I'm split. It doesn't seem like a wargame/simulation by spreadsheet which Command Modern Operations is but the fact that I input my commands on the small window on the lower left corner is annoying. If there was a way to make that the main screen and put the 3D on a smaller window I would very much appreciate it.
Sea Power is pretty special and when they add missing content it will be even better. It's just so darn fun with great graphics and the scenario editor is pretty good.
Excited to try Armored Brigade II - already enjoyed the first even if it was only 2d in a simulated 3d environment, 3D AB2 is goona rock socks, and awesome that it'll have all the maps etc of the previous title. Excited to see your support of Sea Power and it's one I've had on wishlist for a while - loving seeing that it has 2000+ reviews and is very positive, as I've been waiting AGES for a modern naval sim. Games like Cold Waters certainly existed, sure, but limited in scope and kind of arcadey in presentation. Seems like Sea Power is an honest sim attempt by comparison, and including naval / air operations rules.
The #1 War Game of the year in 2024, and every year since 1988, is F-19 Stealth Fighter. We can't wait for 2nd Lt H. Gamer to fly his way into history, all the way up to Brigadier General Gamer, all the while getting every Air Force medal, ribbon, and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Way to go, General!
HQ:WW2 is definitely tactical. I was really looking forward to that game because it's a spiritual successor to Battle Academy. Unfortunately, the wildly overpowered artillery killed my interest in finishing it. It's got a lot of good things going for it but all it really did is make me wish they just made a true sequel to BA.
Impatient to play wargames involving drones, electronical warfare. Things have changed a lot since the Warsaw pact. You killed me the - grognard - pronunciation. In french it s closer to - groniar - 😂 Just jocking, no offense! Happy New year from France🎉
I think they should further develop games like Fighting steel (navy game) and Steel Panthers (hexagon/turn base) because they had so much potential and with today's graphics and A.I. I really wanted to play them. Played the Harpoon series a lot and find the missile age games too impersonal and boring, will never buy Naval Combat In The Missile Age, but that's my choice and thoughts on that game. The final frontier of fun tactical/strategic war games is the World War II / Korean War era, have a good new year.
I never thought I'd say it, but I am completely and utterly worn out on WWII games now. I did pick up Warno on that list due to positive buzz, but haven't tried it yet.
I didn't touch Warno or Regiments because honestly the 1980's cold war invasion of West Germany stuff feels played out, just more of the same since I own all the Wargame titles.
WARNO is still less feature complete than most of the earlier entries. That is if you can even tolerate the multiplayer optimizations and garbage unit design which reduce the asymmetrical situation in Fulda to a symmetrical numbers game 🤮 Also the maps are shockingly flat. And damage has no effect on terrain Modding warno is pretty easy - just edit some text files. Still a pain in the ass to have to fix their game for them.
I loved Yes, Your Grace. That was a year or two ago though, saw that on the screen and had forgot that game. Fantastic indie game. But I like Steel Division and WARNO but man, I really wish they'd make a game that actually has.... terrain? Not one map has a REAL hill or mountain or valley. All just flat, hilly maps. Armored Brigade 2 looks like a great game but my lord do they need to fix that LOD. For such low poly graphics there shouldn't even be LOD's
Yes Your Grace was special, the sequel Yes Your Grace Snowfall didn’t have the same magic for me when I played the Beta about a year ago, looks like it’s slated for release in Q1 of 2025, so I’m curious if they managed to add to it since the beta and capture the charm of the original.
I was debating doing a DLC specific list, I feel like Gunner Heat PCs updates this year are also noteworthy and while it’s not a wargame per se the CK3 updates.
Classified France is a game about war, not a wargame. The others can't even be bother to include fundamental aspects of warfare like leaders or officers. A very bad year for wargames.
Most modern war games (I think) de-emphasize) officers because the perception of modern war is we’re in an era of push button warriors. The brave officer who leads his men across a field doesn’t turn the tide, he’s turned pink mist by cluster bombs fired from 10 miles away by a technician. A destroyer lead by a great captain won’t break the line if an enemy battle line through the bravery and perseverance of their officers because no matter how brave or inspiring the leader, the computer chips in their radars and missiles are the limiting factors, not the humanity flipping the switches. That’s not to say humans don’t matter obviously but humans have become operators of systems in a way that was not true 200 years ago.
@@thehistoricalgamer I would argue the role of leadership hasn't changed that much, despite the technical development in weapon systems. Sure they are much more sophisticated and destructive than before, but they are not infinite in numbers. It is the battlefield leaders who need to decide and argue to commanders when, where and why to apply their best means of destruction. Other than that, it is the grunts supported by artillery who still do a considerable part of the heavy lifting. Besides, there is no point in spending the most advanced and expensive weapons unless someone is occupying a vital area where they cannot be dislodged from otherwise. What I'm trying to say is some poor bastards need to be at the receiving end (from both sides if peer-to-near-peer), and they sure need good leaders if anybody does.
I was very disappointed with Sea Power. It touts itself as Nato vs Warsaw Pact yet it has very very few non US Nato units in game and I've been told by two devs that they were not happy with the damage model which is kinda important in a game like this. I'm waiting for Harpoon 97 coming out on Steam, I cut my teeth on the original Harpoon back in the 90's which was a great game.
Strategic games about war are wargames as well as tactical games such as these. All are Kinetic warfare and by the classic definition are wargames. This list might be best described "Top 5: Tactical Wargames of 2024" other list might be described as Operational or Strategic Wargames of 2024. So by the classic definition I came to this list expecting wargames of varying scales and in effect watched your list of favorite tactical wargames. Fine, I wasn't expecting a list with a very limited definition. Mind you I've been playing wargames for over 50 years and my definition of what a wargame has changed and expanded over those years.
@@thehistoricalgamer That is true, yet you did indicate you were at least thinking of making a list of "map painters" and seemingly mentioned that they are not wargames.
I was referring specifically to Field of Glory kingdoms. Not the whole list. To me FOG Kingdoms is more kingdom management/strategy than kinetic warfare game.
@@thehistoricalgamer Alas the classic debate what is and what isn't a wargame. There are folks that say diplomatic games are war as war is an extension of diplomacy... Technically that might be true OTOH tossing bombs, shooting guns and moving armies is my idea of a wargame... 😁
its your list but I think you sound like an old guy who cant micro manage multiple tasks at once. Eugens Warno and SD2 excel in multiplayer not the boring AI campaings. This boredom applies to every game you mentioned.
I think Sea Power needs a lot more polish, but when it's done, it'll be fantastic.
I fully agree with your review of Sea Power. Great as is, but will still benefit from further development.

