Ellie-Jean's style root theory is so refreshing, and inspiring, and just all-round amazing, because she's not looking at women's fashion from the outside in like Kibbe and Fruit-type systems, she's honouring the individual from an inside perspective; not a designer saying "I think you'd look good in this", but an individual dressing for themselves saying "I feel good in this, I choose this for myself!" and that is unbelievably liberating and gorgeous ❤ I know I'm basically just restating what Ellie-Jean herself says, but I'm just so blown away by what she's brought to this kind of fashion theory. I hope your inspired thinking is remembered the same way Kibbe's is Ellie, I really do. What an amazing way of looking at personal style ✨❤😊

For example stone, moon and fire sounds pretty hard to combine in my opinion. Combining only moon and fire sounds easy but how do you bring the stone root in there? Maybe an all-black outfit, leather leggings, a sweater and some chunky boots or platform heels?

I'm having trouble finding my style roots, since "modest vs. sensual" and "on top of things vs. carefree" are things I either don't consider, or which I'd rather be switches from day to day, but I know moon is up there (dark and experimental), and I'm looking forward to the next video!
Edit: I finally settled on carefree over on top of things, because I'd generally rather look sloppy than stuffy, I really like distressed fabric and obvious mending, and I like a little chaos in my outfits, although modest vs. sensual is still a tossup. This makes my top 3 style roots moon, earth, and sun, which seems like an odd combination, but I've described my ideal aesthetic as "Nevergoth" or "Neverland undead," so it sounds about right for me

    PART 1:
    Sensual
    Dark
    Carefree
    Delicate
    Experimental
    1. Carefree
    2. Experimental
    3. Sensual
So as of Part 1, I think I may be Earth/Sun. I already know I am a Romantic body type with Gamine essence. I found the “Dark Fairy” video super useful!
    •••
    PART 2:
Sun: Creative, wild and bold. Quirky. I LOVE this. Really speaks to my Gamine essence!
Mountain: I hadn’t considered Mountain before, but the blazers and suspenders are somethings I’ve always been drawn to. They contrast well with my Romantic shape to again, enhance my Gamine essence.
Earth: I love pressed flowers, patchwork, old books and the Dark Academia aesthetic.
Something I’ve been looking into lately has been Fairy Academia, which I feel ties all these things together really well. It’s like a coquettish, ruffle-scruff ragamuffin inventor or artist living in an Edwardian forest. Very specific, but it AT LAST pins down the vibe I get from Helena Bonham Carter’s style and it explains why I’ve loved her style since I was 11 years old! That’s 9 years now haha. This has been a 9-year battle of of trying to find myself and now I’ve got it! And because of my Romantic undertone I don’t feel I have to sacrifice sensuality or femininity in order to be a quirky little weirdo haha!! Oh I wish I could hug you for helping me sort my life out lol. This is a fantastic theory, well done! I really hope you continue to publicise it so others may have a similar experience to me!
For anyone with similar tastes, textiles I’ve been considering are:
    Dainty Florals
    Brown Leather
    Suede
    Velvet (in small doses)
    Lace
    Layered Tulle
Lots of chains (jewellery & belts)
Chunky boots (Dr Martens of course!)
    Corduroy
Darker/muted natural colours (greens, pinks, purples, beiges, greys etc.)
Hope my comment helps someone! Thanks again Ellie-Jean!!

What I find so fascinating about this system, is that I always thought I wanted to dress modestly, but through your educational content and quiz I realize that when I don't connect with my style roots and essence, and when I don't embrace my lines, I want to disappear/not be seen. That is not the same as having an authentic modest style root.

  • @chlomackin
    @chlomackin Год назад +9

If you’re struggling to identify your style roots, something that helped me was going through Ellie-Jean’s Pinterest board for each root and saving the pins that resonated with me to my own style root boards. That helped me rule out which roots I definitely don’t like and also identify which specific element of each root it is that I am drawn to.
For example, I knew that Sun was probably one of my roots but as Ellie-Jean says that could be anything from collars to peplums to prints. After doing the above I realised that the Sun root for me means bright pops of colour rather than quirky details.
    Hope this is useful!

This really nailed it for me. My top three are Mountain, Stone and Earth, and I can absolutely see these reflected in my style over the last twenty years. Understanding my body type and season is really helping me bring in the Earth qualities in ways that are more flattering than when I was younger without pushing me completely into Mountain or Stone, which I’ve felt as I am getting older. Brilliant!

This is genius!! Growing up I’ve always been drawn to spookier things like ghosts, Halloween, murder mysteries, wolves, the colors black and white together. I’m an artist as well, and I work with graphite, so that of course is a little more ominous looking because I tend to go for a lot of contrast in my work.
But I also love nature, and animals, flowers, coziness, simpleness, modesty, neutral colors. So I’ve confirmed my style roots are mushroom, flower, and moon 😆 Makes perfect sense because I’ve concluded my personal style awhile ago (although I can’t figure out my kibbe…🤔 ), but wanted a name for it, so this quiz was perfect!
My style is very much simple, muted, and neutral colors, and I like to look put together. The kicker is figuring out how to add my moon root lol! I do that by wearing ear cuffs, a toe ring, multiple rings, my naturally voluminous, wild hair, and eyeliner 😆 That way I still look put together the way I like, but my moon root shows the side of me that doesn’t take life too seriously

We are very similar. Twins basically. However, I don't know if flower would suit me. I like nature/cutesy things, and I do incorporate a lot of florals in my clothing. But in contrast, I tend to style the floral/cutesy things with dramatic goth accents, sometimes a bit of dark academia, or structured, sophisticated and classic styles. Very rarely do I wear something 100% cutesy. So, I don't know. I agree with you though, her root style system is very good.

