talented group of artisans from "Catskill Mountain Moccasins" about 10 years ago.
    They fit me like a glove and quickly became my favorite pair of footwear.
    However the style is more suited to a renaissance festival type of atmosphere than your everyday casual shoes. I found that I didn't often find an occasion to wear them in my daily life.
    Once my leatherworking skills grew to "competent" level, I decided to try making
    my own "Chuka" style moc's that would be suitable for my lifestyle.
    Yeah these aren't what one would wear to the office, but I work from home when I am not in my
    workshop, so long story short, with much trial and error, I have worked out a method that gives me
    great fitting and comfortable moccasins.
    At the time of uploading this video, I have successfully made 6 pairs for myself
    and family members so far.
    While this video is not a step-by-step tutorial, I feel that It should give an aspiring leatherworker
    a good idea of the steps, materials and tools needed to make awesome moccasins.
    Please feel free to to offer advice, tips or tricks in the comment section.
    I really appreciate hearing feedback from the RUclips community, and if you have any
    experience making moccasins, please share with myself and the other viewers in the comments.
    In case you noticed, I have not shown the process of making the patterns.
    Pattern making would surely need a video all of it's own, as it is perhaps the most
    challenging part of any leatherworking project.
    If enough viewers express interest, I might consider a pattern making video
    so there you go, convince me guys :)
    leatherwork is for me a relaxing and rewarding experience
    The chance to be creative, work with my hands, and best of all have quality handmade
    and practical Leather goods.
    I hope you enjoy this video, and if you find value it it, please "hit that like button" and share

    Sole material

    he has many sole options available- I use the Mill Luna Crepe, 4mm, color- Tobacco
    There are many options for leather, I recommend 5 to 6oz thickness,
    I normally use chrome tan, as Veg tan leather is usually stiffer and quite firm.
    However, the veg-tan Bison hide I have been using is a perfect choice as it is
    soft and supple, yet also very strong and tough, here is a link

    I have tried many types of thread, but my favorite is Ritza Tiger thread, .8mm or 1.0mm

    I use barge cement almost exclusively for my leather, I find it to be the strongest glue.
    here is a link to the "regular" Barge, a bit stinky, use in a well ventilated area

    Here is a link to the "toluene free" barge, which has less VOC emissions

    Yes, please on the pattern making! I have sewn all my life, but making shoe patterns is not my strong point. I managed a pretty good regular moccasin on my own, but I'd rather not waste leather on something that's not gonna work at all, as I've already done that.😅 You should draft the different sizes and make them available to buy! I like this style a lot, and have the leather and sole materials to make but was hoping for a pattern so I could make mine as well as some for gifts for my brothers, sons, and nephews. Good video nevertheless, easy to follow.

    • @BuildswithBrian

      Elaine, sounds like you’re quite the accomplished leather worker 👍
      I am hoping to release a patternmaking series of videos this fall, as that’s the time I tend to have most available for longform videos
      The thing about my pattern making process is that it’s specific to each individual, I think I’m gonna need a little bit more experience and testing before I can release size specific patterns for sale .
      But hopefully this fall I can explain the process I go through to make a pattern for an individual’s foot
      Thank you for your comment and for watching and good luck to you and your leatherworking endeavors

    I could skip on the rubber bottom part tho right if ide rather without...im aware theyll wear on bottoms much faster but im needing these for more the purpose to not have a rubber sole. Just have a bunch of older leather scraps that had been my father inlaws and they have just sat in a box for dang 30yrs. I finally found out i could have used it all along and wasnt something special being saved...he acually was very happy when i asked if i could use it to make some moccasins for us n our kid. He even has all the leather working tools and leather string in there with it. This ol box hasnt been touched in 30 yrs and i feel really blessed to get to make something of this leather at last. And thank you for thos video showing the steps one by one very easy to follow sorta hypnotizing but peaceful w the music you got on here.

    • @BuildswithBrian
      @BuildswithBrian  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry for the late reply, but yes, absolutely you can make them without a rubber sole, I actually just finished two pairs without rubber. I did however add a separate layer of veg, tan leather on the bottom, which I would recommend, but it is not necessary if you want a really soft foot feel.
      I’m excited for you with your newfound leather. Hope you make something great for your family.

    Really, really, really well made. The Mocs and the video are well done, man. I made a pair of Mocs for myself using a store-bought kit. I have wide feet so I modified the standard pattern quite a bit and bought some extra bits 'n' bobs to finish them. I like your chukka style much better than the loafer/slipper style. And the rubber sole makes the whole difference. Do you notice any discomfort due to the entirely flat sole/lack of arch support? I guess you could put a store bought insole in there if you wanted?
    If and when you get plans ready for sale, I will be entirely on board. This video got me in the mood to make some for my kiddoes. And definitely another pair for me. I don't have the industrial machine, but I'm willing to hand stitch everything for a pair of shoes like that.
    Once again, great work.

      @BuildswithBrian  Год назад

      Thank you for the kind words, I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the process.
      I also really enjoy the chukka style as well.
      And the this sole is great, adds some protection to the feet and the moccasins.
      As far as discomfort, not having an arch or heel, I personally have no trouble with it at all.
      They can take some getting used to if you’ve never worn, barefoot or minimalist style footwear before, you may want to wear them a bit at a time until your feet get used to it
      However, I come from the belief that these types of moccasins are better for your foot health, for example, since they are custom made to your feet, you have a wider properly fitting toebox which is great compares to factory made shoes that cramp up your toes and can lead to bunions or other problems.
      But please do your own research, and consult your foot doctor as I am not a doctor.

      Do you mean the split cut at the center top ??

    • @maureenjoy1513
      @maureenjoy1513 Год назад

      Yes, the split at the top of the heel. I am going to fiddle a little with a pattern I have and try it out on scrap to make sure it fits correctly.
      Watching your video without narration, except for your on screen notes, had me paying close attention to everything you did and one of the best videos I have watched. I learn best this way, and is my opinion only. I am not speaking for others who may learn differently, and do not mean to offend in any way. I will rewatch again as I work at altering my own pattern. Thank you again.

    • @BuildswithBrian
      @BuildswithBrian  Год назад

      Maureen, I tried the split after making a few pairs to try and get the heel piece to fit closer to the wearers real heel which was to make the moccasin feel more “tailored “ to the foot and hopefully less rubbing while walking.
      I think it is working great.
      It kind of cups the heel a bit
      Good luck with your endeavors 👍

    I would love to see a tutorial and really feel stuck with how to get started with the patterns and measuring the feet. I really like this style and haven’t found much out there to help me get started.
    I’ll be subscribing and on the lookout if you have more videos of this craft:)

      Carleigh, you’re welcome… I felt the same way about finding pattern making information, very little out there on RUclips 😔
      I finally just dove in and bought a cheap generic pattern off Etsy and made them, they worked ok but the real frustration was teaching myself how to alter and adapt them to whatever size I needed…. After many attempts and failures It clicked and I developed my own process.
      I am by no means a moccasins expert, but I am happy with my progress.
      If I do make a pattern series of videos it will be a while as tutorials are a LOT of work, but there will be other leathercraft videos real soon.
      Thanks for watching!