Sea Power : Naval Combat in the Missile Age game looks very cool but for now Armored Brigade II is on my wishlist. Ty for the video 👍
Looking forward to your grand strategy game list next!

A good selection of games from the year. Enjoy your views & videos are always top notch on production as well.

I had a mission for F-117A (essentially the same game) where I had a recon mission, and got 2002 points in one mission! Got me a Silver Star.
@@dennissvitak5475 Impressive!
I've been requesting a HG to do a series on F-19, for a very long time. No response from the General as of yet.

ICBM Escalation is kinda wild-global RTS. Just started, but great first impression
Merry Christmas 🎄 & Happy New year Mr Historical Gamer thanks for your content this year 🔥
What are your thoughts about playing WARNO/Steel Division 2 in Army General mode with Autobattle only ?
Yep. It's my favorite wargame of 2024. And it's not even finished yet!
Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuude, finally a top 5.

What are your thoughts on Second Front as opposed to HQ: WW2?
Second front is a modern ASL while HQ: WW2 is panzer general tactics, if I had to describe the difference in one sentence.
@@thehistoricalgamer
Shhh
We're supposed to pretend Second Front has no relations with SL or ASL
I think 63 days should be on the list. Happy New Year everyone

Armoured Brigade is basically Combat Mission on slightly bigger scale.
with helicopters
And better models air strikes.
Whats the name of the game about creating armored vehicles?
Arms Trade Tycoon Tanks?