Ah yes this articulates my problem perfectly!! My 3 are Flower, Moon and Earth. I'm fairly good at combining Flower and earth but putting Flower and Moon together always ends up looking tacky/childish, bit like a cheap version of tik tok e-girls. I love some good pastels and childish elements, but I think I'm getting too old to be comfortable in this. I'd like to shift towards a more polished and grown up look without having to leave behind my love for doll-like pastel crop tops and frills and colourful accessories, or black lace goth-y dresses.

My mind is blown away, I love fashion and all styles honestly and I've changed my wardrobe a million times but since I'm a very short person it has always been difficult and even more now than I gained so much weight so I have lost a bit of motivation to dress as I want but your videos really helped me and inspire me, you're amazing!!

I really like this concept because it's inspirational. It's based on an individual's personal taste and aspirations. Rather than body shapes. I see potential rather than limitations.
I'm a soft natural and tend to pick practical outfits over all and tend to be effortless but bland. While I've been creating Pinterest boards with my dream clothes that are flamboyant, colorful, playful, daring and glamorous. Turns out the test tells me my style root is sun, fire and mushroom. It's about right! Thanks for this!

Thanks Ellie-Jean for this system. It has really helped me understand my own style with a greater clarity. I’m a flower, mushroom and sun in that order (soft gamine in kibbe). It’s amazing when you understand why you prefer certain styles over others and more amazing still when you instinctively understand when they’re in balance in an outfit. Certain days and occasions call for more or less of these individual styles and that’s cool too. Thank you again. 🌸🍄🌞🙏🥰♥️

I am now watching your style roots video, and I love your thought process! I am 58 years old and I love fashion and sometimes I love a look on somebody else but when I put it on myself it just doesn’t work… Trying to hone in but I think I’m a mountain and a mushroom! Can’t wait to watch all of this!

I love this! I've been on a journey recently to wear what feels right to me but couldn't quite figure out why they did. You hear the 'dress to express' but I could never figure out what I was personally wanting to convey. The 'this or that' quiz and the words/images you have associated with each style root allowed me to have a gut reaction to see if I resonated with them. I've concluded that I'm a mushroom with fire and stone spectrum and it feels so right. I want to be sensual (silk, more skin), timeless (neutrals, minimal), but still relaxed (sneakers, lounge fits) . I could easily see how the keywords were apparent in my current favorite pieces. Also how, depending on my mood, I might lean heavier into one style root than others (stone on my cozy days, fire on my dressier). I also think my Autumn coloring, dramatic classic figure, and natural essence face blend well with this. Thank you so much, I am so grateful!!

I’ve just saw your shorts about this topic, so I searched for your Pinterest boards. The Mushroom X Earth X Flower reference pictures literally describe what is in my wardrobe and in what I feel the most “me”. It’s very cottagcore and princess-like (and my sister said to one piece of mine that it’s what a fairy would were). Sometimes I would love to have a darker (like moon) aesthetic, even tough I wouldn’t feel comfortable in it💚

I'm Moon + Sun + Earth, and this video explained something to me about why I make the fashion choices I do! My first root is Moon - I love dark, edgy, textured, gothic aesthetics and wear a lot of black. BUT I'm a flamboyant natural. As you mentioned in a previous video, these kind of aesthetics on Flamboyant Naturals can bypass edge and just look chic. I always felt a little left out of goth fashion because of gravitating towards very loud/ clashing colour and unusual patterns. I think adding these Sun elements to my Moon vibes creates the edge I'm looking for. Earth is my 3rd, and while not all the elements apply, things like the draped silhouette, chunky jewllery, 60s vibes and cowboy boots are also things I love! I always say I want to dress like one of those bright little poisonous rainforest frogs 😅 I never thought I had a defined aesthetic, just things that were me or definitely not me. So this system is very pleasing, and I think I understand myself better!

Good for me cuz I've always liked cottagecore and dark academia and funnily I was attracted to flower, earth and mountain the most out of all. Very much my style, with your description of the elements now I can effectively create the outfits I want to put together but couldn't bcz I lacked the basic skeleton of it. Thanks so much for this!! i really like how one root can express itself in entirely different ways, for example earth can be both ‘dark academia’ and ‘boho camp counselor’ - which are two directions i very much vibe with. the quiz from the last video got me stone and moon roots which is very flamboyant natural in my humble FN opinion. my daily outfits tend to have that “im edgy but i have to go to work now” stone-moon thing going on for them while more formal looks have this earth-moon witchy energy. gotta update my personal style pinterest board now! thanks!!

So lovely this system! In the essences I consider my style a mix of Ingenue, Romantic, and Dramatic and it's easily transferable with your system as I immediately gravitated to Fire (Romantic) - Flower (Ingenue) - Sun + Moon (Dramatic). The Sun + Moon combo explains why I like to go bold with light, bright, and sparkly colors, as well as go to what I call "Romantic Goth" with a darker, more sensual/cute-ish aesthetic.
I never been one to subscribe to dressing in one aesthetic as I never felt like one was distincly me! Fashion is another art form, and to limit yourself to one style would be like painting in one color for an extended period of time. Is it possible? Yes. But why do that when there's so many colors to choose from!

Nice way of breaking it down :) I noticed I often like elements of certain pieces but maybe not the color, fabric, or cut. Or appreciating pieces of clothing but knowing it's not for me. This has cleared things up a lot.
According to these roots, I would define myself as
    Moon
    Earth
    Flower
Which totally fits with my mix. I'd say it also changes a bit depending on the seasons. Summer is more flowery f.e. while winter sometimes incorporates more mushroom elements. For me, this means summer is more witchy, goblin core, while winter tends to lean towards dark academia.
